Flocking Regimes in a Simple Lattice Model
We study a one-dimensional lattice flocking model incorporating all three of
the flocking criteria proposed by Reynolds [Computer Graphics vol.21 4 (1987)]:
alignment, centring and separation. The model generalises that introduced by O.
J. O' Loan and M. R. Evans [J. Phys. A. vol. 32 L99 (1999)]. We motivate the
dynamical rules by microscopic sampling considerations. The model exhibits
various flocking regimes: the alternating flock, the homogeneous flock and
dipole structures. We investigate these regimes numerically and within a
continuum mean-field theory.Comment: 24 pages 7 figure
Real-space renormalization group study of the Hubbard model on a non-bipartite lattice
We present the real-space block renormalization group equations for fermion
systems described by a Hubbard Hamiltonian on a triangular lattice with
hexagonal blocks. The conditions that keep the equations from proliferation of
the couplings are derived. Computational results are presented including the
occurrence of a first-order metal-insulator transition at the critical value of
Mark 3 real-time fringe detection system
A RAM memory built into the Mark 3 decoder module allows the capture of 1 Megabit of data. Data may be collected either in real time or from a pre-recorded tape. Once collected, the data may be retrieved using a standard EIA serial data link. The data may be transmitted to a remote computer for cross correlation processing with similar data from other stations to verify fringes in real time. The data may also be analyzed by a local computer to verify phase calibration, bandpass, format, etc., during a Mark 3 observing session
Performance of coated columbium and tantalum alloys in plasma arc reentry simulation tests
The evaluation of coated refractory metals screened in stagnation model plasma arc tests is reported. Columbium alloys FS-85, C-129Y, and Cb-752 coated with Si-20Cr-20Fe (R512E) were tested at 1390 C. Three silicide coatings on Ta-10W were tested at 1470 C. Half-hour cycles and a 6500 N/sqm stagnation pressure were used. The best R512E coated columbium alloy was FS-85 with first local coating breakdowns occurring in 12 to 50 cycles. At coating defects, low metal recession rates (0.005 mm/min) were generally observed on coated columbium alloys while high rates (0.15 mm/min) were observed on coated Ta-10W. Coated columbium suffered large emittance losses (to below 0.7) due to surface refractory metal pentoxide formation

Experimental proposal for accurate determination of the phase relaxation time and testing a formation of thermalized non-equilibrated matter in highly excited quantum many-body systems
We estimate how accurate the phase relaxation time of quantum many-body
systems can be determined from data on forward peaking of evaporating protons
from a compound nucleus. The angular range and accuracy of the data needed for
a reliable determination of the phase relaxation time are evaluated. The
general method is applied to analyze the inelastic scattering of 18 MeV protons
from Pt for which previously measured double differential cross sections for
two angles in the evaporating domain of the spectra show a strong forward
peaking. A new experiment for an improved determination of the phase relaxation
time is proposed. The experiment is also highly desirable for an accurate test
of a formation of thermalized non-equilibrated matter in quantum many-body
