    Energy in the form of fuel and electricity has an important role in achieving socio-economic and environmental goals. Energy in Indonesia currently still focuses on fossil-based energy (petroleum, natural gas, and coal). Ocean waves have the potential for alternative energy that can be used for power generation due to the existence of Indonesia as a maritime area. This study aims to determine the characteristics of water waves on a linear permanent magnet generator in converting wave energy into electrical energy. The research method used is experiment and simulation of wave generator with linear permanent magnet generator as the object of research. The wave characteristics data taken are wave height, wave period, wavelength, wave amplitude, wave frequency, and wave propagation speed. The results of data analysis obtained are the performance of a linear permanent magnet generator including wave generation power, generator output power, and efficiency. The results of the study found the influence of wave interference due to reflection (reflection) which causes an increase in wave height. The generator has optimal performance at a wave height of 7.87cm with a wave generation power of 1.053 watts, a generator output power of 0.0563 watts, and an efficiency value of 4.63%.  Keywords: Alternative energy, linier permanent magnet generator, wave characteristics
