    Phosphorylation of the actin binding protein Drebrin at S647 and is regulated by neuronal activity and PTEN

    Get PDF
    Defects in actin dynamics affect activity-dependent modulation of synaptic transmission and neuronal plasticity, and can cause cognitive impairment. A salient candidate actin-binding protein linking synaptic dysfunction to cognitive deficits is Drebrin (DBN). However, the specific mode of how DBN is regulated at the central synapse is largely unknown. In this study we identify and characterize the interaction of the PTEN tumor suppressor with DBN. Our results demonstrate that PTEN binds DBN and that this interaction results in the dephosphorylation of a site present in the DBN C-terminus - serine 647. PTEN and pS647-DBN segregate into distinct and complimentary compartments in neurons, supporting the idea that PTEN negatively regulates DBN phosphorylation at this site. We further demonstrate that neuronal activity increases phosphorylation of DBN at S647 in hippocampal neurons in vitro and in ex vivo hippocampus slices exhibiting seizure activity, potentially by inducing rapid dissociation of the PTEN:DBN complex. Our results identify a novel mechanism by which PTEN is required to maintain DBN phosphorylation at dynamic range and signifies an unusual regulation of an actin-binding protein linked to cognitive decline and degenerative conditions at the CNS synapse

    Dalitz Plot Analysis of the Decay D^+ --> K^- pi^+ pi^+ and Indication of a Low-Mass Scalar K pi Resonance

    Full text link
    We study the Dalitz plot of the decay D^+ --> K^- pi^+ pi^+ with a sample of 15090 events from Fermilab experiment E791. Modeling the decay amplitude as the coherent sum of known K pi resonances and a uniform nonresonant term, we do not obtain an acceptable fit. If we allow the mass and width of the K^*_0(1430) to float, we obtain values consistent with those from PDG but the chi^2 per degree of freedom of the fit is still unsatisfactory. A good fit is found when we allow for the presence of an additional scalar resonance, with mass 797 +/- 19 +/- 43 MeV/c^2 and width 410 +/- 43 +/- 87 MeV/c^2. The mass and width of the K^*_0(1430) become 1459 +/- 7 +/- 5 MeV/c^2 and 175 +/- 12 +/- 12 MeV/c^2, respectively. Our results provide new information on the scalar sector in hadron spectroscopy.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

    Predictors of linkage to care following community-based HIV counseling and testing in rural Kenya

    Get PDF
    Despite innovations in HIV counseling and testing (HCT), important gaps remain in understanding linkage to care. We followed a cohort diagnosed with HIV through a community-based HCT campaign that trained persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) as navigators. Individual, interpersonal, and institutional predictors of linkage were assessed using survival analysis of self-reported time to enrollment. Of 483 persons consenting to follow-up, 305 (63.2%) enrolled in HIV care within 3 months. Proportions linking to care were similar across sexes, barring a sub-sample of men aged 18–25 years who were highly unlikely to enroll. Men were more likely to enroll if they had disclosed to their spouse, and women if they had disclosed to family. Women who anticipated violence or relationship breakup were less likely to link to care. Enrolment rates were significantly higher among participants receiving a PLHA visit, suggesting that a navigator approach may improve linkage from community-based HCT campaigns.Vestergaard Frandse

    Branching Fractions for D0 -> K+K- and D0 -> pi+pi-, and a Search for CP Violation in D0 Decays

    Full text link
    Using the large hadroproduced charm sample collected in experiment E791 at Fermilab, we have measured ratios of branching fractions for the two-body singly-Cabibbo-suppressed charged decays of the D0: (D0 -> KK)/(D0 -> Kpi) = 0.109 +- 0.003 +- 0.003, (D0 -> pipi)/(D0 -> Kpi) = 0.040 +- 0.002 +- 0.003, and (D0 -> KK)/(D0 -> pipi) = 2.75 +- 0.15 +- 0.16. We have looked for differences in the decay rates of D0 and D0bar to the CP eigenstates K+K- and pi+pi-, and have measured the CP asymmetry parameters A_CP(K+K-) = -0.010 +- 0.049 +- 0.012 and A_CP(pi+pi-) = -0.049 +- 0.078 +- 0.030, both consistent with zero.Comment: 10 Postscript pages, including 2 figures.     Study of the Ds+ππ+π+D^+_s \to \pi^- \pi^+ \pi^+ decay and measurement of f0f_0 masses and widths

    Full text link
    From a sample of 848 ±\pm 44 Ds+ππ+π+D_s^+ \to \pi^- \pi^+ \pi^+ decays, we find Γ(Ds+ππ+π+)/Γ(Ds+ϕπ+)=0.245±0.0280.012+0.019\Gamma(D_s^+ \to \pi^- \pi^+ \pi^+) / \Gamma(D_s^+ \to \phi \pi^+) = 0.245 \pm 0.028^{+0.019}_{-0.012} . Using a Dalitz plot analysis of this three body decay, we find significant contributions from the channels ρ0(770)π+\rho^0(770)\pi^+, ρ0(1450)π+\rho^0(1450)\pi^+, f0(980)π+f_0(980)\pi^+, f2(1270)π+f_2(1270)\pi^+, and f0(1370)π+f_0(1370)\pi^+. We present also the values obtained for masses and widths of the resonances f0(980)f_0(980) and f0(1370)f_0(1370).Comment: 10 pages, 3 eps figure

    Experimental evidence for a light and broad scalar resonance in D+ππ+π+D^+\to \pi^-\pi^+\pi^+ decay

    Full text link
    From a sample of 1172±611172 \pm 61 D+ππ+π+D^+ \to \pi^- \pi^+ \pi^+ decay, we find Γ(D+ππ+π+)/Γ(D+Kπ+π+)=0.0311±0.00180.0026+0.0016\Gamma (D^+ \to \pi^- \pi^+ \pi^+) / \Gamma (D^+ \to K^- \pi^+ \pi^+) = 0.0311 \pm 0.0018 ^{+0.0016}_{-0.0026}. Using a coherent amplitude analysis to fit the Dalitz plot of this decays, we find strong evidence that a scalar resonance of mass 47823+24±17478^{+24}_{-23} \pm 17 MeV/c2c^2 and width 32440+42±21324^{+42}_{-40} \pm 21 MeV/c2c^2 accounts for approximately half of all decays.Comment: 10 pages, 3 eps figure

    Direct measurement of the pion valence quark momentum distribution, the pion light-cone wave function squared

    Full text link
    We present the first direct measurements of the pion valence quark momentum distribution which is related to the square of the pion light-cone wave function. The measurements were carried out using data on diffractive dissociation of 500 GeV/c π\pi^- into di-jets from a platinum target at Fermilab experiment E791. The results show that the qqˉ>|q\bar {q}> light-cone asymptotic wave function, which was developed using perturbative QCD methods, describes the data well for Q210 (GeV/c)2Q^2 \sim 10 ~{\rm (GeV/c)^2} or more. We also measured the transverse momentum distribution of the diffractive di-jets.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

    Search for Rare and Forbidden Dilepton Decays of the D+, Ds, and D0 Charmed Mesons

    Full text link
    We report the results of a search for flavor-changing neutral current, lepton-flavor violating, and lepton-number violating decays of D+, Ds, and D0 mesons (and their antiparticles) into modes containing muons and electrons. Using data from Fermilab charm hadroproduction experiment E791, we examine the pi,l,l and K,l,l decay modes of D+ and Ds and the l+l- decay modes of D0. No evidence for any of these decays is found. Therefore, we present branching-fraction upper limits at 90% confidence level for the 24 decay modes examined. Eight of these modes have no previously reported limits, and fourteen are reported with significant improvements over previously published results.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, LaTeX, elsart.cls, epsf.sty, amsmath.sty Submitted to Physics Letters

    Measurement of the form-factor ratios for D+ --> K* l nu

    Full text link
    The form factor ratios rv=V(0)/A1(0), r2=A2(0)/A1(0) and r3=A3(0)/A1(0) in the decay D+ --> K* l nu, K* -->K-pi+ have been measured using data from charm hadroproduction experiment E791 at Fermilab. From 3034 (595) signal (background) events in the muon channel, we obtain rv=1.84+-0.11+-0.09, r2=0.75+-0.08+-0.09 and, as a first measurement of r3, we find 0.04+-0.33 +-0.29. The values of the form factor ratios rv and r2 measured for the muon channel are combined with the values of rv and r2 that we have measured in the electron channel. The combined E791 results for the muon and electron channels are rv=1.87+-0.08+-0.07 and r2=0.73+-0.06+-0.08.Comment: 9 pages + 3 figures ; submitted to PL
