    Learning to rank from medical imaging data

    Medical images can be used to predict a clinical score coding for the severity of a disease, a pain level or the complexity of a cognitive task. In all these cases, the predicted variable has a natural order. While a standard classifier discards this information, we would like to take it into account in order to improve prediction performance. A standard linear regression does model such information, however the linearity assumption is likely not be satisfied when predicting from pixel intensities in an image. In this paper we address these modeling challenges with a supervised learning procedure where the model aims to order or rank images. We use a linear model for its robustness in high dimension and its possible interpretation. We show on simulations and two fMRI datasets that this approach is able to predict the correct ordering on pairs of images, yielding higher prediction accuracy than standard regression and multiclass classification techniques

    Should retail trade companies avoid recruiting maximisers?

    The purpose of this paper is to investigate differences in characteristics, job outcome experiences and attitudes of maximiser and satisficer decision-making style groups working in the retail trade. Design/methodology/approach - A survey of 140 participants who have accepted a job offer in the retail trade in the past six months in the USA was conducted on Amazon Mechanical Turk. The survey examined participants’ opinions and attitudes towards their present job and established which job information source(s) they had used to search for retail trade job-related information. Findings - The results show that compared to satisficers, maximisers exert more effort when searching job information, have higher uncertainty avoidance and need for cognition, and experience more post-decisional regret. In this sample, any significant differences between maximisers and satisficers in relation to job satisfaction, company commitment, and intention to quit their present job are restricted to certain groups. For recruitment information sources, while satisficers rely on their families and friends for information, maximisers are more likely to obtain job-related information from other sources such as online discussion forums. Practical implications - Even though some studies suggest that maximisers are unhappy with their choices, this research recommends that retail trade companies should not exclude maximisers from their recruitment pools. Retailers should enhance their candidate pools with both maximisers and satisficers by managing different recruitment information sources. Originality/value - Research of decision-making style in recruitment is relatively limited. This research illustrates the differences of attitudes between maximisers and satisficers towards their present retail job, and also demonstrates the preferences of maximisers and satisficers in recruitment information sources

    Coupled digital image correlation and quasi-static elasticity imaging of inhomogeneous orthotropic composite structures

    The ability to accurately determine elastic properties of orthotropic materials is important in the design and health assessment of composite structures. Direct methods using strain gauges and extensometers for estimating orthotropic properties have become popular in recent years. In cases where strains are highly localized, the material properties are inhomogeneous, or the material has localized damage, the use of these measurement schemes often provides insufficient information. To address this, we propose an inverse method, based on quasi-static elasticity imaging (QSEI) for determining inhomogeneous orthotropic elastic properties using distributed displacement measurements obtained from digital image correlation (DIC). The QSEI-based approach is first tested with simulated noisy displacement data considering in-plane deformations of plate geometries undergoing stretching and bending. Following this, experimental DIC measurements are applied to test the feasibility of the QSEI-based approach. Elastic properties of uni-directional CFRP beams with and without localized damage are estimated using the proposed approach. Results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed inverse approach

    Using the one-loop helicity amplitudes for low-energy νγνγ\nu\gamma\to\nu\gamma and νˉγνˉγ\bar\nu\gamma\to\bar\nu\gamma scattering in the standard model with massless neutrinos, we study the optical activity of a sea of neutrinos and antineutrinos.     Large lepton asymmetry from Q-balls

    We propose a scenario which can explain large lepton asymmetry and small baryon asymmetry simultaneously. Large lepton asymmetry is generated through Affleck-Dine (AD) mechanism and almost all the produced lepton numbers are absorbed into Q-balls (L-balls). If the lifetime of the L-balls is longer than the onset of electroweak phase transition but shorter than the epoch of big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN), the large lepton asymmetry in the L-balls is protected from sphaleron effects. On the other hand, small (negative) lepton numbers are evaporated from the L-balls due to thermal effects, which are converted into the observed small baryon asymmetry by virtue of sphaleron effects. Large and positive lepton asymmetry of electron type is often requested from BBN. In our scenario, choosing an appropriate flat direction in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), we can produce positive lepton asymmetry of electron type but totally negative lepton asymmetry.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, ReVTeX

    Activating mutations of STAT5B and STAT3 in lymphomas derived from γδ-T or NK cells

    Lymphomas arising from NK or γδ-T cells are very aggressive diseases and little is known regarding their pathogenesis. Here we report frequent activating mutations of STAT3 and STAT5B in NK/T-cell lymphomas (n=51), γδ-T-cell lymphomas (n=43) and their cell lines (n=9) through next generation and/or Sanger sequencing. STAT5B N642H is particularly frequent in all forms of γδ-T-cell lymphomas. STAT3 and STAT5B mutations are associated with increased phosphorylated protein and a growth advantage to transduced cell lines or normal NK cells. Growth-promoting activity of the mutants can be partially inhibited by a JAK1/2 inhibitor. Molecular modelling and surface plasmon resonance measurements of the N642H mutant indicate a marked increase in binding affinity of the phosphotyrosine-Y699 with the mutant histidine. This is associated with the prolonged persistence of the mutant phosphoSTAT5B and marked increase of binding to target sites. Our findings suggest that JAK-STAT pathway inhibition may represent a therapeutic strategy. © 2015 Macmillan Publishers Limited. All rights reserved

    Electrooxidation of glucose by binder-free bimetallic Pd1Ptx/graphene aerogel/nickel foam composite electrodes with low metal loading in basic medium

    Many 2D graphene-based catalysts for electrooxidation of glucose involved the use of binders and toxic reducing agents in the preparation of the electrodes, which potentially causes the masking of original activity of the electrocatalysts. In this study, a green method was developed to prepare binder-free 3D graphene aerogel/nickel foam electrodes in which bimetallic Pd-Pt NP alloy with different at% ratios were loaded on 3D graphene aerogel. The influence of Pd/Pt ratio (at%: 1:2.9, 1:1.31, 1:1.03), glucose concentration (30 mM, 75 mM, 300 mM, 500 mM) and NaOH concentration (0.1 M, 1 M) on electrooxidation of glucose were investigated. The catalytic activity of the electrodes was enhanced with increasing the Pd/Pt ratio from 1:2.9 to 1:1.03, and changing the NaOH/glucose concentration from 75 mM glucose/0.1 M NaOH to 300 mM glucose/1 M NaOH. The Pd1Pt1.03/GA/NF electrode achieved a high current density of 388.59 A g−1 under the 300 mM glucose/1 M NaOH condition. The stability of the electrodes was also evaluated over 1000 cycles. This study demonstrated that the Pd1Pt1.03/GA/NF electrode could be used as an anodic electrode in glucose-based fuel cells

    Proximity effect at superconducting Sn-Bi2Se3 interface

    We have investigated the conductance spectra of Sn-Bi2Se3 interface junctions down to 250 mK and in different magnetic fields. A number of conductance anomalies were observed below the superconducting transition temperature of Sn, including a small gap different from that of Sn, and a zero-bias conductance peak growing up at lower temperatures. We discussed the possible origins of the smaller gap and the zero-bias conductance peak. These phenomena support that a proximity-effect-induced chiral superconducting phase is formed at the interface between the superconducting Sn and the strong spin-orbit coupling material Bi2Se3.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure
