This introduction article provides the background information about the present symposium and the summary of the articles addressed in the symposium. On the background information, the article reviewed the process of economic reform and key measures of administrative reforms. Understanding Violence In The Workplace: Social And Managerial Perspectives
This symposium examines the issue of workplace violence from social and managerial perspectives. While the social perspective refers to an understanding of the general characteristics and impact of American history, culture, and societal attitudes, the managerial perspective focuses on the identification of sources and causes of violence in modern organizations as well as the development of appropriate prevention strategies and management plans. The current introduction paper first addresses the importance of recognizing workplace violence as one of the top managerial issues. It then provides an overview of literatures on major issues related to the study of workplace violence. The paper concludes with a summary of findings presented in each symposium paper
The role of government in economic development: The Chinese experience
This study examines the role of government in China\u27s economic reform and development years. The study first provides a literature review about major functions government played in the modern economic system and the importance of government policies to economic development. It then evaluates the experience of the Chinese government in the process of reform and development by focusing on five major roles: (a) promoter of growth, (b) manager of economy, (c) distributor of income, (d) regulator of industry, and (e) protector of citizen and business. This article examines major strategies and lessons of China\u27s post-Mao economic development. The article first reviews the process and achievement of China\u27s economic development. Globalization stimulates local governments in China and the United States to step up their economic development efforts. What strategies are successful and why? Does industry cluster development lead to higher per capita income? What government infrastructure and incentives stimulate and nurture businesses? This article examines local economic development in China and the United States, comparing strategies and outlining challenging issues.
