University lecturersâ construction of the âidealâ undergraduate student
Research on the âidealâ or âgoodâ student tends to be situated within compulsory schooling. Few recent studies have focused on lecturersâ conceptualisation and construction of the âidealâ university student. Informed by 30 in-depth interviews with lecturers from two post-92 English universities within the social sciences, we explore how the notion of âidealâ student is understood in contemporary higher education. We focus on lecturersâ expectations of undergraduate students, as well as their views of the âidealâ student in different teaching and learning contexts. We identified specific personal and academic skillsets that are desirable of students, including preparation, engagement, commitment, as well as being critical, reflective and progressing. The ability to achieve high grades, interestingly, is rarely mentioned as important. Implications for policy and practice are discussed as we present a much-needed update on the current features of the âidealâ university student, which can influence student experience, especially the lecturer-student relationship

The evaluation of pilots performance and mental workload by eye movement
Pilots make important decisions often using ambiguous information, while under stresses and with very little time. During flight operations detecting the warning light of system failure is a task with real-world application relates to measurement of pilot's performance and eye movement. The demand for a pilotâs visual and situational awareness in multiple tasks can be detrimental during pilotsâ mental overload conditions. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the relationship between pilotâs mental workload and operational performance by eye tracking. Collecting eye movement data during flight operations in a virtual reality of flight simulator provided useful information to analysis participantsâ cognitive processes. There were 36 pilots participated in this research, the experience of flight hours between 320 and 2,920, the range of age between 26 and 51 years old. The apparatus included Applied Science Laboratories (ASL) eye tracking, IDF flight simulator and NASA_TLX for data collection. The results show that pilots with high SA detecting hydraulic malfunction have shorter total fixation duration on Air Speed Indicator and longer total fixation duration on Altitude Indicator, Vertical Speed Indicator, Right multi-display and Left multi-display compared with pilots without detecting the signal of hydraulic malfunction. Pilotsâ total fixation time on Integration Control Panel, Altitude Indicator, Attitude Indicator and Right Multi-display, and pilotsâ subjective rating on NASA-TLX effort dimension for the mission of close pattern have significant relationship with pilotsâ performance on the operational time for completing the tactic mission. Experienced pilots operate aircraft familiar with monitoring Airspeed Indicator and kinetic maneuvering result in less fuel consumption. This study could provide guidelines for future training design to reduce pilots mental workload and improve situational awareness for enhancing flight safety
Understand How Children Cope with the Diagnosis and Treatment of Cancer: An Important Step to Implement Appropriate Psychological Interventions
Poster Presentation (Nurse's Session)Introduction: Understanding how children cope with the
diagnosis and treatment of cancer is a crucial step toward
designing appropriate psycho-educational interventions.
This paper aimed to explore how Hong Kong Chinese
children cope with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer,
an area of research that has been underrepresented in existing
literature.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was employed. Eightyeight
Hong Kong Chinese children aged 9 to 16 years,
admitted for treatment of cancer in 2 paediatric oncology
units, were invited to participate in the study. A one-to-one
short interview was conducted. Content analysis was used
to analyze the interview data. The differences in coping
strategies used between children's sex and age group were
assessed by using chi-square test.
Results: Findings from this study indicated that the most
commonly reported coping strategy used by Hong Kong
Chinese children was self-control (emotion-focused). This
finding is incongruent with previous studies on Western
children in which it was found that seeking social support
(problem-focused) was the most commonly reported coping
strategy. On the other hand, this study revealed that children
used different coping strategies at different developmental
stages, with younger children used less problem-focused
and more emotionfocused coping strategies than older
children. Discussion: The diagnosis and treatment of childhood
cancer have been described as extremely stressful and
threatening experiences in the life of a child. This study has
addressed a gap in the literature by examining how Hong
Kong Chinese children coped with and responded to the
diagnosis and treatment of cancer. It is anticipated that the
information derived from this study would help nurses to
shape and design appropriate psycho-educational
interventions that can help ease the burden of cancer
treatment and provide support for childhood cancer survivors
to flight cancer and its subsequent adverse treatment effects
at every step of their long and difficult journey.published_or_final_versio
Studies toward an improved synthesis of anti-tumour natural products pseudolaric acids A and B
Poster 64The Abstracts Book's web site is located at http://wizard.musc.edu/Frontiers%202013%20Abstract%20Booklet.pdfOur group has reported the first total synthesis of pseudolaric acid A.2 However, the key step of the carbene cyclization cycloaddition cascade (CCCC) reaction does not give an ideal result, in which the dr of the reaction is only 1.6:1. The CCCC reaction can be understood on the basis of frontier molecular orbital energies. An additional carbonyl group (such as CO2Me) will reduce the energy level of LUMO (dipole) orbital, thus the energy gap between the LUMO (dipole) and the HOMO (dipolarophile) is decreased.3 The interaction should be energetically more favourable and the dr value is anticipated to improve. With modified electronic properties or substrates, alternative Rh(II) catalysts to promote the reaction were examined. We will report on our progress in a model study and improved second generation strategy toward the total synthesis of pseudolaric acids A and B.postprin
Mega-projects and China's neoliberal new town development: the case of Songjiang New Town in Shanghai
Conference Theme: Building the 21st Century City: Inclusion, Innovation, and GlobalizationSession - Megaprojects and City Branding [Urban Issues In Asia & Pacific Rim Track]The Book of Abstracts' web site is located at http://www.urbanaffairsassociation.org/pdfs/2013_abstracts.pdfWith the marketâoriented reform in China, its urbanization process is undergoing profound neoliberal shifts (Wu, 2008). This paper aims to understand China's emerging neoliberal urban development by examining new town development in Shanghai. In 2001, the suburbs of Shanghai have been brought into development agenda due to the pressure of increasing urban population and the need of new economic growth poles, and the new town program...postprin
