    Permutations on the random permutation

The random permutation is the Fra\"iss\'e limit of the class of finite structures with two linear orders. Answering a problem stated by Peter Cameron in 2002, we use a recent Ramsey-theoretic technique to show that there exist precisely 39 closed supergroups of the automorphism group of the random permutation, and thereby expose all symmetries of this structure. Equivalently, we classify all structures which have a first-order definition in the random permutation.Comment: 18 page

Studies on the rejection of the transplanted homologous dog liver.

Dogs in which livers have been replaced with hepatic homografts usually die in 5 to 10 days. Liver metabolism is not detectably abnormal at first, but gradual deterioration of function commences on the fourth or fifth day. There was histologic evidence of rejection in all dogs dying after 4 days. This ranged from minimal mononuclear infiltration to almost complete destruction of parenchyma. In the longest survivor, 20 1/2 days, histologic changes were less profound than in many animals dying earlier. Widespread histologic changes were found in host reticuloendothelial system, involving the bone marrow, kidneys, lungs, lymph nodes, and other tissues. These consisted of fixed tissue proliferation and infiltration of mononuclear cells, principally plasma cells. These changes were thought to be due to a general host reticuloendothelial response to the antigenic stimulus of the homograft

Teacher Retention in the Pacific Alliance for Catholic Education Residency Model

Teacher attrition and retention has been a challenge that the educational world has faced for many years. Educators have tried to combat the attrition rates of teachers through the creation of meaningful induction programs and teacher training programs. Residency models are one form of a teacher training program whereby institutions of higher education partner with school districts to train new teachers in a clinical setting as they earn their state certification and teaching license. The University of Portland (UP) has a Catholic residency program known as the Pacific Alliance for Catholic Education (PACE). PACE began in 1998 with 3 graduates, and its 2015 graduating class had 23 graduates. This study is the first analysis of the PACE program. This study analyzes the retention rates, the demographics of graduates who stay in teaching, and the impact of PACE’s Three- Pillar Support Program (Academic Learning, Professional Service, and Community Living). This mixed-method study used a Qualtrics survey to analyze the retention rates and coded Reflective Exit Papers written by PACE participants upon graduation. This study found that 88.29% of graduates were teaching in the first year after graduation, 84.81% of graduates were still teaching three years after graduation, and 81.34% of graduates were still teaching five years after graduation. It also found that of the graduates that stayed in teaching, 92.86% stayed in Catholic school teaching in the first year after graduation, 85.29% stayed in Catholic school teaching in the third year after graduation, and 85.71% stayed in Catholic school teaching five years after graduation. Finally, it found that the Three-Pillar Support program had a major impact on PACE teachers’ decision to stay in teaching, with Academic Learning and Professional Service having the biggest impact on graduates’ decisions to stay in teaching, and Community Living having the biggest impact on graduates during their time in PACE

    Child Sexual Abuse Counseling Strategies

    Get PDF
Child sexual abuse (CSA) is increasingly recognized in survivors as a connection to emotional or psychological, relational or social and sexual or physical difficulties later in life that range in severity (Chouliara, Karatzias, Scott-Brien, MacDonald, MacArthur & Frazer, 2012). The purpose of this literature review is to enhance school counselor’s general education of child sexual abuse counseling strategies by highlighting important guidelines on detecting, reporting, and utilizing different strategies such as: when to use them, what accommodations are made to fit the victim’s needs, how to strengthen efficacy, etc. The different strategies researched are trauma focused, person centered, solution focused, cognitive behavioral therapy and play therapy. Data sources included in the review were chosen based on their significant findings, detailed description of therapy and date published. School counselors have a duty to not only be aware of this more prevalent abuse in current society, but to be well informed on the necessary elements to provide high quality counseling for each victim
