Daily variability of Ceres' Albedo detected by means of radial velocities changes of the reflected sunlight
Bright features have been recently discovered by Dawn on Ceres, which extend
previous photometric and Space Telescope observations. These features should
produce distortions of the line profiles of the reflected solar spectrum and
therefore an apparent radial velocity variation modulated by the rotation of
the dwarf planet. Here we report on two sequences of observations of Ceres
performed in the nights of 31 July, 26-27 August 2015 by means of the
high-precision HARPS spectrograph at the 3.6-m La Silla ESO telescope. The
observations revealed a quite complex behaviour which likely combines a radial
velocity modulation due to the rotation with an amplitude of approx +/- 6 m/s
and an unexpected diurnal effect. The latter changes imply changes in the
albedo of Occator's bright features due to the blaze produced by the exposure
to solar radiation. The short-term variability of Ceres' albedo is on
timescales ranging from hours to months and can both be confirmed and followed

Comparative genomic hybridization on microarray (a-CGH) in constitutional and acquired mosaicism may detect as low as 8% abnormal cells
Abstract. Background: The results of cytogenetic investigations on unbalanced chromosome anomalies, both constitutional and acquired, were largely improved by comparative genomic hybridization on microarray (a-CGH), but in mosaicism the ability of a-CGH to reliably detect imbalances is not yet well established. This problem of sensitivity is even more relevant in acquired mosaicism in neoplastic diseases, where cells carrying acquired imbalances coexist with normal cells, in particular when the proportion of abnormal cells may be low. We constructed a synthetic mosaicism by mixing the DNA of three patients carrying altogether seven chromosome imbalances with normal sex-matched DNA. Dilutions were prepared mimicking 5%, 6%, 7%, 8%, 10% and 15% levels of mosaicism. Oligomer-based a-CGH (244 K whole-genome system) was applied on the patients' DNA and customized slides designed around the regions of imbalance were used for the synthetic mosaics. Results and conclusions. The a-CGH on the synthetic mosaics proved to be able to detect as low as 8% abnormal cells in the tissue examined. Although in our experiment some regions of imbalances escaped to be revealed at this level, and were detected only at 10-15% level, it should be remarked that these ones were the smallest analyzed, and that the imbalances recurrent as clonal anomalies in cancer and leukaemia are similar in size to those revealed at 8% level
The HARPS search for southern extrasolar planets: XXXIII. New multi-planet systems in the HARPS volume limited sample: a super-Earth and a Neptune in the habitable zone
The vast diversity of planetary systems detected to date is defying our
capability of understanding their formation and evolution. Well-defined
volume-limited surveys are the best tool at our disposal to tackle the problem,
via the acquisition of robust statistics of the orbital elements. We are using
the HARPS spectrograph to conduct our survey of ~850 nearby solar-type stars,
and in the course of the past nine years we have monitored the radial velocity
of HD103774, HD109271, and BD-061339. In this work we present the detection of
five planets orbiting these stars, with m*sin(i) between 0.6 and 7 Neptune
masses, four of which are in two multiple systems, comprising one super-Earth
and one planet within the habitable zone of a late-type dwarf. Although for
strategic reasons we chose efficiency over precision in this survey, we have
the capability to detect planets down to the Neptune and super-Earth mass
range, as well as multiple systems, provided that enough data points are made

Different loss of material in recurrent chromosome 20 interstitial deletions in Shwachman-Diamond syndrome and in myeloid neoplasms
Abstract
BACKGROUND:
An interstitial deletion of the long arms of chromosome 20, del(20)(q), is frequent in the bone marrow (BM) of patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), and it is recurrent in the BM of patients with Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS), who have a 30-40% risk of developing MDS and AML.
RESULTS:
We report the results obtained by microarray-based comparative genomic hybridization (a-CGH) in six patients with SDS, and we compare the loss of chromosome 20 material with one patient with MDS, and with data on 92 informative patients with MDS/AML/MPN and del(20)(q) collected from the literature.
CONCLUSIONS:
The chromosome material lost in MDS/AML/MPN is highly variable with no identifiable common deleted regions, whereas in SDS the loss is more uniform: in 3/6 patients it was almost identical, and the breakpoints that we defined are probably common to most patients from the literature. In some SDS patients less material may be lost, due to different distal breakpoints, but the proximal breakpoint is in the same region, always leading to the loss of the EIF6 gene, an event which was related to a lower risk of MDS/AML in comparison with other patients
The HARPS search for southern extrasolar planets. XXIII. 8 planetary companions to low-activity solar-type stars
In this paper, we present our HARPS radial-velocity data for eight
low-activity solar-type stars belonging to the HARPS volume-limited sample:
HD6718, HD8535, HD28254, HD290327, HD43197, HD44219, HD148156, and HD156411.
Keplerian fits to these data reveal the presence of low-mass companions around
these targets. With minimum masses ranging from 0.58 to 2.54 MJup, these
companions are in the planetary mass domain. The orbital periods of these
planets range from slightly less than one to almost seven years. The eight
orbits presented in this paper exhibit a wide variety of eccentricities: from

Deletion of chromosome 20 in bone marrow of patients with Shwachman-Diamond syndrome, loss of the EIF6 gene and benign prognosis
Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome (SDS; On-line Mendelian Inheritance in Man database number 260400) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the SBDS gene in at least 90% of cases (Boocock et al, 2003). It is characterized by exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, skeletal anomalies, and bone marrow failure with variable severity of neutropenia, thrombocytopenia and anaemia (Rothbaum et al, 2002). Acquired clonal chromosome anomalies are commonly found in the bone marrow (BM), being an isochromosome for the long arms of a 7, i(7)(q10), and a deletion of the long arms of a 20, del(20)(q11), the most frequent. The relationship between these chromosome changes and the risk of patients with SDS to develop myelodysplastic syndromes and acute myeloid leukaemia (MDS/AML) has been discussed (Dror, 2005). This risk increases with the age (Shimamura, 2006), and we have also shown that the acquisition of BM clonal anomalies is age-related (Maserati et al, 2009)
Extrasolar planets and brown dwarfs around A-F type stars V. A planetary system found with HARPS around the F6IV-V star HD 60532
Aims: In the frame of the search for extrasolar planets and brown dwarfs
around early-type stars, we present the results obtained for the F-type
main-sequence star HD 60532 (F6V) with HARPS.
Methods: Using 147 spectra obtained with HARPS at La Silla on a time baseline
of two years, we study the radial velocities of this star.
Results: HD 60532 radial velocities are periodically variable, and the
variations have a Keplerian origin. This star is surrounded by a planetary
system of two planets with minimum masses of 1 and 2.5 Mjup and orbital
separations of 0.76 and 1.58 AU respectively. We also detect high-frequency,
low-amplitude (10 m/s peak-to-peak) pulsations. Dynamical studies of the system
point toward a possible 3:1 mean-motion resonance which should be confirmed

Comparing radial velocities of atmospheric lines with radiosonde measurements
The precision of radial velocity (RV) measurements depends on the precision attained on the wavelength calibration. One of the available options is to use atmospheric lines as a natural, freely available wavelength reference. Figueira et al. measured the RV of O2 lines using High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) and showed that the scatter was only of ∼10 m s−1 over a time-scale of 6 yr. Using a simple but physically motivated empirical model, they demonstrated a precision of 2 m s−1, roughly twice the average photon noise contribution. In this paper, we take advantage of a unique opportunity to confirm the sensitivity of the telluric absorption lines' RV to different atmospheric and observing conditions by means of contemporaneous in situ wind measurements. This opportunity is a result of the work done during site testing and characterization for the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). The HARPS spectrograph was used to monitor telluric standards while contemporaneous atmospheric data were collected using radiosondes. We quantitatively compare the information recovered by the two independent approaches. The RV model fitting yielded results similar to that of Figueira et al., with lower wind magnitude values and varied wind direction. The probes confirmed the average low wind magnitude and suggested that the average wind direction is a function of time as well. However, these results are affected by large uncertainty bars that probably result from a complex wind structure as a function of height. The two approaches deliver the same results in what concerns wind magnitude and agree on wind direction when fitting is done in segments of a couple of hours. Statistical tests show that the model provides a good description of the data on all time-scales, being always preferable to not fitting any atmospheric variation. The smaller the time-scale on which the fitting can be performed (down to a couple of hours), the better the description of the real physical parameters is. We then conclude that the two methods deliver compatible results, down to better than 5 m s−1 and less than twice the estimated photon noise contribution on O2 lines' RV measurement. However, we cannot rule out that parameters α and γ (dependence on airmass and zero-point, respectively) have a dependence on time or exhibit some cross-talk with other parameters, an issue suggested by some of the result
Bayesian evidence for two companions orbiting HIP 5158
We present results of a Bayesian analysis of radial velocity (RV) data for
the star HIP 5158, confirming the presence of two companions and also
constraining their orbital parameters. Assuming Keplerian orbits, the
two-companion model is found to be e^{48} times more probable than the
one-planet model, although the orbital parameters of the second companion are
only weakly constrained. The derived orbital periods are 345.6 +/- 2.0 d and
9017.8 +/- 3180.7 d respectively, and the corresponding eccentricities are 0.54
+/- 0.04 and 0.14 +/- 0.10. The limits on planetary mass (m \sin i) and
semimajor axis are (1.44 +/- 0.14 M_{J}, 0.89 +/- 0.01 AU) and (15.04 +/- 10.55
M_{J}, 7.70 +/- 1.88 AU) respectively. Owing to large uncertainty on the mass
of the second companion, we are unable to determine whether it is a planet or a
brown dwarf. The remaining `noise' (stellar jitter) unaccounted for by the
model is 2.28 +/- 0.31 m/s. We also analysed a three-companion model, but found
