Background/Aim. Chronic echinococcocal disease is the parasite human disease caused by the penetration of larval (asexual) stages of the canine tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus) in the liver of humans. After the penetration of the parasite, the host organism react by activating complement- depending immune response. The aim of this study was to elucidate the influence of larval form of Echinococcus granulosus in the liver on the activity of antioxidative defense enzymes in the blood of patients before and after the surgical intervention. Methods. We investigated the activity of antioxidative defense enzymes: copper/zinc containing superoxide dismutase (CuZn SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) in the blood of patients before and after the surgical intervention in respect to the controls, clinically healthy persons. Results. Our results showed that the activity of the GSH-Px was significantly decreased in the plasma of the patients with echinocococal disease before the surgery in respect to the controls. The activity of GST was significantly higher in the blood of the patients after the surgery in comparison to the controls. Conclusion. Chronic liver echinoccocal disease caused significant changes of some antioxidative defense enzymes, first of all Se-dependent enzyme GSH-Px, which could be a suitabile biomarker in the biochemical evaluation of the disease. This work represents a first comprehensive study of the activity of antioxidative defense enzymes in cronic liver echinococcocosis in the patients before and after the surgical intervention in respect to the clinically healthy persons

This trial aimed to investigate changes in pH, proximate composition and fat rancidity parameters during the production of traditional Sucuk sausage (dry fermented sausage) with different fat levels. Three groups of sausages were produced from beef meat and fat: LF (low fat, with 10% added fat), MF (medium fat, with 20% added fat) and HF (high fat, with 30% added fat). The production was carried out in a traditional smoking house, and fermentation and ripening lasted 28 days. Samples were analysed after stuffing (day 0) and on days 7, 14, 21 and 28 of production. The higher fat content of the HF group probably influenced the lowest pH value at the beginning of production (day 0) (p<0.05). The HF group also had the mildest drop in pH (p<0.05), while the MF and LF groups had a similar trend in pH decline. Fat content had a significant effect on the proximate composition of the products, best reflected at the end of the production process, where the HF group had significantly higher fat and lower moisture and protein content (p<0.05). A higher total free fatty acids (FFA) content was obtained in the LF group, showing greater lipolysis than in MF and HF groups. Interestingly, sausages with higher fat content had lower peroxide values during production (p<0.05)

Environmental noise management in the area of opencast mines

    No full text
Environmental noise constitutes a threat regarding disturbance and deterioration of quality of living. There are numerous sources of environmental noise, among others mine objects, traffic roads etc. In Serbian practice open cast mines are commonly in vicinity of residential areas, which is the case of the Field C open cast coal mine and the Barosevac settlement. More complexity is added to noise management in such conditions through additional noise sources, not directly linked to mine objects and activities, such as local or regional roads. This paper describes an approach to noise management for the purpose of environmental noise impact reduction, from both traffic and industrial sources, related to the project Environmental Improvement Project in Kolubara Mine Basin in Barosevac settlement, as a part of acquisition of new Excavator-belt Conveyor-Stacker (ECS) system

Case study on ventilation method development for Bar-Boljare highway tunnels construction in Montenegro

    No full text
Sometimes tunnel construction is a necessity regardless of its purpose due to many reasons, to mention some of them: limited space, safe operation, environmental protection etc. In those cases, one of the main aspects concerning an appropriate design of a tunnel construction is site ventilation. Ventilation is required during the construction of any tunnel regardless of technology used to construct it. Three major construction ventilation schemes are typically applied. Which one will be use are often in dependency of the site requirements. In this paper is presented case study on ventilation method development for the highway tunnels construction and it includes ventilation solutions for tunnels ā€˜Sukaā€™, ā€˜VežeÅ”nikā€™, ā€˜Mrkeā€™ and ā€˜Vjeternikā€™ during construction phase. The tunnels are part of the Bar-Boljare highway which is also a part of the Trans-European Highway (THE) through the Republic of Montenegro

Clinical and morphological features of ovarian pure dysgerminoma: a report of a 14 years old girl

    No full text
Dysgerminoma is best known as the ovarian counterpart of seminoma of the testis Relatively uncommon tumors, dysgerminomas account for less than 2% of all ovarian cancer. We report a case of a 14 years old girl with a large and rapidly growing unilaleral ovarian dysgerminoma. Examination of the surgical specimen showed a tumor of 27x17x8 cm in size and 4800 gr. in weight. It was oval in shape with a slightly glistening fibrous capsule, soft but solid and hemorrhagic. The mass arose from the right ovary and did not invade any surrounding structures. The tumor and the ovary were torqued with its fallopian tube. Microscopic examination showed typical characteristics of ovarian dysgerminoma, with a micrometastasis in the omentum (in the vicinity of the tumor). The patient underwent a right salpingo-oophorectomy, had an uncomplicated postoperative course and received radio and chemotherapy Thirty months after the operation, the patient is in good health and with normal ultrasound and laboratory results. We believe that conservative surgery followed by adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy seems to be ideal treatment in case of pure ovarian dysgerminoma when careful surgical staging confirmed the unilaterality of disease
