Modulated phases and devil's staircases in a layered mean-field version of the ANNNI model

We investigate the phase diagram of a spin-$1/2$ Ising model on a cubic lattice, with competing interactions between nearest and next-nearest neighbors along an axial direction, and fully connected spins on the sites of each perpendicular layer. The problem is formulated in terms of a set of noninteracting Ising chains in a position-dependent field. At low temperatures, as in the standard mean-feild version of the Axial-Next-Nearest-Neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model, there are many distinct spatially commensurate phases that spring from a multiphase point of infinitely degenerate ground states. As temperature increases, we confirm the existence of a branching mechanism associated with the onset of higher-order commensurate phases. We check that the ferromagnetic phase undergoes a first-order transition to the modulated phases. Depending on a parameter of competition, the wave number of the striped patterns locks in rational values, giving rise to a devil's staircase. We numerically calculate the Hausdorff dimension $D_{0}$ associated with these fractal structures, and show that $D_{0}$ increases with temperature but seems to reach a limiting value smaller than $D_{0}=1$.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure

Chemical Potential and the Nature of the Dark Energy: The case of phantom

The influence of a possible non zero chemical potential $\mu$ on the nature of dark energy is investigated by assuming that the dark energy is a relativistic perfect simple fluid obeying the equation of state (EoS), $p=\omega \rho$ ($\omega <0, constant$). The entropy condition, $S \geq 0$, implies that the possible values of $\omega$ are heavily dependent on the magnitude, as well as on the sign of the chemical potential. For $\mu >0$, the $\omega$-parameter must be greater than -1 (vacuum is forbidden) while for $\mu < 0$ not only the vacuum but even a phantomlike behavior ($\omega <-1$) is allowed. In any case, the ratio between the chemical potential and temperature remains constant, that is, $\mu/T=\mu_0/T_0$. Assuming that the dark energy constituents have either a bosonic or fermionic nature, the general form of the spectrum is also proposed. For bosons $\mu$ is always negative and the extended Wien's law allows only a dark component with $\omega < -1/2$ which includes vacuum and the phantomlike cases. The same happens in the fermionic branch for $\mu 0$ are permmited only if $-1 < \omega < -1/2$. The thermodynamics and statistical arguments constrain the EoS parameter to be $\omega < -1/2$, a result surprisingly close to the maximal value required to accelerate a FRW type universe dominated by matter and dark energy ($\omega \lesssim -10/21$).Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

Considerações sobre a agricultura dos índios Waiãpi no Amapá.

O presente trabalho aponta limitações ao desenvolvimento da cultura de subsistência da Comunidade Indígena Waiãpi, no Estado do Amapá, situado na Amazônia oriental brasileira, observadas em viagens exploratórias para avaliar problemas da produção agrícola. Como fator limitante foram detectados principalmente o ataque de brocas em frutos e raízes além de deficiências nutricionais. Foram propostas medidas de controle cultural e biológico, sem agrotóxicos, adequando-as ao modo de vida da comunidade. Detectaram-se introduções de espécies e variedades de plantas e de pragas provavelmente facilitada pela colonização da zona e por ações imprudentes.bitstream/item/70890/1/AP-1997-consideracoes-agricultura-waiapi.pd
