Placing Arrows in Directed Graph Drawings
We consider the problem of placing arrow heads in directed graph drawings
without them overlapping other drawn objects. This gives drawings where edge
directions can be deduced unambiguously. We show hardness of the problem,

Envelope Determinants of Equine Lentiviral Vaccine Protection
Lentiviral envelope (Env) antigenic variation and associated immune evasion present major obstacles to vaccine development. The concept that Env is a critical determinant for vaccine efficacy is well accepted, however defined correlates of protection associated with Env variation have yet to be determined. We reported an attenuated equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) vaccine study that directly examined the effect of lentiviral Env sequence variation on vaccine efficacy. The study identified a significant, inverse, linear correlation between vaccine efficacy and increasing divergence of the challenge virus Env gp90 protein compared to the vaccine virus gp90. The report demonstrated approximately 100% protection of immunized ponies from disease after challenge by virus with a homologous gp90 (EV0), and roughly 40% protection against challenge by virus (EV13) with a gp90 13% divergent from the vaccine strain. In the current study we examine whether the protection observed when challenging with the EV0 strain could be conferred to animals via chimeric challenge viruses between the EV0 and EV13 strains, allowing for mapping of protection to specific Env sequences. Viruses containing the EV13 proviral backbone and selected domains of the EV0 gp90 were constructed and in vitro and in vivo infectivity examined. Vaccine efficacy studies indicated that homology between the vaccine strain gp90 and the N-terminus of the challenge strain gp90 was capable of inducing immunity that resulted in significantly lower levels of post-challenge virus and significantly delayed the onset of disease. However, a homologous N-terminal region alone inserted in the EV13 backbone could not impart the 100% protection observed with the EV0 strain. Data presented here denote the complicated and potentially contradictory relationship between in vitro virulence and in vivo pathogenicity. The study highlights the importance of structural conformation for immunogens and emphasizes the need for antibody binding, not neutralizing, assays that correlate with vaccine protection. © 2013 Craigo et al
Oxide Heterostructures from a Realistic Many-Body Perspective
Oxide heterostructures are a new class of materials by design, that open the
possibility for engineering challenging electronic properties, in particular
correlation effects beyond an effective single-particle description. This short
review tries to highlight some of the demanding aspects and questions,
motivated by the goal to describe the encountered physics from first
principles. The state-of-the-art methodology to approach realistic many-body
effects in strongly correlated oxides, the combination of density functional
theory with dynamical mean-field theory, will be briefly introduced. Discussed
examples deal with prominent Mott-band- and band-band-insulating type of oxide
heterostructures, where different electronic characteristics may be stabilized

Dynamical Mean-Field Theory
The dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) is a widely applicable approximation
scheme for the investigation of correlated quantum many-particle systems on a
lattice, e.g., electrons in solids and cold atoms in optical lattices. In
particular, the combination of the DMFT with conventional methods for the
calculation of electronic band structures has led to a powerful numerical
approach which allows one to explore the properties of correlated materials. In
this introductory article we discuss the foundations of the DMFT, derive the
underlying self-consistency equations, and present several applications which

Why is Behavioral Game a Game for Economists? : The concept of beliefs in equilibrium
The interdisciplinary exchange between economists and psychologists has so far been more active and fruitful in the modifications of Expected Utility Theory than in those of Game Theory. We argue that this asymmetry may be explained by economists' specific way of doing equilibrium analysis of aggregate-level outcomes in their practice, and by psychologists' reluctance to fully engage with such practice. We focus on the notion of belief that is embedded in economists' practice of equilibrium analysis, more specifically Nash equilibrium, and argue that its difference from the psychological counterpart is one of the factors that makes interdisciplinary exchange in behavioral game theory more difficult.Peer reviewe
Endogenous cholinergic inputs and local circuit mechanisms govern the phasic mesolimbic dopamine response to nicotine
Nicotine exerts its reinforcing action by stimulating nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) and boosting dopamine (DA) output from the ventral tegmental area (VTA). Recent data have led to a debate about the principal pathway of nicotine action: direct stimulation of the DAergic cells through nAChR activation, or disinhibition mediated through desensitization of nAChRs on GABAergic interneurons. We use a computational model of the VTA circuitry and nAChR function to shed light on this issue. Our model illustrates that the α4β2-containing nAChRs either on DA or GABA cells can mediate the acute effects of nicotine. We account for in vitro as well as in vivo data, and predict the conditions necessary for either direct stimulation or disinhibition to be at the origin of DA activity increases. We propose key experiments to disentangle the contribution of both mechanisms. We show that the rate of endogenous acetylcholine input crucially determines the evoked DA response for both mechanisms. Together our results delineate the mechanisms by which the VTA mediates the acute rewarding properties of nicotine and suggest an acetylcholine dependence hypothesis for nicotine reinforcement.Peer reviewe
