There are large extents of salt affected lands in Sri Lanka, which is estimated to be'223,000 hectares or about 3% of land area of the island, mainly in dry zone areas. Thisseverely affect the productivity of the agricultural lands. And selection of salt-toleranttreelcrop species is considered to be one of the alternatives to overcome this problem. Two separate pot experiments were conducted to study the effect of different salinitylevels on growth performances of cashew nut (Anacardium occidentale L) and Ranawara(Aceasia aurieulata L) at the Faculty of Agriculture, Mapalana. Each tree speciesconsisted of eight treatments, which were differentiated, with different concentrations ofsalinity (i.e. 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 20mmhos/cm). The experimental design for bothexperiments were Complete Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 replicates. One month oldplants raised in poly bags (10" x-Iz") were used to apply different treatments. 100 ml ofsaline water, which, was prepared by diluting sea water in different treatments wasapplied twice a week. Plant height and the dry matter yield of shoots and roots weremeasured at 3, 6, and 9 weeks after the treatment applicationThe results revealed that plant height, shoot and root biomass has decreased Significantlywith increasing levels of saline water up to 12mmhoslcm compared to the control wherenormal water (O.13mmhoslcm) is applied in cashew nut. Ranawara seems to be more salttolerant. At the early stage, shoot height. shoot weight and root weight significantlydecreased with increasing level of salinity but at latter stage they were not much affectedwith increasing level of salinity. Therefore Ranawara could be recommended as mediumsalt tolerant tree species while cashew nut is not much tolerant to salinity.

A physicochemical survey of water quality and benthic macroinvertebrates at two rivers namely Sungai Dekong and Dawai in Lojing Highland was conducted on 23 and 24, January 2014. Three stations were selected for physicochemical water quality, one station at Sungai Dekong and two other stations at Sungai Dawai. On the other hand, benthic macroinvertebrates were collected at nine stations, i.e. three stations at Sungai Dekong and the other six stations at Sungai Dawai. Result shows that, Station 1 (Sungai Dekong) recorded Very Poor Biological Monitoring Working Party, BMWP (2.0-12.0), Poor Average Species per Taxon, ASPT (2.0-4.0), Poor Citizen Monitoring Biotic Index, CMBI (2.0-2.3), Fairly Poor Family Biotic Index, FBI (5.3-6.0) and Poor Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera or EPT Index (0.0). However, the Water Quality Index WQI (70.01) falls into Class III which can be categorized as Slightly Polluted River. On the other hand, Station 2 (Sungai Dawai downstream) recorded better Biotic and Ecological Index but lower Water Quality Index as compared to Station 1. It recorded Moderate BMWP (26.0-84.0), Very Good ASPT (5.3-6.5), Good CMBI (2.7-3.2), Excellent FBI (3.4-4.3) and Moderate EPT Index (2.0-5.0). However, the WQI (54.99) falls into Class III, and can be categorized as Polluted River. Finally, Station 3 (the most upstream station at Sungai Dawai) recorded almost similar Biotic and Ecological Index with Station 2 but in terms of WQI revealed a significant difference. Station 3 recorded Poor BMWP (34.0-46.0), Very Good ASPT (6.5-6.8), Good CMBI (2.9-3.1), Excellent FBI (3.1-3.9) and Moderate EPT Index (3.0-4.0). However, it's WQI (84.48) falls into Class II which could be categorized as Cleaned River. As a conclusion, physicochemical river water quality was not the only contributing factor to the Biotic Index at the highland rivers as per other factors such as river substrates, river discharge, aquatic plants, river riparian and river canopy

    Get PDF
The construction industry plays significant roles in the country's economic development and growth. There would be a domino impact on the economy if any construction projects are being delayed. As the pandemic of COVID-19 had arisen into our global that had affected the construction industry, including building projects. Identifying the underlying problems caused by COVID-19 can provide the best solution to reduce the pandemic's impact. Consequently, emphasizing the impact of COVID-19 and the strategies to address those problems in the building construction industry becomes vital. Thus, this research objective is to identify problems caused by COVID-19 in the building construction industry and mechanisms to reduce COVID-19's negative impact. The data collection involved individual interviews with 20 contractor companies that are engaged in building construction projects. Then, the data is analyzed using the thematic analysis approach. The findings show that COVID-19 is causing operational and financial issues, while financial aids and complete information is needed to overcome those impacts. These findings will help policymakers improve existing strategic plans and create new policies to cope with the circumstances caused by COVID-19 among building construction organizations

Diffusion coefficients of trivalent rare earth/actinide ions in acid and alkaline aqueous solutions

    Get PDF
Leaching is one of the key process of rare earth (RE) element recovery. This paper was set out to validate the effectiveness of acid/alkali in RE leaching by measuring the limiting ionic conductivity (λo), self-diffusion coefficient (Di) and overall diffusion coefficient (DAB) to obtain a clear insight on the transport properties of ions and salts in aqueous solution. The calculation diffusivity of Di which is diffuse individual ions in pure water and DAB diffuse in chemical reagents were determined using Nernst-Haskell equation, applicable for 25°C. The results of D i were found to be consistent with experimental data from the literature where most of calculation and experiment data are less than 5% error. The final outcome had managed to confirm that NaOH is best reagent for most RE element leaching, which suits the common practice of the industry

Proteomics of trunking and non-trunking sago palm (metroxylon sagu rottb.)

    Get PDF
Sago plant stores its starch in the trunk. It is considered mature and ready to be harvested when reaches 6-8 years of growth. However, there are instances where sago palms in plantations remain stunted even after 10-14 years, thus devoid of starch in its trunk. This is known as non-trunking sago palm. The non-trunking phenotype of Metroxylon sagu eliminates the economical value of the plant and this is one of the major concerns of sago plantation till this day. Our research group has embarked on efforts to identify molecular factors that contribute to the differences between two groups of sago palm including their proteomics. Part of the work involves comparative proteomics analysis of trunking and non-trunking sago palm leaf. Prior to that, protein extraction and preparation, protein separation by one-or two-dimensional electrophoresis (1-DE or 2-DE, respectively), followed by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) were described. Using 2D gel electrophoresis, MALDI-TOF and RP-HPLC, we have identified several proteins that showed differences in level of protein expression between the two groups of sago palm

The advancement of Green Concept studies has triggered some significant disarray about the manner of the build and rendered it difficult for everything except the most passionate peruses to remain conscious of advances in this area. Even though many green initiatives introduced in the world, consumers’ acceptance of green concept and green products still uncertain. The lack of research to examine green concept makes things worse. Therefore studying and the understanding of green concept and attitudes towards the consumption elements of green products are important research gaps to introduce useful country-specific green marketing strategies. Future research would therefore, be solely important and help government policy developers and marketers to develop strategies which are country specific. This article reviews the notion of green in relation to associated concepts and empirical consequences discovered in the existing sphere of knowledge. Researchers accompanied literature review as the primary methodology for reviewing current empirical knowledge to construct conceptual content to assist the suggested directions for the study. The findings of the study provide insights into how empirical results are reflected in literature reviews that connect the Green concept with associated ideas and consequences. Based on the discussion, conclude future study directions in line with the gaps in empirical knowledge discovered within.  Article visualizations

    Closed Aromatic Tubes-Capsularenes

    Get PDF
In this study, we describe a synthetic method for incorporating arenes into closed tubes that we name capsularenes. First, we prepared vase-shaped molecular baskets 4–7. The baskets comprise a benzene base fused to three bicycle[2.2.1]heptane rings that extend into phthalimide (4), naphthalimide (6), and anthraceneimide sides (7), each carrying a dimethoxyethane acetal group. In the presence of catalytic trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), the acetals at top of 4, 6 and 7 change into aliphatic aldehydes followed by their intramolecular cyclization into 1,3,5-trioxane (1H NMR spectroscopy). Such ring closure is nearly a quantitative process that furnishes differently sized capsularenes 1 (0.7×0.9 nm), 8 (0.7×1.1 nm;) and 9 (0.7×1.4 nm;) characterized by X-Ray crystallography, microcrystal electron diffraction, UV/Vis, fluorescence, cyclic voltammetry, and thermogravimetry. With exceptional rigidity, unique topology, great thermal stability, and perhaps tuneable optoelectronic characteristics, capsularenes hold promise for the construction of novel organic electronic devices
