Testing Alternative Theories of the Property Price-Trading Volume Correlation

    Get PDF
This article examines the correlation between the real housing price and trading volume. Contrary to the predictions of standard rational expectation models, a robust positive correlation between the two variables is identified. While no clear lead-lag relationship is found in the raw data, which is more consistent with the downpayment effect model, the medium-run component of the trading volume tends to lead (and Granger cause) the corresponding component of the property price, which is more consistent with the search theoretic model. An explanation for this difference in behavior is suggested and several future research directions are provided.

The objectives of this study are to evaluate the efficiency of removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and to ascertain the fate of Cr(VI) in the treatment process. An SBR was operated with the FILL, REACT, SETTLE, DRAW and IDLE periods in the time ratio of 2:12:2:1.5:6.5 for a cycle time of 24 h. The study was divided into 5 phases with the addition of 0.5, 2.0, 3.0 and 5.0 mg/ā„“ of Cr(VI) in Phases II, III, IV and V for a duration of 46, 75, 43 and 16 operational cycles, respectively. The Cr(VI) removal efficiencies for SBR were found to be 79.8, 88.4 and 99.8% in Phases III, IV and V, respectively. The results revealed that Cr(VI) removal efficiency improved with acclimated activated sludge. Determination of Cr in the suspended sludge showed that around 95% of the Cr species were Cr(III). Determination of Cr concentration profiles during the FILL and REACT periods showed that the predominant species was Cr(III) as Cr(VI) was bio-reduced. The proposed Cr(VI) removal mechanism involves bioreduction to Cr(III) which was subsequently precipitated and adsorbed by activated sludge. Precipitation rather than sorption is envisaged to be the main path of removal of Cr(III) from the solution. Keywords: Sequencing batch reactor, hexavalent chromium, removal, transformation, mechanis

    Get PDF
Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the composting performance of anaerobically treated palm oil mill effluent (AnPOME) mixed with paper and grass clippings. Methods Composting was conducted using a laboratory scale system for 40 days. Several parameters were determined: temperature, mass reduction, pH, electrical conductivity, colour, zeta potential, phytotoxicity and final compost nutrients. Results The moisture content and compost mass were reduced by 24 and 18 %, respectively. Both final compost pH value and electrical conductivity were found to increase in value. Colour (measured as PtCo) was not suitable as a maturity indicator. The negative zeta potential values decreased from āˆ’12.25 to āˆ’21.80 mV. The phytotoxicity of the compost mixture was found to decrease in value during the process and the final nutrient value of the compost indicates its suitability as a soil conditioner. Conclusions From this study, we conclude that the addition of paper and grass clippings can be a potential substrate to be composted with anaerobically treated palm oil mill effluent (AnPOME). The final compost produced is suitable for soil conditioner

EFFECTS OF REHABILITATION ON BACK MUSCLE CONTRACTION PATTERNS OF LOW BACK PAIN PATIENTS

    Get PDF
The aims of this study were to conduct a comparative investigation of muscle function between low back pain (LBP) patients and normal subjects, as well as to explore whether intensive rehabilitation can change back muscle contraction synergy. 20 normal subjects and 20 patients with chronic LBP were asked to perform symmetrical and asymmetrical tasks. LBP patients were tested in the weeks immediately before and after 12-week LBP rehabilitation treatment. Tasks include ā€œcarryingā€ weights up and down with a 45Ā° left rotation. Eight channel surface EMG electrodes were placed on the surface of paraspinal muscles. correlation between right and left corresponding muscles as well as between pre- and post-treatment were calculated. Lifting capacity for LBP patients were also measured before and after treatment. EMG profiles showed that the muscle activity strategies varied between normal subjects and LBP patients. The correlation coefficients for spinal muscles have shown very reproducible intra-subject muscle contraction synergies. Unbalanced EMG patterns found in LBP patients under symmetrical tasks were not affected by rehabilitation treatment

Development of coconut oil/capric acid eutectic phase change material with graphene as latent thermal energy storage.

    Get PDF
In this study, a eutectic mixture of coconut oil (CO)-capric acid (CA) was synthesised and investigated with the aim of producing newly eutectic phase change materials (PCMs) with improved thermal properties as thermal energy storage (TES). Although eutectic fatty acids have been widely studied, the information on the thermal properties of the CO-CA eutectic mixture is very limited to the authors' knowledge. Coconut oil offers good thermal and chemical stability with acceptable latent heat and melting temperature. The thermal properties of the eutectic mixture were enhanced by graphene addition at 1, 3, 5, and 7 wt% concentrations. The surfactant was added to the mixture to avoid the sedimentation of graphene. The material characterisation techniques include thermal conductivity measurement, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and Thermal Gravimetric (TG) analysis. The results revealed that the pure eutectic CO-CA has a melting point of 23.5Ā°C with a latent heat of 110 J/g. With the addition of graphene, the melting point of the mixture is 22.8Ā°C, and the latent heat is 103 J/g. Overall, the findings showed that the thermal conductivity improved by 21.7% for 7wt% graphene concentration. The spectra from FTIR and TG analysis showed that the mixture offers thermal and chemical stability. The promising findings in this study showed that the newly developed eutectic mixture with improved thermal properties makes them favourable to be used as TES for low-temperature applications

Realistic interpretation of a superposition state does not imply a mixture

Contrary to previous claims, it is shown that, for an ensemble of either single-particle systems or multi-particle systems, the realistic interpretation of a superposition state that mathematically describes the ensemble does not imply that the ensemble is a mixture. Therefore it cannot be argued that the realistic interpretation is wrong on the basis that some predictions derived from the mixture are different from the corresponding predictions derived from the superposition state

Processing of strong flux trapping high T(subc) oxide superconductors: Center director's discretionary fund

    Get PDF
Magnetic suspension effect was first observed in samples of YBa2Cu3O7/AgO(Y-123/AgO) composites. Magnetization measurements of these samples show a much larger hysteresis which corresponds to a large critical current density. In addition to the Y-123AgO composites, recently similar suspension effects in other RE-123/AgO, where RE stands for rare-Earth elements, were also observed. Some samples exhibit even stronger flux pinning than that of the Y-123/AgO sample. An interesting observation was that in order to form the composite which exhibits strong flux trapping effect the sintering temperature depends on the particular RE-123 compound used. The paper presents the detailed processing conditions for the formation of these RE-123/AgO composites, as well as the magnetization and critical field data

MICROFRACTURE OF HUMAN THORACOLUMBAR VERTEBRAL BODY UNDER FATIGUE LOADING

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between lumbar vertebral microfracture and fatigue loading on young human spine under physiological cyclic compression loads. Thirty-three thoracolumbar vertebrae (T12 to L4) were obtained from 7 adult Chinese male cadavers. They were randomly divided into 5 groups. Cyclical compression was performed for 20,000 cycles with 2 Hz. Load magnitude was determined respectively as 10%, 20% and 30% of the ultimate compressive load. Four cylindrical sections were obtained from each vertebra and the cross-sectional slides were made. The histomorphometry was used to determine microfracture densitiy and distribution. No fracture was detected in the radiographs of groups III, IV and V after fatigue load. Microfracture density in the cyclic compression group increased from 0.46 #/mm2 in Group III to 0.66 #/mm2 (Group IV) and 0.94 #/mm2 (Group V) under different loading levels (). These results provide evidence for the existence of microfractures caused by fatigue loads that are undetectable by X-ray

Design and fabrication of 3D-printed anatomically shaped lumbar cage for intervertebra disc (IVD) degeneration treatment

    Get PDF
Spinal fusion is the gold standard surgical procedure for degenerative spinal conditions when conservative therapies have been unsuccessful in rehabilitation of patients. Novel strategies are required to improve biocompatibility and osseointegration of traditionally used materials for lumbar cages. Furthermore, new design and technologies are needed to bridge the gap due to the shortage of optimal implant sizes to fill the intervertebral disc defect. Within this context, additive manufacturing technology presents an excellent opportunity to fabricate ergonomic shape medical implants. The goal of this study is to design and manufacture a 3D-printed lumbar cage for lumbar interbody fusion. Optimisations of the proposed implant design and its printing parameters were achieved via in silico analysis. The final construct was characterised via scanning electron microscopy, contact angle, x-ray micro computed tomography (Ī¼CT), atomic force microscopy, and compressive test. Preliminary in vitro cell culture tests such as morphological assessment and metabolic activities were performed to access biocompatibility of 3D-printed constructs. Results of in silico analysis provided a useful platform to test preliminary cage design and to find an optimal value of filling density for 3D printing process. Surface characterisation confirmed a uniform coating of nHAp with nanoscale topography. Mechanical evaluation showed mechanical properties of final cage design similar to that of trabecular bone. Preliminary cell culture results showed promising results in terms of cell growth and activity confirming biocompatibility of constructs. Thus for the first time, design optimisation based on computational and experimental analysis combined with the 3D-printing technique for intervertebral fusion cage has been reported in a single study. 3D-printing is a promising technique for medical applications and this study paves the way for future development of customised implants in spinal surgical applications

Negative permittivity derived from inductive characteristic in the percolating Cu/EP metacomposites

    Get PDF
Recently, increasing attention has been concentrated on negative permittivity with the development of the emerging metamaterials composed of periodic array structures. However, taking facile preparation into consideration, it is important to achieve negative permittivity behavior based on materialsā€™ intrinsic properties rather than their artificially periodic structures. In this paper, we proposed to fabricate the percolating composites with copper dispersed in epoxy (EP) resin by a polymerization method to realize the negative permittivity behavior. When Cu content in the composites reached to 80ā€Æwt%, the conductivity abruptly went up by three orders of magnitudes, suggesting a percolation behavior. Below the percolation threshold, the conductivity spectra conform to Jonscherā€™s power law; when the Cu/EP composites reached to percolating state, the conductivity gradually reduced in high frequency region due to the skin effect. It is indicated that the conductive mechanism changed from hopping conduction to electron conduction. In addition, the permittivity did not increase monotonously with the increase of Cu content in the vicinity of percolation threshold, due to the presence of leakage current. Meanwhile, the negative permittivity conforming to Drude model was observed above the percolation threshold. Further investigation revealed that there was a constitutive relationship between the permittivity and the reactance. When conductive fillers are slightly above the percolation threshold, the inductive characteristic derived from conductive percolating network leads to the negative permittivity. Such epsilon-negative materials can potentially be applied in novel electrical devices, such as high-power microwave filters, stacked capacitors, negative capacitance field effect transistors and coil-free resonators. In addition, the design strategy based on percolating composites provides an approach to epsilon-negative materials
