Spatial distribution characteristics of splashing rainfall caused by nappe flow impingement on a plunge pool
Splashing is the main atomization source for a jet impinging on a liquid layer. Increased understanding of splashing rainfall characteristics can help to reduce the hazard of flood discharge atomization in hydraulic engineering. In this study, the spatial distribution of splashing rainfall caused by a nappe flow impinging on a downstream water cushion was experimentally investigated. Effects of the main hydraulic factors of impingement velocity, unit discharge, and water-cushion depth on splashing were investigated. The shape of splashing rainfall contours was approximately elliptical in horizontal planes. Maximum rainfall intensity was in the surrounding impingement region, and rainfall intensity decreased with an increase in the distance between the impingement center point and measurement points. Splashing rainfall intensity increased with increases in impingement velocity and unit discharge, whereas the opposite was observed with an increase in plunge pool depth. A gamma distribution described rainfall intensity distribution in the longitudinal and vertical direction, whereas a Gaussian distribution described intensity in the transverse direction. A series of empirical relations were proposed
A Structure Design Method for Reduction of MRI Acoustic Noise
The acoustic problem of the split gradient coil is one challenge in a Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Linear Accelerator (MRI-LINAC) system. In this paper, we aimed to develop a scheme to reduce the acoustic noise of the split gradient coil. First, a split gradient assembly with an asymmetric configuration was designed to avoid vibration in same resonant modes for the two assembly cylinders. Next, the outer ends of the split main magnet were constructed using horn structures, which can distribute the acoustic field away from patient region. Finally, a finite element method (FEM) was used to quantitatively evaluate the effectiveness of the above acoustic noise reduction scheme. Simulation results found that the noise could be maximally reduced by 6.9 dB and 5.6 dB inside and outside the central gap of the split MRI system, respectively, by increasing the length of one gradient assembly cylinder by 20 cm. The optimized horn length was observed to be 55 cm, which could reduce noise by up to 7.4 dB and 5.4 dB inside and outside the central gap, respectively. The proposed design could effectively reduce the acoustic noise without any influence on the application of other noise reduction methods
Coexistence of multiuser entanglement distribution and classical light in optical fiber network with a semiconductor chip
Building communication links among multiple users in a scalable and robust
way is a key objective in achieving large-scale quantum networks. In realistic
scenario, noise from the coexisting classical light is inevitable and can
ultimately disrupt the entanglement. The previous significant fully connected
multiuser entanglement distribution experiments are conducted using dark fiber
links and there is no explicit relation between the entanglement degradations
induced by classical noise and its error rate. Here we fabricate a
semiconductor chip with a high figure-of-merit modal overlap to directly
generate broadband polarization entanglement. Our monolithic source maintains
polarization entanglement fidelity above 96% for 42 nm bandwidth with a
brightness of 1.2*10^7 Hz/mW. We perform a continuously working quantum
entanglement distribution among three users coexisting with classical light.
Under finite-key analysis, we establish secure keys and enable images
encryption as well as quantum secret sharing between users. Our work paves the
way for practical multiparty quantum communication with integrated photonic
architecture compatible with real-world fiber optical communication network
Seizing the window of opportunity to mitigate the impact of climate change on the health of Chinese residents
The health threats posed by climate change in China are increasing rapidly. Each province faces different health risks. Without a timely and adequate response, climate change will impact lives and livelihoods at an accelerated rate and even prevent the achievement of the Healthy and Beautiful China initiatives. The 2021 China Report of the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change is the first annual update of China’s Report of the Lancet Countdown. It comprehensively assesses the impact of climate change on the health of Chinese households and the measures China has taken. Invited by the Lancet committee, Tsinghua University led the writing of the report and cooperated with 25 relevant institutions in and outside of China. The report includes 25 indicators within five major areas (climate change impacts, exposures, and vulnerability; adaptation, planning, and resilience for health; mitigation actions and health co-benefits; economics and finance; and public and political engagement) and a policy brief. This 2021 China policy brief contains the most urgent and relevant indicators focusing on provincial data: The increasing health risks of climate change in China; mixed progress in responding to climate change. In 2020, the heatwave exposures per person in China increased by 4.51 d compared with the 1986–2005 average, resulting in an estimated 92% increase in heatwave-related deaths. The resulting economic cost of the estimated 14500 heatwave-related deaths in 2020 is US$176 million. Increased temperatures also caused a potential 31.5 billion h in lost work time in 2020, which is equivalent to 1.3% of the work hours of the total national workforce, with resulting economic losses estimated at 1.4% of China’s annual gross domestic product. For adaptation efforts, there has been steady progress in local adaptation planning and assessment in 2020, urban green space growth in 2020, and health emergency management in 2019. 12 of 30 provinces reported that they have completed, or were developing, provincial health adaptation plans. Urban green space, which is an important heat adaptation measure, has increased in 18 of 31 provinces in the past decade, and the capacity of China’s health emergency management increased in almost all provinces from 2018 to 2019. As a result of China’s persistent efforts to clean its energy structure and control air pollution, the premature deaths due to exposure to ambient particulate matter of 2.5 μm or less (PM2.5) and the resulting costs continue to decline. However, 98% of China’s cities still have annual average PM2.5 concentrations that are more than the WHO guideline standard of 10 μg/m3. It provides policymakers and the public with up-to-date information on China’s response to climate change and improvements in health outcomes and makes the following policy recommendations. (1) Promote systematic thinking in the related departments and strengthen multi-departmental cooperation. Sectors related to climate and development in China should incorporate health perspectives into their policymaking and actions, demonstrating WHO’s and President Xi Jinping’s so-called health-in-all-policies principle. (2) Include clear goals and timelines for climate-related health impact assessments and health adaptation plans at both the national and the regional levels in the National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for 2035. (3) Strengthen China’s climate mitigation actions and ensure that health is included in China’s pathway to carbon neutrality. By promoting investments in zero-carbon technologies and reducing fossil fuel subsidies, the current rebounding trend in carbon emissions will be reversed and lead to a healthy, low-carbon future. (4) Increase awareness of the linkages between climate change and health at all levels. Health professionals, the academic community, and traditional and new media should raise the awareness of the public and policymakers on the important linkages between climate change and health.</p
Search for light dark matter from atmosphere in PandaX-4T
We report a search for light dark matter produced through the cascading decay
of mesons, which are created as a result of inelastic collisions between
cosmic rays and Earth's atmosphere. We introduce a new and general framework,
publicly accessible, designed to address boosted dark matter specifically, with
which a full and dedicated simulation including both elastic and quasi-elastic
processes of Earth attenuation effect on the dark matter particles arriving at
the detector is performed. In the PandaX-4T commissioning data of 0.63
tonneyear exposure, no significant excess over background is observed.
The first constraints on the interaction between light dark matter generated in
the atmosphere and nucleus through a light scalar mediator are obtained. The
lowest excluded cross-section is set at for
dark matter mass of MeV and mediator mass of 300 MeV. The
lowest upper limit of to dark matter decay branching ratio is
Hyperconjugated side chained benzodithiophene and 4,7-di-2-thienyl-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole based polymer for solar cells
A novel donor-acceptor (D-A) copolymer (P3TBDTDTBT), including hyperconjugated side chained benzodithiophene as a donor and 4,7-di-2-thienyl-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (DTBT) as an acceptor, was designed and synthesized. Due to the introduction of the hyperconjugated side chain, the resultant polymer exhibited good thermal stability with a high decomposition temperature of 437 degrees C, a low band-gap of 1.67 eV with an absorption onset of 742 nm in the solid film, and a deep highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level of -5.26 eV. Finally, the polymer solar cell (PSC) device based on this polymer and [6,6]-phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) showed the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.57% with an open-circuit voltage (V-oc) of 0.78 V, a short-circuit current density (J(sc)) of 8.83 mA cm(-2) and a fill factor (FF) of 53%
A Review on the Use of Microalgae for Sustainable Aquaculture
Traditional aquaculture provides food for humans, but produces a large amount of wastewater, threatening global sustainability. The antibiotics abuse and the water replacement or treatment causes safety problems and increases the aquaculture cost. To overcome environmental and economic problems in the aquaculture industry, a lot of efforts have been devoted into the application of microalgae for wastewater remediation, biomass production, and water quality control. In this review, the systematic description of the technologies required for microalgae-assisted aquaculture and the recent progress were discussed. It deeply reviews the problems caused by the discharge of aquaculture wastewater and introduces the principles of microalgae-assisted aquaculture. Some interesting aspects, including nutrients assimilation mechanisms, algae cultivation systems (raceway pond and revolving algal biofilm), wastewater pretreatment, algal-bacterial cooperation, harvesting technologies (fungi-assisted harvesting and flotation), selection of algal species, and exploitation of value-added microalgae as aquaculture feed, were reviewed in this work. In view of the limitations of recent studies, to further reduce the negative effects of aquaculture wastewater on global sustainability, the future directions of microalgae-assisted aquaculture for industrial applications were suggested
