    Rates for the reactions antiproton-proton --> pi phi and gamma phi

    We study antiproton-proton annihilation at rest into πϕ\pi\phi and γϕ\gamma\phi. Rescattering by KK+KK\overline{K^*}K+K^*\overline{K} and ρ+ρ\rho^{+}\rho^{-} for ppπϕ\overline{p}p\rightarrow\pi\phi states is sizable, of order (0.90to2.6)×104(0.90\, {\rm to}\,2.6)\times 10^{-4} in the branching ratio, but smaller than experiment. For ppγϕ\overline{p}p\rightarrow\gamma\phi the rescattering contributions are negligible, but the γϕ\gamma\phi channel is well explained by a ρϕ\rho\phi intermediate state combined with vector meson dominance.Comment: 12 pages, plain latex, 2 postscript figures available upon request, PSI-PR-93-2

    An Inward-Facing Conformation of a Putative Metal-Chelate–Type ABC Transporter

    The crystal structure of a putative metal-chelate–type adenosine triphosphate (ATP)–binding cassette (ABC) transporter encoded by genes HI1470 and HI1471 of Haemophilus influenzae has been solved at 2.4 angstrom resolution. The permeation pathway exhibits an inward-facing conformation, in contrast to the outward-facing state previously observed for the homologous vitamin B12 importer BtuCD. Although the structures of both HI1470/1 and BtuCD have been solved in nucleotide-free states, the pairs of ABC subunits in these two structures differ by a translational shift in the plane of the membrane that coincides with a repositioning of the membrane-spanning subunits. The differences observed between these ABC transporters involve relatively modest rearrangements and may serve as structural models for inward- and outward-facing conformations relevant to the alternating access mechanism of substrate translocation

    Branching Ratio and CP Asymmetry of B_s \to K^*_0(1430)\pi Decays in the PQCD Approach

    In the two-quark model supposition for K0(1430)K_0^{*}(1430), the branching ratios and the direct CP-violating asymmetries for decays Bˉs0K00(1430)π0,K0+(1430)π\bar B_s^0\to K^{*0}_0(1430)\pi^0, K^{*+}_0(1430)\pi^- are studied by employing the perturbative QCD factorization approach. We find that although these two decays are both tree-dominated, the ratio of their penguin to tree contributions are very different: there is only a few percent for the decay Bˉs0K0+(1430)π\bar B_s^0\to K^{*+}_0(1430)\pi^-, while about 37% in scenario I, even 51% in scenario II for the decay Bˉs0K00(1430)π0\bar B_s^0\to K^{*0}_0(1430)\pi^0. It results that these two decays have very different values in the branching ratios and the direct CP asymmetries. The branching ratio of the decay Bˉs0K0+(1430)π\bar B_s^0\to K^{*+}_0(1430)\pi^- is at the order of 10510^{-5}, and its direct CP asymmetry is about (20-30)%. While for the decay Bˉs0K00(1430)π0\bar B_s^0\to K^{*0}_0(1430)\pi^0, its direct CP-violating asymmetry is very large and about 90%, but it is difficult to measure it, because the branching ratio for this channel is small and only 10710^{-7} order.Comment: 8pages, 2figure

    Systematic Theoretical Search for Dibaryons in a Relativistic Model

    A relativistic quark potential model is used to do a systematic search for quasi-stable dibaryon states in the uu, dd, and ss three flavor world. Flavor symmetry breaking and channel coupling effects are included and an adiabatic method and fractional parentage expansion technique are used in the calculations.     A Dispersive Analysis on the f0(600)f_0(600) and f0(980)f_0(980) Resonances in γγπ+π,π0π0\gamma\gamma\to\pi^+\pi^-, \pi^0\pi^0 Processes

    We estimate the di-photon coupling of f0(600)f_0(600), f0(980)f_0(980) and f2(1270)f_2(1270) resonances in a coupled channel dispersive approach. The f0(600)f_0(600) di-photon coupling is also reinvestigated using a single channel TT matrix for ππ\pi\pi scattering with better analyticity property, and it is found to be significantly smaller than that of a qˉq\bar qq state. Especially we also estimate the di-photon coupling of the third sheet pole located near KˉK\bar KK threshold, denoted as f0III(980)f_0^{III}(980). It is argued that this third sheet pole may be originated from a coupled channel Breit-Wigner description of the f0(980)f_0(980) resonance.Comment: 24 pages and 13 eps figures.     Spin wave analysis to the spatially-anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet on triangular lattice

    We study the phase diagram at T=0 of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with spatially-anisotropic interactions. For values of the anisotropy very close to J_alpha/J_beta=0.50, conventional spin wave theory predicts that quantum fluctuations melt the classical structures, for S=1/2. For the regime J_beta<J_alpha, it is shown that the incommensurate spiral phases survive until J_beta/J_alpha=0.27, leaving a wide region where the ground state is disordered. The existence of such nonmagnetic states suggests the possibility of spin liquid behavior for intermediate values of the anisotropy.Comment: Revised version, 4 pages, Latex (twocolumn), 4 figures as eps files.     Evidence for two-quark content of f0(980)f_{0}(980) in exclusive bcb\to c decays

    Inspired by a large decay branching ratio (BR) of B+f0(980)K+B^{+}\to f_{0}(980)K^{+} measured by Belle recently, we propose that a significant evidence of the component of nnˉ=(uuˉ+ddˉ)/2n\bar{n}=(u\bar{u}+d\bar{d})/\sqrt{2} in f0(980)f_{0}(980) could be demonstrated in exclusive bcb\to c decays by the observation of f0(980)f_{0}(980) in the final states BˉD0()π+π(KK)\bar{B}\to D^{0(*)} \pi^{+} \pi^{-}(KK) and BˉJ/Ψπ+π(KK)\bar{B}\to J/\Psi \pi^{+} \pi^{-}(KK). We predict the BRs of BˉD0()(J/Ψ)f0(980)\bar{B}\to D^{0(*)} (J/\Psi) f_{0}(980) to be O(104){\cal {O}}(10^{-4}) (O(105){\cal {O}}(10^{-5})) while the unknown wave functions of D()0D^{(*)0} (J/ΨJ/\Psi) are chosen to fit the observed decays of BˉD()0π0(J/ΨK0())\bar{B}\to D^{(*)0} \pi^{0} (J/\Psi K^{0(*)}).Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Revtex4, version to appear in PR

    Absolute properties of the binary system BB Pegasi

    We present a ground based photometry of the low-temperature contact binary BB Peg. We collected all times of mid-eclipses available in literature and combined them with those obtained in this study. Analyses of the data indicate a period increase of 3.0(1) x 10^{-8} days/yr. This period increase of BB Peg can be interpreted in terms of the mass transfer 2.4 x 10^{-8} Ms yr^{-1} from the less massive to the more massive component. The physical parameters have been determined as Mc = 1.42 Ms, Mh = 0.53 Ms, Rc = 1.29 Rs, Rh = 0.83 Rs, Lc = 1.86 Ls, and Lh = 0.94 Ls through simultaneous solution of light and of the radial velocity curves. The orbital parameters of the third body, that orbits the contact system in an eccentric orbit, were obtained from the period variation analysis. The system is compared to the similar binaries in the Hertzsprung-Russell and Mass-Radius diagram.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, accepted for Astronomical Journa

    When Art Moves the Eyes: A Behavioral and Eye-Tracking Study

    The aim of this study was to investigate, using eye-tracking technique, the influence of bottom-up and top-down processes on visual behavior while subjects, na \u308\u131ve to art criticism, were presented with representational paintings. Forty-two subjects viewed color and black and white paintings (Color) categorized as dynamic or static (Dynamism) (bottom-up processes). Half of the images represented natural environments and half human subjects (Content); all stimuli were displayed under aesthetic and movement judgment conditions (Task) (top-down processes). Results on gazing behavior showed that content-related top-down processes prevailed over low-level visually-driven bottom-up processes when a human subject is represented in the painting. On the contrary, bottom-up processes, mediated by low-level visual features, particularly affected gazing behavior when looking at nature-content images. We discuss our results proposing a reconsideration of the definition of content-related top-down processes in accordance with the concept of embodied simulation in art perception
