    Learning Granularity-Unified Representations for Text-to-Image Person Re-identification

    Text-to-image person re-identification (ReID) aims to search for pedestrian images of an interested identity via textual descriptions. It is challenging due to both rich intra-modal variations and significant inter-modal gaps. Existing works usually ignore the difference in feature granularity between the two modalities, i.e., the visual features are usually fine-grained while textual features are coarse, which is mainly responsible for the large inter-modal gaps. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end framework based on transformers to learn granularity-unified representations for both modalities, denoted as LGUR. LGUR framework contains two modules: a Dictionary-based Granularity Alignment (DGA) module and a Prototype-based Granularity Unification (PGU) module. In DGA, in order to align the granularities of two modalities, we introduce a Multi-modality Shared Dictionary (MSD) to reconstruct both visual and textual features. Besides, DGA has two important factors, i.e., the cross-modality guidance and the foreground-centric reconstruction, to facilitate the optimization of MSD. In PGU, we adopt a set of shared and learnable prototypes as the queries to extract diverse and semantically aligned features for both modalities in the granularity-unified feature space, which further promotes the ReID performance. Comprehensive experiments show that our LGUR consistently outperforms state-of-the-arts by large margins on both CUHK-PEDES and ICFG-PEDES datasets.     HAP: Structure-Aware Masked Image Modeling for Human-Centric Perception

    Model pre-training is essential in human-centric perception. In this paper, we first introduce masked image modeling (MIM) as a pre-training approach for this task. Upon revisiting the MIM training strategy, we reveal that human structure priors offer significant potential. Motivated by this insight, we further incorporate an intuitive human structure prior - human parts - into pre-training. Specifically, we employ this prior to guide the mask sampling process. Image patches, corresponding to human part regions, have high priority to be masked out. This encourages the model to concentrate more on body structure information during pre-training, yielding substantial benefits across a range of human-centric perception tasks. To further capture human characteristics, we propose a structure-invariant alignment loss that enforces different masked views, guided by the human part prior, to be closely aligned for the same image. We term the entire method as HAP. HAP simply uses a plain ViT as the encoder yet establishes new state-of-the-art performance on 11 human-centric benchmarks, and on-par result on one dataset. For example, HAP achieves 78.1% mAP on MSMT17 for person re-identification, 86.54% mA on PA-100K for pedestrian attribute recognition, 78.2% AP on MS COCO for 2D pose estimation, and 56.0 PA-MPJPE on 3DPW for 3D pose and shape estimation.Comment: Accepted by NeurIPS 202

    Co-Design Based Lateral Motion Control of All-Wheel-Independent-Drive Electric Vehicles with Network Congestion

    All-wheel-independent-drive electric vehicles (AWID-EVs) have considerable advantages in terms of energy optimization, drivability and driving safety due to the remarkable actuation flexibility of electric motors. However, in their current implementations, various real-time data in the vehicle control system are exchanged via a controller area network (CAN), which causes network congestion and network-induced delays. These problems could lead to systemic instability and make the system integration difficult. The goal of this paper is to provide a design methodology that can cope with all these challenges for the lateral motion control of AWID-EVs. Firstly, a continuous-time model of an AWID-EV is derived. Then an expression for determining upper and lower bounds on the delays caused by CAN is presented and with which a discrete-time model of the closed-loop CAN system is derived. An expression on the bandwidth utilization is introduced as well. Thirdly, a co-design based scheme combining a period-dependent linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and a dynamic period scheduler is designed for the resulting model and the stability criterion is also derived. The results of simulations and hard-in-loop (HIL) experiments show that the proposed methodology can effectively guarantee the stability of the vehicle lateral motion control while obviously declining the network congestion

    A New Approach to Calculate the Shielding Factor of Magnetic Shields Comprising Nonlinear Ferromagnetic Materials under Arbitrary Disturbances

    To enable the realization of ultra-low magnetic fields for scientific and technological research, magnetic shielding is required to create a space with low residual magnetic field and high shielding factors. The shielding factors of magnetic shields are due to nonlinear material properties, the geometry and structure of the shields, and the external magnetic fields. Magnetic shielding is used in environments full of random realistic disturbances, resulting in an arbitrary and random external magnetic field, and in this case, the shielding effect is hard to define simply by the shielding factors. A new method to simulate and predict a dynamic internal space magnetic field wave is proposed based on the Finite Element method (FEM) combined with the Jiles-Atherton (JA) model. By simulating the hysteresis behavior of the magnetic shields and establishing a dynamic model, the new method can simulate dynamic magnetic field changes inside magnetic shields as long as the external disturbances are known. The shielding factors under an AC external field with a sine wave and certain frequencies are calculated to validate the feasibility of the new method. A real-time wave of internal magnetic flux density under an AC triangular wave external field is simulated directly with the new method versus a method that splits the triangular wave into several sine waves by a Fourier transform, divides the shielding factors, and then adds the quotients together. Moreover, real-time internal waves under some arbitrary fields are measured. Experimental internal magnetic flux density waves of a 4-layer magnetically shielded room (MSR) at the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) fit the simulated results well, taking experimental errors into account

    Speed Synchronization Control of Integrated Motor–Transmission Powertrain over CAN through Active Period-Scheduling Approach

    This paper deals with the speed synchronization control of integrated motor–transmission (IMT) powertrain systems in pure electric vehicles (EVs) over a controller area network (CAN) subject to both network-induced delays and network congestion. A CAN has advantages over point-to-point communication; however, it imposes network-induced delays and network congestion into the control system, which can deteriorate the shifting quality and make system integration difficult. This paper presents a co-design scheme combining active period scheduling and discrete-time slip mode control (SMC) to deal with both network-induced delays and network congestion of the CAN, which improves the speed synchronization control for high shifting quality and prevents network congestion for the system’s integration. The results of simulations and hardware-in-loop experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, which can ensure satisfactory speed synchronization performance while significantly reducing the network’s utilization

    Hice1, a Novel Microtubule-Associated Protein Required for Maintenance of Spindle Integrity and Chromosomal Stability in Human Cells▿ †

    Spindle integrity is critical for efficient mitotic progression and accurate chromosome segregation. Deregulation of spindles often leads to structural and functional aberrations, ultimately promoting segregation errors and aneuploidy, a hallmark of most human cancers. Here we report the characterization of a previously identified human sarcoma antigen (gene located at 19p13.11), Hice1, an evolutionarily nonconserved 46-kDa coiled-coil protein. Hice1 shows distinct cytoplasmic localization and associates with interphase centrosomes and mitotic spindles, preferentially at the spindle pole vicinity. Depletion of Hice1 by RNA interference resulted in abnormal and unstable spindle configurations, mitotic delay at prometaphase and metaphase, and elevated aneuploidy. Conversely, loss of Hice1 had minimal effects on interphase centrosome duplication. We also found that both full-length Hice1 and Hice1-N1, which is composed of 149 amino acids of the N-terminal region, but not the mutant lacking the N-terminal region, exhibited activities of microtubule bundling and stabilization at a near-physiological concentration. Consistently, overexpression of Hice1 rendered microtubule bundles in cells resistant to nocodazole- or cold-treatment-induced depolymerization. These results demonstrate that Hice1 is a novel microtubule-associated protein important for maintaining spindle integrity and chromosomal stability, in part by virtue of its ability to bind, bundle, and stabilize microtubules
