Measurement of the squeezed vacuum state by a bichromatic local oscillator
We present the experimental measurement of a squeezed vacuum state by means
of a bichromatic local oscillator (BLO). A pair of local oscillators at 5
MHz around the central frequency of the fundamental field with
equal power are generated by three acousto-optic modulators and phase-locked,
which are used as a BLO. The squeezed vacuum light are detected by a
phase-sensitive balanced-homodyne detection with a BLO. The baseband signal
around combined with a broad squeezed field can be detected with
the sensitivity below the shot-noise limit, in which the baseband signal is
shifted to the vicinity of 5 MHz (the half of the BLO separation). This work
has the important applications in quantum state measurement and quantum

Maximum Smoothed Likelihood Component Density Estimation in Mixture Models with Known Mixing Proportions
In this paper, we propose a maximum smoothed likelihood method to estimate
the component density functions of mixture models, in which the mixing
proportions are known and may differ among observations. The proposed estimates
maximize a smoothed log likelihood function and inherit all the important
properties of probability density functions. A majorization-minimization
algorithm is suggested to compute the proposed estimates numerically. In
theory, we show that starting from any initial value, this algorithm increases
the smoothed likelihood function and further leads to estimates that maximize
the smoothed likelihood function. This indicates the convergence of the
algorithm. Furthermore, we theoretically establish the asymptotic convergence
rate of our proposed estimators. An adaptive procedure is suggested to choose
the bandwidths in our estimation procedure. Simulation studies show that the
proposed method is more efficient than the existing method in terms of
integrated squared errors. A real data example is further analyzed
Indirect unitarity violation entangled with matter effects in reactor antineutrino oscillations
If finite but tiny masses of the three active neutrinos are generated via the
canonical seesaw mechanism with three heavy sterile neutrinos, the 3\times 3
Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata neutrino mixing matrix V will not be exactly
unitary. This kind of indirect unitarity violation can be probed in a precision
reactor antineutrino oscillation experiment, but it may be entangled with
terrestrial matter effects as both of them are very small. We calculate the
probability of \overline{\nu}_e \to \overline{\nu}_e oscillations in a good
analytical approximation, and find that, besides the zero-distance effect, the
effect of unitarity violation is always smaller than matter effects, and their
entanglement does not appear until the next-to-leading-order oscillating terms
are taken into account. Given a 20-kiloton JUNO-like liquid scintillator
detector, we reaffirm that terrestrial matter effects should not be neglected
but indirect unitarity violation makes no difference, and demonstrate that the
experimental sensitivities to the neutrino mass ordering and a precision
measurement of \theta_{12} and \Delta_{21} \equiv m^2_2 - m^2_1 are robust.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, version to be published in PLB, more discussions
