    Distribution and associated factors of optic disc diameter and cup-to-disc ratio in an elderly Chinese population

    AbstractBackgroundGlaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide and East Asian people account for almost half of those affected. Vertical elongation of the optic cup is a characteristic feature of glaucoma. However, there is a significant overlap in the vertical cup-to-disc ratio (VCDR) between normal eyes and eyes affected by glaucoma. The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of VCDR and vertical disc diameter (VDD) and their predictive factors in a population of elderly Chinese residents in Taiwan.MethodsFour hundred and sixty elderly Chinese residents aged 72 years and older in the Shihpai district, Taipei, Taiwan participated in this study. Slit lamp biomicroscopic measurement of the VCDR and VDD after pupil dilation with a 78 diopter lens was performed by one glaucoma specialist. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to fit the best model for independent variables.ResultsThe VCDR was recorded for 438 right eyes and 430 left eyes. After excluding participants with glaucoma, the mean ± SD VCDR was 0.44 ± 0.17 for both eyes, and the 97.5th percentile was 0.8. A greater VCDR was associated with a longer axial length [VCDR = −0.47 + 0.04(axial length)] under multiple regression analysis. The VDD was obtained for 420 right eyes and 406 left eyes. The mean ± SD VDD for all participants was 1.77 ± 0.22 mm for the right eye and 1.79 ± 0.22 mm for the left eye. A higher body mass index (BMI) and a longer axial length were significantly associated with a larger VDD under multiple regression analysis. [VDD = −0.05 + 0.07 (axial length) + 0.06 (obesity); if BMI <24, then obesity = 0; if BMI ≄24, then obesity = 1]. A larger VDD was associated with a larger VCDR (p < 0.001) and the VCDR could be predicted by the equation VCDR = −0.07 + 0.3VDD.ConclusionA greater VCDR was related to a longer axial length.     Angelica Sinensis promotes myotube hypertrophy through the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway

    BACKGROUND: Angelica Sinensis (AS), a folk medicine, has long been used in ergogenic aids for athletes, but there is little scientific evidence supporting its effects. We investigated whether AS induces hypertrophy in myotubes through the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt (also termed PKB)/mammalian target of the rapamycin (mTOR) pathway. METHODS: An in vitro experiment investigating the induction of hypertrophy in myotubes was conducted. To investigate whether AS promoted the hypertrophy of myotubes, an established in vitro model of myotube hypertrophy with and without AS was used and examined using microscopic images. The role of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway in AS-induced myotube hypertrophy was evaluated. Two inhibitors, wortmannin (an inhibitor of PI3K) and rapamycin (an inhibitor of mTOR), were used. RESULT: The results revealed that the myotube diameters in the AS-treated group were significantly larger than those in the untreated control group (P < 0.05). Wortmannin and rapamycin inhibited AS-induced hypertrophy. Furthermore, AS increased Akt and mTOR phosphorylation through the PI3K pathway and induced myotube hypertrophy. CONCLUSION: The results confirmed that AS induces hypertrophy in myotubes through the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway

    What is Needed for Future 3D Printing from Maker’S Viewpoints

    This study focused on investigating makers’ opinions about current 3D printing technology to foster the development and use of 3D printing technologies in Taiwan. 3D printing has revolutionized the manufacturing industries as it provided a highly flexible, customizable way of small-quantity production at low cost. Its popularity among general users, however, encountered difficulties such as high requirements in skills, less user-friendliness, lack of practicality, low reliability, etc. Makers, a special group of customers of 3D printers are familiar with problems of this technology as they shared experience on the Internet, started collaborative manufacturing with open sources and turned their DIY activities into E-business. The study utilized questionnaires in the makers’ space to obtain the background of this special group of customers, their viewpoints regarding important features to consider for purchasing a 3D printer, and difficulties and solutions in propagation of 3D printing. The results demonstrated that makers were a group of extrovert and intuitive thinkers in terms of MBTI personalities and treasured printing precision (surface quality), stability (long tuning period) and easy maintenance as most attractive factors to customers. From their viewpoints, difficulties in use, customers’ low interests, and lack of practicality of its products were rated top 3 problems for 3D printing. However, school education, propagation of makers’ space and development of ease-to-use 3D software may help its popularity. The results of this study may help 3D printer manufacturers and 3D printing service providers to better understand their customers’ behaviors, based on which better 3D printing services and 3D printers can be developed to improve their business

    BN-embedded monolayer graphene with tunable electronic and topological properties

    Finding an effective and controllable way to create a sizable energy gap in graphene-based systems has been a challenging topic of intensive research. We propose that the hybrid of boron nitride and graphene (h-BNC) at low BN doping serves as an ideal platform for band-gap engineering and valleytronic applications. We report a systematic first-principles study of the atomic configurations and band gap opening for energetically favorable BN patches embedded in graphene. Based on first-principles calculations, we construct a tight-binding model to simulate general doping configurations in large supercells. Unexpectedly, the calculations find a linear dependence of the band gap on the effective BN concentration at low doping, arising from an induced effective on-site energy difference at the two C sublattices as they are substituted by B and N dopants alternately. The significant and tunable band gap of a few hundred meVs, with preserved topological properties of graphene and feasible sample preparation in the laboratory, presents great opportunities to realize valley physics applications in graphene systems at room temperature

    The Clinical COPD Questionnaire Correlated with BODE Index-A Cross-Sectional Study

    The Global initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) staging has widely used in the stratification of the severity of COPD, while BODE (body mass index, airflow obstruction, dyspnea, and exercise capacity) index was proven superior to FEV1 in predicting mortality, exacerbation and disease severity in patients with COPD. Clinical COPD Questionnaire (CCQ), a questionnaire with ten items categorized into three domains (symptoms, functional state and mental state) was developed to measure health status of COPD patients. However, little is known about the relationship between CCQ score and BODE index. We performed a prospective study with the inclusion of 89 patients who were clinically stable after a 6-week-therapy for COPD symptoms comparing their health status assessed by CCQ, BODE index and GOLD staging. We found that the total CCQ score was correlated with BODE score (P < 0.001) and GOLD staging (P < 0.001); of three CCQ domains, the functional status correlated the most with BODE index (rS = 0.670) and GOLD staging (rS = 0.531), followed by symptoms (rS = 0.482; rS = 0.346, respectively), and mental status (rS = 0.340; rS = 0.236, respectively). Our data suggest that CCQ is a reliable and convenient alternative tool to evaluate the severity of COPD

    Developmental Profiles of Preschool Children With Spastic Diplegic and Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy

    Cerebral palsy (CP) is a disorder of movement and posture control with multiple impairments. The clinical manifestations of CP vary among children. The aim of this study was to compare the developmental profiles of preschool children with either of two types of CP: spastic diplegic (SD) CP and spastic quadriplegic (SQ) CP. Relationships between the children's various developmental functions were also investigated. We recruited 137 children with spastic CP, aged 1-5 years (mean age = 3.7 ± 2.1 years), and we classified them into two groups: SD (n = 59) and SQ (n = 78). The comparison group comprised 18 children with typical development. Developmental functions were assessed in all the children, using the Chinese Child Development Inventory with the updated norms. This scale addressed eight functional domains: gross motor ability, fine motor ability, expressive language ability, concept comprehension ability, situation comprehension ability, self-help ability, personal-social skills, and general development. A development quotient (DQ) was determined for each domain as a percentage of the developmental age divided by the chronological age. The developmental profiles of the CP subtypes were found to differ. Children with SQ were found to have lower DQs than those with SD (p < 0.01). There was also a difference in the distribution of DQs between the SD and SQ groups, although the lowest DQ in both groups was for the gross motor domain. An uneven delay in the development of gross motor function was found in both groups of children with CP. Motor functions, including gross motor and fine motor functions, were significantly related to self-help ability. Complex and significant correlations among developmental functions were also identified in children with CP. The findings in the present study may allow clinicians to anticipate the developmental profile of children with CP on the basis of whether they have the SD or SQ subtype. This, in turn, is likely to facilitate individual assessment, goal setting, and the planning of interventions in children with CP

    Introduction of a strong temperature-sensitive phenotype into enterovirus 71 by altering an amino acid of virus 3D polymerase

    AbstractIn 1998, an enterovirus 71 (EV71) epidemic in Taiwan resulted in 78 deaths; however, the molecular basis of EV71 pathogenicity remains poorly understood. Comparison of the deduced amino acid sequences in 3D polymerases of EV71clinical isolates showed the T251V or T251I substitution from 1986 and 1998 outbreaks. An EV71 replicon system showed that introducing an I251T mutation did not affect luciferase activities at 35 °C when compared with wild type; however, lower luciferase activities were observed when they were incubated at 39.5 °C. In addition, the I251T mutation in the EV71 infectious clone not only reduced viral replication at 39.5 °C in vitro but also decreased the virulence of the mouse adaptive strain MP4 in neonatal mice in an i.p. infection model. Therefore, these results suggested that the threonine at position 251 results in a temperature sensitivity phenotype of EV71 which may contribute to the attenuation of circulating strains
