Special features of the Be2He fragmentation in emulsion at an energy of 1.2~A~GeV
The results of investigations of the relativistic Be nucleus
fragmentation in emulsion which entails the production of two He fragments of
an energy of 1.2~A~GeV are presented. The results of the angular measurements
of the Be2He events are analyzed.
The BeBe+n fragmentation channel involving the Be decay from
the ground (0) and the first excited (2) states to two
particles is observed to be predominant.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, conference: Conference on Physics of Fundamental

Topology of "white" stars in relativistic fragmentation of light nuclei
In the present paper, experimental observations of the multifragmentation
processes of light relativistic nuclei carried out by means of emulsions are
reviewed. Events of the type of "white" stars in which the dissociation of
relativistic nuclei is not accompanied by the production of mesons and the
target-nucleus fragments are considered.
A distinctive feature of the charge topology in the dissociation of the Ne,
Mg, Si, and S nuclei is an almost total suppression of the binary splitting of
nuclei to fragments with charges higher than 2. The growth of the nuclear
fragmentation degree is revealed in an increase in the multiplicity of singly
and doubly charged fragments with decreasing charge of the non-excited part of
the fragmenting nucleus.
The processes of dissociation of stable Li, Be, B, C, N, and O isotopes to
charged fragments were used to study special features of the formation of
systems consisting of the lightest , d, and t nuclei. Clustering in
form of the He nucleus can be detected in "white" stars via the
dissociation of neutron-deficient Be, B, C, and N isotopes.Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures, 9 tables, conference: Conference on Physics of

Clustering in light nuclei in fragmentation above 1 A GeV
The relativistic invariant approach is applied to analyzing the 3.3 A GeV
Ne fragmentation in a nuclear track emulsion. New results on few-body
dissociations have been obtained from the emulsion exposures to 2.1 A GeV
N and 1.2 A GeV Be nuclei. It can be asserted that the use of the
invariant approach is an effective means of obtaining conclusions about the
behavior of systems involving a few He nuclei at a relative energy close to 1
MeV per nucleon. The first observations of fragmentation of 1.2 A GeV B
and C nuclei in emulsion are described. The presented results allow one
to justify the development of few-body aspects of nuclear astrophysics.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables, Nuclear Physics in Astrophysics-2,

Cell type-specific anti-cancer properties of valproic acid: independent effects on HDAC activity and Erk1/2 phosphorylation

Abstract

Background

The anti-epileptic drug valproic acid (VPA) has attracted attention as an anti-cancer agent.

Methods

The present study investigated effects of VPA exposure on histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibition, cell growth, cell speed, and the degree of Erk1/2 phosphorylation in 10 cell lines (BT4C, BT4Cn, U87MG, N2a, PC12-E2, CSML0, CSML100, HeLa, L929, Swiss 3T3).

Results

VPA induced significant histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibition in most of the cell lines, but the degree of inhibition was highly cell type-specific. Moreover, cell growth, motility and the degree of Erk1/2 phosphorylation were inhibited, activated, or unaffected by VPA in a cell type-specific manner. Importantly, no relationship was found between the effects of VPA on HDAC inhibition and changes in the degree of Erk1/2 phosphorylation, cell growth, or motility. In contrast, VPA-induced modulation of the MAPK pathway downstream of Ras but upstream of MEK (i.e., at the level of Raf) was important for changes in cell speed.

Conclusions

These results suggest that VPA can modulate the degree of Erk1/2 phosphorylation in a manner unrelated to HDAC inhibition and emphasize that changes in the degree of Erk1/2 phosphorylation are also important for the anti-cancer properties of VPA.</p
Keeping the Vimentin Network under Control: Cell–Matrix Adhesion–associated Plectin 1f Affects Cell Shape and Polarity of Fibroblasts
Mature focal adhesions and fibrillar adhesions act as anchorage sites for vimentin filaments, with plectin isoform 1f being the crucial linker protein. Plectin serves as a nucleation and assembly center for the de novo formation of vimentin networks. Anchored vimentin creates a resilient cage-like core structure that affects cell shape
LOW-INVASIVE TREATMENT OF PANCREATOGENIC RETROPERITONEAL ABSCESSES
The article presents the experience of treatment of pancreatogenic retroperitoneal abscesses in 52 patients with the application of low-invasive surgery under ultrasonic inspection. The percutaneous abscess drainage was performed for all the patients. The most optimal conditions for drainage were determined with an allowance of localization, sizes and character of abscess content. An optimal approach to the abscess was chosen through the safe acoustic window in such a way, that the drainage was located in extraperitoneal position and outside the organs. The drainage was installed using «stylet-catheter» system in majority of cases. Drainage sizes and their number were selected on the basis of cavity sizes and its content. The fistulography was carried out after drainage for all the patients. This allowed detection of characteristics of purulent cavity and visual comprehension of its connection with the Wirsung’s duct. Recanalization and outwardly-internal drainage were used in the case of the blocked Wirsung’s duct in order to prevent pancreatic fistulas. The low-invasive drainage allowed avoiding an open operation and reducing the percentage of postoperative complications
New approaches to emergency prevention and treatment of viral infections by the example of tick-borne encephalitis and influenza
Jodantipyrin® is an inductor of endogenous interferon (IFN) which is used in the treatment of a variety of viral infections, including tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and influenza. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Jodantipyrin® in the emergency prevention and/or treatment of influenza and the febrile form of TBE
