Criminal prohibitions on membership in terrorist organizations

It begins by providing a definition of a terrorist organization. It then describes the far-reaching modern prohibitions on membership in terrorist organizations in various jurisdictions. The article goes on to provide a doctrinal analysis of membership offenses. Based on similarities with conspiracy doctrine, membership offenses are analyzed as expansions of attempt law or, in some cases, of complicity doctrines. The justfiability of this expansion is examined. The article introduces a distinction between exclusively terrorist organizations, passive membership of which can be legitimately prohibited under certain conditions, and ancillary and dual-purpose organizations, passive membership of which cannot be legitimately prohibited. Next, the justiflability ofprohibiting more active forms of membership in each of these types of organizations is discussed. Last, guidelines for the legislation of appropriate prohibitions are proposed

The Impact of Family Economic Structure on Dual-Earners’ Career and Family Satisfaction

The present study builds on the explanatory power of the “doing gender” perspective to understand the effects of family economic structure on the family and career satisfaction of husbands and wives. Using data from a two-panel, couple-level survey of full-time employed middle-class families in the Northeastern United States, we find that when wives’ earnings increase relative to their husbands’, their career satisfaction significantly increases whereas their husbands’ is significantly depressed. In contrast, family economic structure has little effect on women’ and men’s level of family satisfaction, although we find a significant reduction in family satisfaction among couples who have recently shifted towards a more equal-earner economic structure. Our findings underscore the importance of considering both husbands’ and wives’ attitudes towards work and career in understanding how “gender is done” in couples, and in addressing the resulting family and work relations and dynamics. Focusing on the disjuncture between longstanding gender norms and current employment and earning patterns, we highlight the potential impact of these findings for couples, counselors, and organizations

Regenerating Synovial Lining of the Normal Rabbit Knee: A Scanning Electron Microscopy Study

Regeneration of the synovial lining in the synovectomized rabbit knee was studied using the scanning electron microscope. The resected synovia regenerated considerably 3 weeks after synovectomy. However, 44 weeks following excision, their surface morphology was still very different from that of the normal tissue of intact animals. The regenerated synovia were characterized by three main features: the large number of various patterns, the many fields harboring fibrillation and the almost total lack of a bubble layer (the latter was formerly shown to be predominant on normal, intact synovia). The surface morphology of the non-operated (contralateral) knee differed greatly from that of normal synovia. The surface of sham-operated synovia was totally covered by the bubble layer. The appearance of vast fields harboring fibrillations indicated deficient ultrastructural regeneration. The altered surface morphology of the contralateral synovia was a novel finding. We wonder whether it would be appropriate to propose that the systemic reaction induced by synovectomy of the experimental knee initiated the synovial appearances recorded on the contralateral knee. The data reported here rule out the possibility of using the contralateral leg as an intact control
