    We use LAMMPS to randomly pack hard spheres to simulate the heat exchanger, where the hard spheres represent sintered metal particles in the heat exchanger. We simulated the heat exchanger under different sphere radii and different packing fractions of the metal particle and researched pore space.     Novel biodegradable sandwich-structured nanofibrous drug-eluting membranes for repair of infected wounds: an in vitro and in vivo study

They were electrospun into sandwich-structured membranes with PLGA/collagen as the surface layers and PLGA/drugs as the core. An elution method and a high-pressure liquid chromatography assay were used to characterize in vivo and in vitro drug release from the membranes. In addition, repair of infected wounds in rats was studied. Histological examination of epithelialization and granulation at the wound site was also performed.Results: The biodegradable nanofibrous membranes released large amounts of vancomycin and gentamicin (well above the minimum inhibition concentration) and lidocaine in vivo for more than 3 weeks. A bacterial inhibition test was carried out to determine the relative activity of the antibiotics released. The bioactivity ranged from 40% to 100%. The nanofibrous membranes were functionally active in treating infected wounds, and were very effective as accelerators in early-stage wound healing.Conclusion: Using the electrospinning technique, we will be able to manufacture biodegradable, biomimetic, nanofibrous, extracellular membranes for long-term delivery of various drugs.Keywords: nanofibrous, sandwich-structured, drug-eluting membranes, electrospinning, release characteristics, repair, wound infectio

    Health monitoring of joint conditions in steel truss bridges with relative displacement sensors

    This paper investigates the feasibility and effectiveness of using a recently developed relative displacement sensor for the structural health monitoring of joint conditions in steel truss bridges. The developed relative displacement sensor is an innovative design offering some advantages and unique features, and is a much easier and economical method for structural health monitoring due to the simplicity of its direct measurement of relative displacement without the requirement for a stable reference point. To investigate the performance of applying the developed relative displacement sensors for structural joint condition monitoring, a steel truss bridge model is fabricated in the laboratory and installed with the relative displacement sensors to detect the health conditions of joint connections. The dynamic relative displacement measurements are analyzed with a time-frequency analysis method, i.e. continuous wavelet transform, which is a well-practiced signal processing technique to identify the structural condition change, namely the loosen bolt damage in the joint connection of steel truss bridges under ambient vibrations. The sensitivity range of the developed sensor is also investigated to see how sensitive the sensor is to identify the local bolt damage. Relative displacement measurements of the steel truss bridge models under free vibration tests from both undamaged and damaged states are also analyzed, and a damage index based on the change in the percentages of a specific wavelet packet component to the total wavelet packet energy between the undamaged and damaged states is used to detect the existence of the loosen bolt damage in steel truss bridges. Experimental studies demonstrate that the developed relative displacement sensor has a sensitive performance to identify and assess the joint conditions in steel truss bridges

    Astrocyte elevated gene-1 (AEG-1) is a marker for aggressive salivary gland carcinoma

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Astrocyte elevated gene-1 (AEG-1) is associated with tumorigenesis and progression in diverse human cancers. The present study was aimed to investigate the clinical and prognostic significance of AEG-1 in salivary gland carcinomas (SGC).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Real-time PCR and western blot analyses were employed to examine AEG-1 expression in two normal salivary gland tissues, eight SGC tissues of various clinical stages, and five pairs of primary SGC and adjacent salivary gland tissues from the same patient. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed to examine AEG-1 protein expression in paraffin-embedded tissues from 141 SGC patients. Statistical analyses was applies to evaluate the diagnostic value and associations of AEG-1 expression with clinical parameters.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>AEG-1 expression was evidently up-regulated in SGC tissues compared with that in the normal salivary gland tissues and in matched adjacent salivary gland tissues. AEG-1 protein level was positively correlated with clinical stage (<it>P </it>< 0.001), T classification (<it>P </it>= 0.008), N classification (<it>P </it>= 0.008) and M classifications (<it>P </it>= 0.006). Patients with higher AEG-1 expression had shorter overall survival time, whereas those with lower tumor AEG-1 expression had longer survival time.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results suggest that AEG-1 expression is associated with SGC progression and may represent a novel and valuable predictor for prognostic evaluation of SGC patients.</p
