Kings and Courtesans: A Study of the Pictorial Representation of French Royal Mistresses

This thesis explores the development in the pictorial representation of four important French royal mistresses. It looks at works depicting Agnès Sorel, mistress to Charles VII; Diane de Poitiers, mistress to Henri II; Gabrielle d’Estrées, mistress to Henri IV; and Madame de Pompadour, mistress to Louis XV. By placing the portrayals of these women within a historical context, it becomes apparent that there are links between the strength of the crown and the depictions of the mistresses. This thesis traces the development of the imagery associated with these women and demonstrates that as the crown became more and more powerful, the portraits of the kings’ mistresses became bolder and less disguised

COMMENT PRENDRE UNE AUTRE FORME : UNE ÉTUDE SUR LA TRADUCTION ANGLAISE ET LA VERSION CINÉMATOGRAHIQUE DU ROMAN BAISE-MOI DE VIRGINIE DESPENTES

Cette étude examine l’importance du roman Baise-moi de Virginie Despentes, illustrant le caractère féministe de l’œuvre de Despentes. L’étude utilise le manifeste de Despentes, King Kong Théorie, pour mieux comprendre les thèmes (le viol, la pornographie et la prostitution) et le fond de Baise-moi. Cette thèse demande au lecteur de considérer la violence représentée dans le roman de plus près. Elle argumente que cette violence n’est pas simplement gratuite ; elle est une force destructrice face à la société patriarcale. Après avoir analysé Baise-moi cette étude s’ouvre à la question de la traduction. Elle considère plusieurs théories de traduction avancées par Walter Benjamin, Vladimir Nabokov et Thomas H. Jackson pour ensuite étudier la traduction anglaise ainsi que l’adaptation cinématographique. Cette thèse tente finalement de découvrir comment le traducteur et les réalisatrices ont essayé de transmettre les thèmes et le ton de l’original sous une autre forme
