Optimal Embedding of Functions for In-Network Computation: Complexity Analysis and Algorithms
We consider optimal distributed computation of a given function of
distributed data. The input (data) nodes and the sink node that receives the
function form a connected network that is described by an undirected weighted
network graph. The algorithm to compute the given function is described by a
weighted directed acyclic graph and is called the computation graph. An
embedding defines the computation communication sequence that obtains the
function at the sink. Two kinds of optimal embeddings are sought, the embedding
that---(1)~minimizes delay in obtaining function at sink, and (2)~minimizes
cost of one instance of computation of function. This abstraction is motivated
by three applications---in-network computation over sensor networks, operator
placement in distributed databases, and module placement in distributed
computing.
We first show that obtaining minimum-delay and minimum-cost embeddings are
both NP-complete problems and that cost minimization is actually MAX SNP-hard.
Next, we consider specific forms of the computation graph for which polynomial
time solutions are possible. When the computation graph is a tree, a polynomial
time algorithm to obtain the minimum delay embedding is described. Next, for
the case when the function is described by a layered graph we describe an
algorithm that obtains the minimum cost embedding in polynomial time. This
algorithm can also be used to obtain an approximation for delay minimization.
We then consider bounded treewidth computation graphs and give an algorithm to
obtain the minimum cost embedding in polynomial time

SERVIR Science Applications for Capacity Building
SERVIR is a regional visualization and monitoring system using Earth observations to support environmental management, climate adaptation, and disaster response in developing countries. SERVIR is jointly sponsored by NASA and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). SERVIR has been instrumental in development of science applications to support the decision-making and capacity building in the developing countries with the help of SERVIR Hubs. In 2011, NASA Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES) included a call for proposals to form SERVIR Applied Sciences Team (SERVIR AST) under Applied Sciences Capacity Building Program. Eleven proposals were selected, the Principal Investigators of which comprise the core of the SERVIR AST. The expertise on the Team span several societal benefit areas including agriculture, disasters, public health and air quality, water, climate and terrestrial carbon assessments. This presentation will cover the existing SERVIR science applications, capacity building components, overview of SERVIR AST projects, and anticipated impacts
Dysfunction of Organic Anion Transporting Polypeptide 1a1 Alters Intestinal Bacteria and Bile Acid Metabolism in Mice
Organic anion transporting polypeptide 1a1 (Oatp1a1) is predominantly expressed in liver and is able to transport bile acids (BAs) in vitro. Male Oatp1a1-null mice have increased concentrations of taurodeoxycholic acid (TDCA), a secondary BA generated by intestinal bacteria, in both serum and livers. Therefore, in the present study, BA concentrations and intestinal bacteria in wild-type (WT) and Oatp1a1-null mice were quantified to investigate whether the increase of secondary BAs in Oatp1a1-null mice is due to alterations in intestinal bacteria. The data demonstrate that Oatp1a1-null mice : (1) have similar bile flow and BA concentrations in bile as WT mice; (2) have a markedly different BA composition in the intestinal contents, with a decrease in conjugated BAs and an increase in unconjugated BAs; (3) have BAs in the feces that are more deconjugated, desulfated, 7-dehydroxylated, 3-epimerized, and oxidized, but less 7-epimerized; (4) have 10-fold more bacteria in the small intestine, and 2-fold more bacteria in the large intestine which is majorly due to a 200% increase in Bacteroides and a 30% reduction in Firmicutes; and (5) have a different urinary excretion of bacteria-related metabolites than WT mice. In conclusion, the present study for the first time established that lack of a liver transporter (Oatp1a1) markedly alters the intestinal environment in mice, namely the bacteria composition

There is no evidence that this rapid economic growth translates into a decline in malnutrition of children in Asian countries such as India
Churn Prediction using MapReduce and HBase.
The mobile telecommunication market is rapidly increasing with numerous service providers stepping in the market. This makes the customer think to leave the service provided by one service provider and move to another service provider for some better offers. This project is an attempt to design and implement an application that can take Customer Records as input and give Customer churn prediction details as output. It will enable service provider to know in advance about the valuable customer who are about to churn. By merely giving customer data records as input, user can get the desired customer behaviour pattern, which is the churn output. The output obtained will basically distinguish the churners and the non-churners. The system is built using Apache Hadoop, Apache HBase and a Data Mining Algorithm under MapReduce code. The use of Hadoop framework makes it easy to process the large datasets containing the information of customers.

A Role for Health Communication in the Continuum of HIV Care, Treatment, and Prevention
Health communication has played a pivotal role in HIV prevention efforts since the beginning of the epidemic. The recent paradigm of combination prevention, which integrates behavioral, biomedical, and structural interventions, offers new opportunities for employing health communication approaches across the entire continuum of care. We describe key areas where health communication can significantly enhance HIV treatment, care, and prevention, presenting evidence from interventions that include health communication components. These interventions rely primarily on interpersonal communication, especially individual and group counseling, both within and beyond clinical settings to enhance the uptake of and continued engagement in care. Many successful interventions mobilize a network of trained community supporters or accompagnateurs, who provide education, counseling, psychosocial support, treatment supervision, and other pragmatic assistance across the care continuum. Community treatment supporters reduce the burden on overworked medical providers, engage a wider segment of the community, and offer a more sustainable model for supporting people living with HIV. Additionally, mobile technologies are increasingly seen as promising avenues for ongoing cost-effective communication throughout the treatment cascade. A broader range of communication approaches, traditionally employed in HIV prevention efforts, that address community and sociopolitical levels through mass media, school- or workplace-based education, and entertainment modalities may be useful to interventions seeking to address the full care continuum. Future interventions would benefit from development of a framework that maps appropriate communication theories and approaches onto each step of the care continuum to evaluate the efficacy of communication components on treatment outcomes
