    Get PDF
Mental health is an important component of general well-being; it influences how we think, feel, and conduct. Mental health difficulties are common in the workplace and may have serious consequences for both individuals and companies. It may result in lower productivity, more absenteeism, high turnover rates, legal challenges, and, eventually, a loss of revenue and profits. Employers must acknowledge the significance of mental health in the workplace and give workers with assistance and tools to manage and enhance their mental health, resulting in a more engaged, productive, and loyal workforce that contributes to the organization's success. Employee absenteeism, presenteeism, and work performance may all be severely impacted by mental health. Encourage open communication, provide mental health resources, promote work-life balance, foster a positive work environment, address mental health in employee development, encourage physical activity, regular check-ins, form a wellness committee, review organizational policies and procedures, and lead by example are all strategies to promote mental health in the workplace

Gender diversity especially in engineering field has been an interest in recent years. Studies claimed the benefit reaped with gender diversity is important in terms of growth of an organization such as the statistics from Credit Suisse on the number of women on the board which has shown upward trends on market shares. Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) publication on the career success among engineers in Malaysia has made emphasis on the importance of women participation in the professional field especially among the decision makers. Other critical findings such as the majority of women feel welcome in the oil and gas industry and would encourage other females to join, however, 45% said they do not get the same recognition as men in terms of opportunities. Therefore, this paper attempts to investigate the perception of employees in an Oil and Gas company operating in Malaysia towards gender diversity and its relationship with attributes falling under Organizational Effectiveness by using a mixed method approach where samples selected for quantitative study were engineers from an oil and gas company. The findings indicated that there are positive perceptions from engineers regarding gender diversity, however implementation in the company is still lacking. The gap is identified and a framework is presented as an integrated approach to gender diversity and emphasize that the context could only be achieved if all aspects are carried out strategically in an organization, as a whole

Legal, Institutional and Governance Requirements for Effective Transboundary Biodiversity Conservation

    Get PDF
International border areas contain some of the most biologically intact ecosystems in the world. Due to range shifts induced by climate change more than half the world's species are in need of transboundary management. Without an appropriate management regime for the whole ecological unit, the risk of conflict over the use of the shared resource, or of fragmented and incomplete management is high. The design of legal and institutional arrangements therefore requires particular attention

Does an educational video for aneuploidy screening improve informed choice among pregnant women? A randomised controlled trial

BACKGROUND: Poor knowledge and the lack of deliberation have been cited as reasons for women making uninformed choices about aneuploidy screening. Adequate pre-test counselling is of particular importance where non-invasive prenatal screening (NIPS) is being increasingly offered as a primary screening test. DESIGN: Women attending the antenatal clinic with a singleton pregnancy below 14 weeks were randomised to receive routine counselling or the intervention-a 16-min educational video on aneuploidy screening before their consult. The primary outcome, rate of informed choice, was assessed using an adapted multidimensional measure of informed choice questionnaire, where informed choice was defined as good knowledge and value-consistent behaviour. Secondary outcomes included informed choice with deliberation, decisional conflict and anxiety. RESULTS: Two hundred and eighty-six women were recruited. 69.8% of women in the intervention group made an informed choice compared with 53.6% in the control group (Risk Ratio [RR] 1.30, p = 0.014). A significantly higher number of women in the intervention group had good knowledge compared to controls (81% vs. 60.9%; RR 1.33, p = 0.001). Decisional conflict did not differ between groups, but women in the intervention group had higher anxiety scores (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The study intervention was effective in helping women make informed choice. Qualitative studies to determine the reason for increased anxiety are needed. Linking the effects of helminth infection, diet and the gut microbiota with human whole-blood signatures

    Get PDF
Helminth infection and dietary intake can affect the intestinal microbiota, as well as the immune system. Here we analyzed the relationship between fecal microbiota and blood profiles of indigenous Malaysians, referred to locally as Orang Asli, in comparison to urban participants from the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. We found that helminth infections had a larger effect on gut microbial composition than did dietary intake or blood profiles. Trichuris trichiura infection intensity also had the strongest association with blood transcriptional profiles. By characterizing paired longitudinal samples collected before and after deworming treatment, we determined that changes in serum zinc and iron levels among the Orang Asli were driven by changes in helminth infection status, independent of dietary metal intake. Serum zinc and iron levels were associated with changes in the abundance of several microbial taxa. Hence, there is considerable interplay between helminths, micronutrients and the microbiota on the regulation of immune responses in humans

This article examines and contrasts the performance of small-cap growth and small-cap value funds in the United States. Between May 2016 and May 2022, a total of 139 small-cap growth funds and 97 small-cap value funds were collected via Yahoo Finance. The weekly data was then used to calculate the Treynor ratio, Sharpe ratio, and Jensen alpha. The finding shows that US small-cap value funds appear to be superior to small-cap growth funds. The Sharpe and Treynor ratios demonstrate the higher risk-adjusted performance of small-cap value funds relative to their benchmarks. whereas the Sharpe ratio is the only indicator of outperformance for small-cap growth funds. Regarding the Jensen alpha, value funds possessed positive alphas and outperformed the benchmark. Therefore, the results of this study could aid investors in picking a portfolio with superior risk-adjusted performance
