Information, information processing and gravity
I discuss fundamental limits placed on information and information processing
by gravity. Such limits arise because both information and its processing
require energy, while gravitational collapse (formation of a horizon or black
hole) restricts the amount of energy allowed in a finite region. Specifically,
I use a criterion for gravitational collapse called the hoop conjecture. Once
the hoop conjecture is assumed a number of results can be obtained directly:
the existence of a fundamental uncertainty in spatial distance of order the
Planck length, bounds on information (entropy) in a finite region, and a bound
on the rate of information processing in a finite region. In the final section
I discuss some cosmological issues related to the total amount of information
in the universe, and note that almost all detailed aspects of the late universe
are determined by the randomness of quantum outcomes. This paper is based on a

"It isn't just consultants that need a BSc": student experiences of an Intercalated BSc
More medical schools are moving towards a compulsory intercalated BSc. These courses have not traditionally been aimed at those students interested in general practice and have tended to have limited clinical relevance. This paper explores the perceptions of students who undertook a BSc in primary health care using qualitative methodology comprising semi-structured interviews with students just before completion of their course. Interviews were undertaken with 24 of the 26 students who started the course over a 4-year period. All the students have finished the course and have graduated with good honours degrees. Students refine existing skills and develop new, relevant skills for medicine. The students discussed the prestige (or lack) of a BSc in this field and how the course has impacted on their career decisions. A Primary Health Care BSc such as this appears to give students an in depth and to some, a positive view of general practice and primary care. The course allowed students to develop a more critical approach to medicine and enabled them to develop skills in addition to those acquired from their undergraduate medicine course. They perceived that these skills will serve them throughout their career in whatever branch of medicine they choose
Symmetry-enhanced supertransfer of delocalized quantum states
Coherent hopping of excitation rely on quantum coherence over physically
extended states. In this work, we consider simple models to examine the effect
of symmetries of delocalized multi-excitation states on the dynamical
timescales, including hopping rates, radiative decay, and environmental
interactions. While the decoherence (pure dephasing) rate of an extended state
over N sites is comparable to that of a non-extended state, superradiance leads
to a factor of N enhancement in decay and absorption rates. In addition to
superradiance, we illustrate how the multi-excitonic states exhibit
`supertransfer' in the far-field regime: hopping from a symmetrized state over
N sites to a symmetrized state over M sites at a rate proportional to MN. We
argue that such symmetries could play an operational role in physical systems
based on the competition between symmetry-enhanced interactions and localized
inhomogeneities and environmental interactions that destroy symmetry. As an
example, we propose that supertransfer and coherent hopping play a role in
recent observations of anomolously long diffusion lengths in nano-engineered
assembly of light-harvesting complexes.Comment: 6 page
Lack of an HSP70 heat shock response in two Antarctic marine invertebrates
Members of the HSP70 gene family comprising the inducible (HSP70) genes and GRP78 (glucose-regulated protein 78 kDa) were identified in an Antarctic sea star (Odontaster validus) and an Antarctic gammarid (Paraceradocus gibber). These genes were surveyed for expression levels via Q-PCR after an acute 2-hour heat shock experiment in both animals and a time course assay in O. validus. No significant up-regulation was detected for any of the genes in either of the animals during the acute heat shock. The time course experiment in O. validus produced slightly different results with an initial down regulation in these genes at 2°C, but no significant up-regulation of the genes either at 2 or 6°C. Therefore, the classical heat shock response is absent in both species. The data is discussed in the context of the organisms’ thermal tolerance and the applicability of HSP70 to monitor thermal stress in Antarctic marine organisms
On the Emergence of Nonextensivity at the Edge of Quantum Chaos
We explore the border between regular and chaotic quantum dynamics,
characterized by a power law decrease in the overlap between a state evolved
under chaotic dynamics and the same state evolved under a slightly perturbed
dynamics. This region corresponds to the edge of chaos for the classical map
from which the quantum chaotic dynamics is derived and can be characterized via

Multiperson Utility
We approach the problem of preference aggregation by endowing both individuals and coalitions with partially-ordered or incomplete cardinal preferences. Consistency across preferences for coalitions comes in the form of the Extended Pareto Rule: if two disjoint coalitions A and B prefer x to y, then so does the coalition A*B. The Extended Pareto Rule has important consequences for the social aggregation of individual preferences. Restricting attention to the case of complete individual preferences, and assuming complete preferences for some pairs of agents (interpersonal comparisons of utility units), we discover that the Extended Pareto Rule imposes a "no arbitrage" condition in the terms of utility comparison between agents. Furthermore, if all the individuals and pairs have complete preferences and certain non-degeneracy conditions are met, then we witness the emergence of a complete preference ordering for coalitions of all sizes. The corresponding utilities are a weighted sum of individual utilities, with the n-1 independent weights obtained from the preferences of n-1 pairs forming a spanning tree in the group. Quantum Computing with Globally Controlled Exchange-type Interactions
If the interaction between qubits in a quantum computer has a non-diagonal
form (e.g. the Heisenberg interaction), then one must be able to "switch it
off" in order to prevent uncontrolled propagation of states. Therefore, such QC
schemes typically demand local control of the interaction strength between each
pair of neighboring qubits. Here we demonstrate that this degree of control is
not necessary: it suffices to switch the interaction collectively - something
that can in principle be achieved by global fields rather than with local
manipulations. This observation may offer a significant simplification for
various solid state, optical lattice and NMR implementations.Comment: 3 pages inc. 3 figure
Entanglement in a Valence-Bond-Solid State
We study entanglement in Valence-Bond-Solid state. It describes the ground
state of Affleck, Kennedy, Lieb and Tasaki quantum spin chain. The AKLT model
has a gap and open boundary conditions. We calculate an entropy of a subsystem
(continuous block of spins). It quantifies the entanglement of this block with
the rest of the ground state. We prove that the entanglement approaches a
constant value exponentially fast as the size of the subsystem increases.
Actually we proved that the density matrix of the continuous block of spins
depends only on the length of the block, but not on the total size of the chain
[distance to the ends also not essential]. We also study reduced density
matrices of two spins both in the bulk and on the boundary. We evaluated
