Growing Story Forest Online from Massive Breaking News
We describe our experience of implementing a news content organization system
at Tencent that discovers events from vast streams of breaking news and evolves
news story structures in an online fashion. Our real-world system has distinct
requirements in contrast to previous studies on topic detection and tracking
(TDT) and event timeline or graph generation, in that we 1) need to accurately
and quickly extract distinguishable events from massive streams of long text
documents that cover diverse topics and contain highly redundant information,
and 2) must develop the structures of event stories in an online manner,
without repeatedly restructuring previously formed stories, in order to
guarantee a consistent user viewing experience. In solving these challenges, we
propose Story Forest, a set of online schemes that automatically clusters
streaming documents into events, while connecting related events in growing
trees to tell evolving stories. We conducted extensive evaluation based on 60
GB of real-world Chinese news data, although our ideas are not
language-dependent and can easily be extended to other languages, through
detailed pilot user experience studies. The results demonstrate the superior
capability of Story Forest to accurately identify events and organize news text
into a logical structure that is appealing to human readers, compared to
multiple existing algorithm frameworks.Comment: Accepted by CIKM 2017, 9 page
Reconfigurable Intelligent Computational Surfaces: When Wave Propagation Control Meets Computing
The envisioned sixth-generation (6G) of wireless networks will involve an
intelligent integration of communications and computing, thereby meeting the
urgent demands of diverse applications. To realize the concept of the smart
radio environment, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are a promising
technology for offering programmable propagation of impinging electromagnetic
signals via external control. However, the purely reflective nature of
conventional RISs induces significant challenges in supporting
computation-based applications, e.g., wave-based calculation and signal
processing. To fulfil future communication and computing requirements, new
materials are needed to complement the existing technologies of metasurfaces,
enabling further diversification of electronics and their applications. In this
event, we introduce the concept of reconfigurable intelligent computational
surface (RICS), which is composed of two reconfigurable multifunctional layers:
the `reconfigurable beamforming layer' which is responsible for tunable signal
reflection, absorption, and refraction, and the `intelligence computation
layer' that concentrates on metamaterials-based computing. By exploring the
recent trends on computational metamaterials, RICSs have the potential to make
joint communication and computation a reality. We further demonstrate two
typical applications of RICSs for performing wireless spectrum sensing and
secrecy signal processing. Future research challenges arising from the design
and operation of RICSs are finally highlighted
Iron chelation effect of curcumin and baicalein on aplastic anemia mouse model with iron overload
Objective(s): The current work aimed to assess whether curcumin and baicalein can chelate iron in aplastic anemia (AA) complicated with iron overload, exploring the potential mechanisms.Materials and Methods: A mouse model of AA with iron overload complication was firstly established. Low and high-dose curcumin or baicalein treatment groups were set up, as well as the deferoxamine positive control, normal and model groups (n=8). Hemogram and bone marrow mononuclear cell detection were performed, and TUNEL and immunohistochemical staining were used to evaluate hematopoiesis and apoptosis in the marrow. ELISA, Western blot, and qRT-PCR were employed to assess serum iron (SI), serum ferritin (SF), bone morphogenetic protein 6 (BMP-6), SMAD family member4 (SMAD4) and transferrin receptor 2 (TfR2) amounts. Results: Both curcumin and baicalein improved white blood cell (increase of 0.28-0.64×109/l in high-dose groups) and hemoglobin (increase of around 10 g/l) amounts significantly, which may related to decreased apoptosis (nearly 30%-50% of that in the model group) in the bone marrow, while their effects on platelet recovery were limited and inferior to that of deferoxamine (DFO). Both test compounds up-regulated hepcidin and its regulators (BMP-6, SMAD, and TfR2) at the protein and mRNA levels; high dosage treatment may be beneficial, being better than DFO administration in lessening iron deposition in the bone marrow. Conclusion: Curcumin and baicalein protect hematopoiesis from immune and iron overload-induced apoptosis, exerting iron chelation effects in vivo
Adherence to diabetes risk reduction diet and the risk of head and neck cancer: a prospective study of 101,755 American adults
BackgroundAdherence to the diabetes risk reduction diet (DRRD) may potentially reduce the risk of developing head and neck cancer (HNC) as the diet includes fruits and limits red and processed meats, known risk factors for HNC. However, there is currently no epidemiological research to investigate this potential association.MethodsThe present study utilized data on demographics, lifestyles, medications, and diets of participants from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial to explore the potential association between adherence to DRRD and the risk of HNC. We used a DRRD score to evaluate adherence to the dietary pattern and employed Cox regression analysis to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for HNC risk. Several subgroup analyses were carried out to identify potential effect modifiers, and multiple sensitivity analyses were performed to evaluate the stability of the correlation. The nine components of the DRRD was assessed separately for its association with the risk of HNC.ResultsDuring a mean follow up of 8.84 years, 279 cases of HNC were observed. DDRD score was found to be inversely associated with the risk of HNC (HR Q4 vs. Q1: 0.582; 95% CI: 0.396, 0.856; p = 0.005 for trend) in a linear dose–response manner (p = 0.211 for non-linearity). Subgroup analysis indicated this inverse correlation was more pronounced among participants who had never smoked (HRQ4 vs. Q1: 0.193; 95% CI: 0.073, 0.511; p < 0.001 for trend) compared to current or former smokers (p = 0.044 for interaction). The primary association of DDRD and HNC risk remained robust after several sensitivity analyses. Regarding the individual components of DRRD, an inverse association was also observed between the risk of HNC and increased intake of cereal fiber and whole fruit (all p < 0.05 for trend).ConclusionOur findings provide evidence that following the DRRD pattern may reduce the risk of NHC, especially for non-smokers
Ultrahigh mobility and efficient charge injection in monolayer organic thin-film transistors on boron nitride
Organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) with high mobility and low contact resistance have been actively pursued as building blocks for low-cost organic electronics. In conventional solution-processed or vacuum-deposited OTFTs, due to interfacial defects and traps, the organic film has to reach a certain thickness for efficient charge transport. Using an ultimate monolayer of 2,7-dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (C8-BTBT) molecules as an OTFT channel, we demonstrate remarkable electrical characteristics, including intrinsic hole mobility over 30 cm2/Vs, Ohmic contact with 100 Ω · cm resistance, and band-like transport down to 150 K. Compared to conventional OTFTs, the main advantage of a monolayer channel is the direct, nondisruptive contact between the charge transport layer and metal leads, a feature that is vital for achieving low contact resistance and current saturation voltage. On the other hand, bilayer and thicker C8-BTBT OTFTs exhibit strong Schottky contact and much higher contact resistance but can be improved by inserting a doped graphene buffer layer. Our results suggest that highly crystalline molecular monolayers are promising form factors to build high-performance OTFTs and investigate device physics. They also allow us to precisely model how the molecular packing changes the transport and contact properties
