[C II] emission and star formation in late-type galaxies. II A model
We study the relationship between gas cooling via the [C II] (158 micron)
line emission and dust cooling via the far-IR continuum emission on the global
scale of a galaxy in normal (i.e. non-AGN dominated and non-starburst)
late-type systems. It is known that the luminosity ratio of total gas and dust
cooling, L(C II)/L(FIR), shows a non-linear behaviour with the equivalent width
of the Halpha line emission, the ratio decreasing in galaxies of lower massive
star-formation activity. This result holds despite the fact that known
individual Galactic and extragalactic sources of the [C II] line emission show
different [C II] line-to-far-IR continuum emission ratios. This non-linear
behaviour is reproduced by a simple quantitative model of gas and dust heating
from different stellar populations, assuming that the photoelectric effect on
dust, induced by far-UV photons, is the dominant mechanism of gas heating in
the general diffuse interstellar medium of the galaxies under investigation.
According to the model, the global L(C II)/L(FIR) provides a direct measure of
the fractional amount of non-ionizing UV light in the interstellar radiation
field and not of the efficiency of the photoelectric heating. The model also
defines a method to constrain the stellar initial mass function from
measurements of L(C II) and L(FIR). A sample of 20 Virgo cluster galaxies
observed in the [C II] line with the LWS on board ISO is used to illustrate the
model. The limited statistics and the necessary assumptions behind the
determination of the global [C II] luminosities from the spatially limited data
do not allow us to establish definitive conclusions but data-sets available in
the future will allow tests of both the reliability of the assumptions of our

Identification of three stage-specific proteinases of Plasmodium falciparum.
We have identified and characterized three stage-specific proteinases of Plasmodium falciparum that are active at neutral pH. We analyzed ring-, trophozoite-, schizont-, and merozoite-stage parasites by gelatin substrate PAGE and characterized the identified proteinases with class-specific proteinase inhibitors. No proteinase activity was detected with rings. Trophozoites had a 28 kD proteinase that was inhibited by inhibitors of cysteine proteinases. Mature schizonts had a 35-40 kD proteinase that also was inhibited by cysteine proteinase inhibitors. Merozoite fractions had a 75 kD proteinase that was inhibited by serine proteinase inhibitors. The stage-specific activity of these proteinases and the correlation between the effects of proteinase inhibitors on the isolated enzymes with the effects of the inhibitors on whole parasites suggest potential critical functions for these proteinases in the life cycle of malaria parasites
Artifacts at 4.5 and 8.0 um in Short Wavelength Spectra from the Infrared Space Observatory
Spectra from the Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) on ISO exhibit artifacts
at 4.5 and 8 um. These artifacts appear in spectra from a recent data release,
OLP 10.0, as spurious broad emission features in the spectra of stars earlier
than ~F0, such as alpha CMa. Comparison of absolutely calibrated spectra of
standard stars to corresponding spectra from the SWS reveals that these
artifacts result from an underestimation of the strength of the CO and SiO
molecular bands in the spectra of sources used as calibrators by the SWS.
Although OLP 10.0 was intended to be the final data release, these findings
have led to an additional release addressing this issue, OLP 10.1, which

Cluster Populations in A115 and A2283
This paper presents four color narrow-band photometry of clusters A115
() and A2283 () in order to follow the star formation history
of various galaxy types. Although located at similar redshifts, the two
clusters display very different fractions of blue galaxies (i.e. the
Butcher-Oemler effect, for A115, for A2283). A system
of photometric classification is applied to the cluster members that divides
the cluster population into four classes based on their recent levels of star
formation. It is shown that the blue population of each cluster is primarily
composed of normal starforming (SFR < 1 M_{\sun} yrs) galaxies at the
high luminosity end, but with an increasing contribution from a dwarf starburst
population below . This dwarf starburst population appears to be
the same population of low mass galaxies identified in recent HST imaging (Koo
et al 1997), possible progenitors to present-day cluster dwarf ellipticals,
irregulars and BCD's. Deviations in the color-magnitude relationship for the
red galaxies in each cluster suggest that a population of blue S0's is evolving
into present-day S0 colors at this epoch. The radial distribution of the blue
population supports the prediction of galaxy harassment mechanisms for tidally

An assessment of the strength of knots and splices used as eye terminations in a sailing environment
Research into knots, splices and other methods of forming an eye termination has been limited, despite the fact that they are essential and strongly affect the performance of a rope. The aim of this study was to carry out a comprehensive initial assessment of the breaking strength of eye terminations commonly used in a sailing environment, thereby providing direction for further work in the field. Supports for use in a regular tensile testing machine were specially developed to allow individual testing of each sample and a realistic spread of statistical data to be obtained. Over 180 break tests were carried out on four knots (the bowline, double bowline, figure-of-eight loop and perfection loop) and two splices (three-strand eye splice and braid-on-braid splice). The factors affecting their strength were investigated. A statistical approach to the analysis of the results was adopted. The type of knot was found to have a significant effect on the strength. This same effect was seen in both types of rope construction (three-strand and braid-on-braid). Conclusions were also drawn as to the effect of splice length, eye size, manufacturer and rope diameter on the breaking strength of splices. Use of a simple pain model to evaluate analgesic activity of ibuprofen versus paracetamol
Objective: To evaluate the analgesic activity of ibuprofen against paracetamol using a simple pain model.Design: A double-blind study.Setting: Twenty general practitioners in Harare, Zimbabwe.Patients: Adults with acute sore throat of a maximum of two daysâ duration.Interventions: One hundred and thirteen patients with acute pain associated with tonsillopharyngitis randomly received either 400mg ibuprofen or 1000mg paracetamol. The study design included repeated administration up to 48 hours to assess tolerability.Main outcome measures: At hourly intervals for six hours after the first dose of treatment, the patients evaluated pain intensity on swallowing, difficulty in swallowing and global pain relief according to visual analogue scales.Results: Ibuprofen 400mg was significantly more effective than paracetamol 1000mg in all three ratings, at all time-points for pain intensity and difficulty in swallowing, and from two hours onwards for pain relief. There were no serious adverse effects and no statisticallysignificant difference in the incidence of adverse effects in the two treatment groups.Conclusions: Sore throat pain provided a sensitive model to assess the analgesic efficacy of class I analgesics and discriminated between the analgesic efficacy of ibuprofen and paracetamol
Measuring vascular reactivity with breath-holds after stroke: a method to aid interpretation of group-level BOLD signal changes in longitudinal fMRI studies
Blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) contrast functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a widely used technique to map brain function, and to monitor its recovery after stroke. Since stroke has a vascular etiology, the neurovascular coupling between cerebral blood flow and neural activity may be altered, resulting in uncertainties when interpreting longitudinal BOLD signal changes. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the feasibility of using a recently validated breath-hold task in patients with stroke, both to assess group level changes in cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) and to determine if alterations in regional CVR over time will adversely affect interpretation of task-related BOLD signal changes. Three methods of analyzing the breath-hold data were evaluated. The CVR measures were compared over healthy tissue, infarcted tissue and the peri-infarct tissue, both sub-acutely (âŒ2 weeks) and chronically (âŒ4 months). In this cohort, a lack of CVR differences in healthy tissue between the patients and controls indicates that any group level BOLD signal change observed in these regions over time is unlikely to be related to vascular alterations. CVR was reduced in the peri-infarct tissue but remained unchanged over time. Therefore, although a lack of activation in this region compared with the controls may be confounded by a reduced CVR, longitudinal group-level BOLD changes may be more confidently attributed to neural activity changes in this cohort. By including this breath-hold-based CVR assessment protocol in future studies of stroke recovery, researchers can be more assured that longitudinal changes in BOLD signal reflect true alterations in neural activity
Arp 302: Non-starburst Luminous Infrared Galaxies
Arp 302, a luminous infrared source (L_{IR} = 4.2x10^{11} Lsun), consisting
of two spiral galaxies (VV340A and VV340B) with nuclear separation of 40'', has
the highest CO luminosity known. Observations with the BIMA array at 5'' X 7''
resolution reveal that the CO emission is extended over 23.0 kpc in the edge-on
spiral galaxy, VV340A, corresponding to 6.7x10^{10} Msun of H_2. In the
companion face-on galaxy, VV340B, the CO emission is extended over ~10.0 kpc,
with 1.1x10^{10} Msun of H_2. The large CO extent is in strong contrast to
starburst systems, such as Arp 220, in which the CO extent is typically 1
kpc. Furthermore, (H_2) is found to be 6.0 Lsun/Msun throughout
both galaxies. Thus the high IR luminosity of Arp 302 is apparently not due to
starbursts in the nuclear regions, but is due to its unusually large amount of
molecular gas forming stars at a rate similar to giant molecular clouds in the
Milky Way disk. Arp 302 consists of a pair of very gas-rich spiral galaxies

The IRAS 1-Jy Survey of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies: I. The sample and Luminosity Function
A complete flux-limited sample of 118 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs)
has been identified from the IRAS Faint Source Catalog (FSC). The selection
criteria were a 60 micron flux density greater than 1 Jy in a region of the sky
delta > -40 deg, |b| > 30 deg. All sources were subsequently reprocessed using
coadded IRAS maps in order to obtain the best available flux estimates in all
four IRAS wavelength bands. The maximum observed infrared luminosity is L_ir =
10^{12.90} L_{sun}, and the maximum redshift is z = 0.268. The luminosity
function for ULIGs over the decade luminosity range L_ir = 10^{12} - 10^{13}
L_{sun} can be approximated by a power law Phi (L) ~= L^{-2.35} Mpc^{-3}
mag^{-1}. In the local Universe z < 0.1, the space density of ULIGs appears to
be comparable to or slightly larger than that of optically selected QSOs at
comparable bolometric luminosities. A maximum likelihood test suggests strong
evolution for our sample; assuming density evolution proportional to
(1+z)^{alpha} we find alpha = 7.6+/-3.2. Examination of the two-point
correlation function shows a barely significant level of clustering, xi (r) =
