Reappraising the Spite Lithium Plateau: Extremely Thin and Marginally Consistent with WMAP

The lithium abundance in 62 halo dwarfs is determined from accurate equivalent widths reported in the literature and an improved infrared flux method (IRFM) temperature scale. The Li abundance of 41 plateau stars (those with Teff > 6000 K) is found to be independent of temperature and metallicity, with a star-to-star scatter of only 0.06 dex over a broad range of temperatures (6000 K < Teff < 6800 K) and metallicities (-3.4 < [Fe/H] < -1), thus imposing stringent constraints on depletion by mixing and production by Galactic chemical evolution. We find a mean Li plateau abundance of A(Li) = 2.37 dex (7Li/H = 2.34 X 10^{-10}), which, considering errors of the order of 0.1 dex in the absolute abundance scale, is just in borderline agreement with the constraints imposed by the theory of primordial nucleosynthesis and WMAP data (2.51 < A(Li)[WMAP] < 2.66 dex).Comment: ApJ Letters, in pres

Differential cross sections for 3^3He-α\alpha scattering were measured in the energy range up to 3 MeV. These data together with other available experimental results for 3^3He +α+ \alpha and 3^3H +α+ \alpha scattering were analyzed in the framework of the optical model using double-folded potentials. The optical potentials obtained were used to calculate the astrophysical S-factors of the capture reactions 3^3He(α,γ)7(\alpha,\gamma)^7Be and 3^3H(α,γ)7(\alpha,\gamma)^7Li, and the branching ratios for the transitions into the two final 7^7Be and 7^7Li bound states, respectively. For 3^3He(α,γ)7(\alpha,\gamma)^7Be excellent agreement between calculated and experimental data is obtained. For 3^3H(α,γ)7(\alpha,\gamma)^7Li a S(0)S(0) value has been found which is a factor of about 1.5 larger than the adopted value. For both capture reactions a similar branching ratio of R=σ(γ1)/σ(γ0)0.43R = \sigma(\gamma_1)/\sigma(\gamma_0) \approx 0.43 has been obtained.Comment: submitted to Phys.Rev.C, 34 pages, figures available from one of the authors, LaTeX with RevTeX, IK-TUW-Preprint 930540

    Three Li-rich K giants: IRAS 12327-6523, IRAS 13539-4153, and IRAS 17596-3952

We report on spectroscopic analyses of three K giants previously suggested to be Li-rich: IRAS 12327-6523, IRAS 13539-4153, and IRAS 17596-3952. High-resolution optical spectra and the LTE model atmospheres are used to derive the stellar parameters: (TeffT_{\rm eff}, log gg, [Fe/H]), elemental abundances, and the isotopic ratio 12^{12}C/13^{13}C. IRAS 13539-4153 shows an extremely high Li abundance of logϵ\log\epsilon(Li) \approx 4.2, a value ten times more than the present Li abundance in the local interstellar medium. This is the third highest Li abundance yet reported for a K giant. IRAS 12327-6523 shows a Li abundances of logϵ\log\epsilon(Li)\approx 1.4. IRAS 17596-3952 is a rapidly rotating (VsiniV{\sin i} \approx 35 km s1^{-1}) K giant with logϵ\log\epsilon(Li) \approx 2.2. Infrared photometry which shows the presence of an IR excess suggesting mass-loss. A comparison is made between these three stars and previously recognized Li-rich giants.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, accepted for A
