    Template-based Gravitational-Wave Echoes Search Using Bayesian Model Selection

    The ringdown of the gravitational-wave signal from a merger of two black holes has been suggested as a probe of the structure of the remnant compact object, which may be more exotic than a black hole. It has been pointed out that there will be a train of echoes in the late-time ringdown stage for different types of exotic compact objects. In this paper, we present a template-based search methodology using Bayesian statistics to search for echoes of gravitational waves. Evidence for the presence or absence of echoes in gravitational-wave events can be established by performing Bayesian model selection. The Occam factor in Bayesian model selection will automatically penalize the more complicated model that echoes are present in gravitational-wave strain data because of its higher degree of freedom to fit the data. We find that the search methodology was able to identify gravitational-wave echoes with Abedi et al.'s echoes waveform model about 82.3% of the time in simulated Gaussian noise in the Advanced LIGO and Virgo network and about 61.1% of the time in real noise in the first observing run of Advanced LIGO with 5σ\geq 5\sigma significance. Analyses using this method are performed on the data of Advanced LIGO's first observing run, and we find no statistical significant evidence for the detection of gravitational-wave echoes. In particular, we find <1σ<1\sigma combined evidence of the three events in Advanced LIGO's first observing run. The analysis technique developed in this paper is independent of the waveform model used, and can be used with different parametrized echoes waveform models to provide more realistic evidence of the existence of echoes from exotic compact objects.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure

    Quantum Oscillations in Cux_xBi2_2Se3_3 in High Magnetic Fields

    Cux_xBi2_2Se3_3 has drawn much attention as the leading candidate to be the first topological superconductor and the realization of coveted Majorana particles in a condensed matter system. However, there has been increasing controversy about the nature of its superconducting phase. This study sheds light on present ambiguity in the normal state electronic state, by providing a complete look at the quantum oscillations in magnetization in Cux_xBi2_2Se3_3 at intense high fields up to 31T. Our study focuses on the angular dependence of the quantum oscillation pattern in a low carrier concentration. As magnetic field tilts from along the crystalline c-axis to ab-plane, the change of the oscillation period follows the prediction of the ellipsoidal Fermi surface. As the doping level changes, the 3D Fermi surface is found to transform into quasi-cylindrical at high carrier density. Such a transition is potentially a Lifshitz transition of the electronic state in Cux_xBi2_2Se3_3.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Insulator-metal transition shift related to magnetic polarons in La0.67-xYxCa0.33MnO3

    The magnetic transport properties have been measured for La0.67-xYxCa0.33MnO3 (0 <= x <= 0.14) system. It was found that the transition temperature Tp almost linearly moves to higher temperature as H increases. Electron spin resonance confirms that above Tp, there exist ferromagnetic clusters. From the magnetic polaron point of view, the shift of Tp vs. H was understood, and it was estimated that the size of the magnetic polaron is of 9.7~15.4 angstrom which is consistent with the magnetic correlation length revealed by the small-angle neutron-scattering technique.     Entropy, Dynamics and Instantaneous Normal Modes in a Random Energy Model

    It is shown that the fraction f of imaginary frequency instantaneous normal modes (INM) may be defined and calculated in a random energy model(REM) of liquids. The configurational entropy S and the averaged hopping rate among the states R are also obtained and related to f, with the results R~f and S=a+b*ln(f). The proportionality between R and f is the basis of existing INM theories of diffusion, so the REM further confirms their validity. A link to S opens new avenues for introducing INM into dynamical theories. Liquid 'states' are usually defined by assigning a configuration to the minimum to which it will drain, but the REM naturally treats saddle-barriers on the same footing as minima, which may be a better mapping of the continuum of configurations to discrete states. Requirements of a detailed REM description of liquids are discussed

    Chaos control in random Boolean networks by reducing mean damage percolation rate

    Chaos control in Random Boolean networks is implemented by freezing part of the network to drive it from chaotic to ordered phase. However, controlled nodes are only viewed as passive blocks to prevent perturbation spread. This paper proposes a new control method in which controlled nodes can exert an active impact on the network. Controlled nodes and frozen values are deliberately selected according to the information of connection and Boolean functions. Simulation results show that the number of nodes needed to achieve control is largely reduced compared to previous method. Theoretical analysis is also given to estimate the least fraction of nodes needed to achieve control.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure

    Dynamics and pattern formation in invasive tumor growth

    In this work, we study the in-vitro dynamics of the most malignant form of the primary brain tumor: Glioblastoma Multiforme. Typically, the growing tumor consists of the inner dense proliferating zone and the outer less dense invasive region. Experiments with different types of cells show qualitatively different behavior. Wild-type cells invade a spherically symmetric manner, but mutant cells are organized in tenuous branches. We formulate a model for this sort of growth using two coupled reaction-diffusion equations for the cell and nutrient concentrations. When the ratio of the nutrient and cell diffusion coefficients exceeds some critical value, the plane propagating front becomes unstable with respect to transversal perturbations. The instability threshold and the full phase-plane diagram in the parameter space are determined. The results are in a good agreement with experimental findings for the two types of cells.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Evidence for a full energy gap for nickel-pnictide LaNiAsO_{1-x}F_x superconductors by ^{75}As nuclear quadrupole resonance

    We report systematic ^{75}As-NQR and ^{139}La-NMR studies on nickel-pnictide superconductors LaNiAsO_{1-x}F_x (x=0, 0.06, 0.10 and 0.12). The spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 decreases below T_c with a well-defined coherence peak and follows an exponential decay at low temperatures. This result indicates that the superconducting gap is fully opened, and is strikingly different from that observed in iron-pnictide analogs. In the normal state, 1/T_1T is constant in the temperature range T_c \sim 4 K < T <10 K for all compounds and up to T=250 K for x=0 and 0.06, which indicates weak electron correlations and is also different from the iron analog. We argue that the differences between the iron and nickel pnictides arise from the different electronic band structure. Our results highlight the importance of the peculiar Fermi-surface topology in iron-pnictides.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
