Anderson Localization from Berry-Curvature Interchange in Quantum Anomalous Hall System

We theoretically investigate the localization mechanism of the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) in the presence of spin-flip disorders. We show that the QAHE keeps quantized at weak disorders, then enters a Berry-curvature mediated metallic phase at moderate disorders, and finally goes into the Anderson insulating phase at strong disorders. From the phase diagram, we find that at the charge neutrality point although the QAHE is most robust against disorders, the corresponding metallic phase is much easier to be localized into the Anderson insulating phase due to the \textit{interchange} of Berry curvatures carried respectively by the conduction and valence bands. At the end, we provide a phenomenological picture related to the topological charges to better understand the underlying physical origin of the QAHE Anderson localization.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

Induction of APOBEC3 family proteins, a defensive maneuver underlying interferon-induced anti–HIV-1 activity

Apolipoprotein B mRNA-editing enzyme-catalytic polypeptide-like 3G (APOBEC3G), a cytidine deaminase, is a recently recognized innate intracellular protein with lethal activity against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Packaged into progeny virions, APOBEC3G enzymatic activity leads to HIV DNA degradation. As a counterattack, HIV virion infectivity factor (Vif) targets APOBEC3G for proteasomal proteolysis to exclude it from budding virions. Based on the ability of APOBEC3G to antagonize HIV infection, considerable interest hinges on elucidating its mechanism(s) of regulation. In this study, we provide the first evidence that an innate, endogenous host defense factor has the potential to promote APOBEC3G and rebuke the virus-mediated attempt to control its cellular host. We identify interferon (IFN)-α as a potent inducer of APOBEC3G to override HIV Vif neutralization of APOBEC3 proteins that pose a threat to efficient macrophage HIV replication. Our data provide a new dimension by which IFN-α mediates its antiviral activity and suggest a means to render the host nonpermissive for viral replication

An External Calibration Method for Compensating for the Mutual Coupling Effect in Large Interferometric Aperture Synthesis Radiometers

This paper deals with the antenna mutual coupling effect in interferometric aperture synthesis radiometers (IASRs), which degrades the system radiometric performance. First, the conventional mutual impedance (CMI) is adopted to analyze the mutual coupling effect on the performance of IASR and a practical model of the coupled visibilities is developed. Based on the model, an external calibration method is then proposed to compensate for the mutual coupling effect. In this method, the measured visibilities are decoupled through the difference measurement between the original scene and a naturally occurring reference scene. Compared to the previous methods, the proposed method requires no extra additional hardware cost and has easier implementation and, therefore, fits for the large interferometric array radiometers. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method
