The Wess-Zumino term and quantum tunneling

    Get PDF
The significance of the Wess--Zumino term in spin tunneling is explored, and a formula is established for the splitting of energy levels of a particle with large fermionic spin as an applied magnetic field is switched on.Comment: Latex, 7 page

Superconducting proximity effect and Majorana fermions at the surface of a topological insulator

    Get PDF
We study the proximity effect between an s-wave superconductor and the surface states of a strong topological insulator. The resulting two dimensional state resembles a spinless p_x+ip_y superconductor, but does not break time reversal symmetry. This state supports Majorana bound states at vortices. We show that linear junctions between superconductors mediated by the topological insulator form a non chiral 1 dimensional wire for Majorana fermions, and that circuits formed from these junctions provide a method for creating, manipulating and fusing Majorana bound states.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, published versio

Post-Baccalaureate Wage Growth within Four Years of Graduation: The Effects of College Quality and College Major

    Get PDF
This paper examines the impact of college quality and academic major on the earnings of a nationally representative sample of baccalaureate recipients. We extend previous work in this area by analyzing the magnitude of change in the influence of these factors at two points in the early career of these graduates. Our results demonstrate that, despite significant variation, graduates from higher quality colleges enjoy a greater rate of growth in earnings during their early career. We also show that growth in earnings varies significantly by the graduates’ major field of study. Wage growth for women and racial minorities is also examined

Visualization of Dimensional Effects in Collective Excitations of Optically Trapped Quasi-Two-Dimensional Bose Gases

We analyze the macroscopic dynamics of a Bose gas axially confined in an optical lattice with a superimposed harmonic trap, taking into account weak tunneling effect. Our results show that upon transition to the quasi-two-dimensional (2D) regime of the trapped gas, the 3D equation of state and equilibrium density profile acquire corrections from 2D many-body effects. The corresponding frequency shift in the transverse breathing mode is accessible within current facilities, suggesting a direct observation of dimensional effects. Comparisons with other relevant effects are also presented.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

A method for accurate electron-atom resonances: The complex-scaled multiconfigurational spin-tensor electron propagator method for the ^2P\, \mbox{Be}^{-} shape resonance problem

We propose and develop the complex scaled multiconfigurational spin-tensor electron propagator (CMCSTEP) technique for theoretical determination of resonance parameters with electron-atom/molecule systems including open-shell and highly correlated atoms and molecules. The multiconfigurational spin-tensor electron propagator method (MCSTEP) developed and implemented by Yeager his coworkers in real space gives very accurate and reliable ionization potentials and attachment energies. The CMCSTEP method uses a complex scaled multiconfigurational self-consistent field (CMCSCF) state as an initial state along with a dilated Hamiltonian where all of the electronic coordinates are scaled by a complex factor. CMCSCF was developed and applied successfully to resonance problems earlier. We apply the CMCSTEP method to get ^2 P\,\mbox{Be}^{-} shape resonance parameters using 14s11p5d14s11p5d, 14s14p2d14s14p2d, and 14s14p5d14s14p5d basis sets with a 2s2p3d2s2p3d\,CAS. The obtained value of the resonance parameters are compared to previous results. This is the first time CMCSTEP has been developed and used for a resonance problem. It will be among the most accurate and reliable techniques. Vertical ionization potentials and attachment energies in real space are typically within ±0.2 eV\pm 0.2\,eV or better of excellent experiments and full configuration interaction calculations with a good basis set. We expect the same sort of agreement in complex space.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figue
