The long-term optical behavior of MRK421
All data available in B band for the BL Lac object MRK421 from 22
publications are used to construct a historical light curve, dating back to
1900. It is found that the light curve is very complicated and consists of a
set of outbursts with very large duration. The brightness of MRK421 varies from
11.6 magnitude to more than 16 magnitude. Analyses with Jurkevich method of
computing period of cyclic phenomena reveal in the light curve two kinds of
behaviors. The first one is non-periodic with rapid, violent variations in
intensity on time scales of hours to days. The second one is periodic with a
possible period of years. Another possible period of years is not very significant. We have tested the robustness of the
Jurkevich method. The period of about one year found in the light curves of
MRK421 and of other objects is a spurious period due to the method and the
observing window. We try to explain the period of years under the
thermal instability of a slim accretion disk around a massive black hole of

Rheo-diecasting AZ91D magnesium alloy
Magnesium recycling has become more important in todayās environmentally aware society. To prompt the usage of recycled magnesium scrap and further improve casting structure and properties, a novel physical approach, the rheo-diecasting process (RDC), has been applied in the present study to deal with AZ91D Mg-alloy directly from die-casting scrap. The experimental results show that the RDC process can be used to produce recycled AZ91D alloy with fine and uniform microstructure and a very low level of porosity. The intermetallic compounds containing the impurity elements were of fine and of spherical morphology, distributed uniformly in the alloy matrix. No oxide particle clusters or oxide films were found in the RDC microstructure. The tensile properties of the recycled AZ91D alloy were comparable to those produced by RDC from the primary alloy ingots., and much better than those produced by conventional High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC)
Design and analysis of a wire-driven flexible manipulator for bronchoscopic interventions
Bronchoscopic interventions are widely performed for the diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases. However, for most endobronchial devices, the lack of a bendable tip restricts their access ability to get into distal bronchi with complex bifurcations. This paper presents the design of a new wire-driven continuum manipulator to help guide these devices. The proposed manipulator is built by assembling miniaturized blocks that are featured with interlocking circular joints. It has the capability of maintaining its integrity when the lengths of actuation wires change due to the shaft flex. It allows the existence of a relatively large central cavity to pass through other instruments and enables two rotational degrees of freedom. All these features make it suitable for procedures where tubular anatomies are involved and the flexible shafts have to be considerably bent in usage, just like bronchoscopic interventions. A kinematic model is built to estimate the relationship between the translations of actuation wires and the manipulator tip position. A scale-up model is produced for evaluation experiments and the results validate the performance of the proposed mechanism
Rheo-processing of an alloy specifically designed for semi-solid metal processing on the Al-Mg-Si system
Semi-solid metal (SSM) processing is a promising technology for forming alloys and composites to near-net shaped products. Alloys currently used for SSM processing are mainly conventional aluminium cast alloys. This is an obstacle to the realisation of full potential of SSM processing, since these alloys were originally designed for liquid state processing and not for semi-solid state processing. Therefore, there is a significant need for designing new alloys specifically for semi-solid state processing to fulfil its potential. In this study, thermodynamic calculations have been carried out to design alloys based on the Al-Mg-Si system for SSM processing via the āRheo-routeā. The suitability of a selected alloy composition has been assessed in terms of the criteria considered by the thermodynamic design process, mechanical properties and heat treatability. The newly designed alloy showed good processability with rheo-processing in terms of good control of solid fraction during processing and a reasonably large processing window. The mechanical property variation was very small and the alloy showed good potential for age hardening by T5 temper heat treatment after rheo-processing
Robust filtering with randomly varying sensor delay: The finite-horizon case

The delayed sensor measurement is assumed to be a linear function of a stochastic variable that satisfies the Bernoulli random binary distribution law. An upper bound for the actual covariance of the uncertain stochastic parameter system is derived and used for estimation variance constraints. Such an upper bound is then minimized over the filter parameters for all stochastic sensor delays and admissible deterministic uncertainties. It is shown that the desired filter can be obtained in terms of solutions to two discrete Riccati difference equations of a form suitable for recursive computation in online applications. An illustrative example is presented to show the applicability of the proposed method
Morphology, structure, optical, and electrical properties of AgSbOā
The morphology of defect pyrochlore-type, AgSbOā microparticle/nanoparticles obtained via solid state reaction evolve from irregular to Fullerene-like polyhedra before finally decomposing into metal-organic framework-5 like particles with increase in sintering temperature. The defect pyrochlore-type AgSbOā particles are slightly Ag deficient while the valence of the antimony ion is shown to be +5 giving rise to a probable stoichiometry of AgāĖā SbVOāĖā/ā, with xā¼0.01ā0.04. A highly structured diffuse intensity distribution observed via electron diffraction is interpreted in terms of correlated displacements of one-dimensional (1D) silver ion chains along āØ110ā© directions. A redshifting in the absorption edges in UV-visible absorption spectra is observed for samples prepared at sintering temperatures higher than 1000āĀ°C and attributed to the surface plasma resonance effect associated with small amounts of excess metallic Ag on the AgāĖā SbVOāĖā/ā particles. An electrical properties investigation of the silver antimonate samples via dielectric, conductivity, and electric modulus spectroscopy shows a prominent dielectric relaxation associated with grain boundaries. The silver ion conductivity is associated with correlated displacements of 1D silver ion chains along āØ110ā© directions.Z.G.Y., Y.L., and R.L.W. acknowledge financial support

Microstructural characterisation and thermal stability of an Mg-Al-Sr alloy prepared by rheo-diecasting
A commercial Mg-6Al-2Sr (AJ62) alloy has been prepared by a semisolid rheo-diecasting (RDC) process. The microstructure of the RDC alloy exhibits typical semisolid solidification features, i.e., 8.4 vol% primary Ī±-Mg globules (23 Ī¼m in diameter), formed in the slurry maker at the primary solidification stage, uniformly distributed in the matrix of fine Ī±-Mg grain size (8.2 Ī¼m) and intergranular eutectic Al4Sr lamellae, which resulted from secondary solidification inside the die. A ternary Mg-Al-Sr phase was also observed. Heat treatment revealed the extreme thermal stability of the RDC AJ62 alloy. The hardness showed little change up to 12 hours at 450Ā°C, whilst the Al4Sr eutectic lamellae were broken up, spheroidised and coarsened during the annealing. The RDC alloy offers superior mechanical properties, especially ductility, over the same alloy produced by high pressure die-casting
