Lifelong learning : issues of effective implementation
Lifelong Learning is becoming more important as the median age of the world and the pace
of change continues to increase. It has become part of key national development strategy to
update and upgrade the knowledge of its citizen to meet the challenges of globalization. This
paper reviews the goals and process of lifelong learning, which may be academic or nonacademic,
pre-employment or post-employment, formal, semi-formal or informal. It then
examines the deployment of modern information communication technology (ICT), and its
effects of accelerating the life-long learning process. Among the modes of delivery, the
authors contended that Open and Distance Learning (ODL) with blended mode of delivery is
perhaps the most effective means of implementing lifelong learning. The issues of
assessment and accreditation, especially the validation and recognition of informal learning
remain one of the main obstacles to the implementation of lifelong learning. (Authors' abstract
Renormalization Effects in a Dilute Bose Gas
The low-density expansion for a homogeneous interacting Bose gas at zero
temperature can be formulated as an expansion in powers of ,
where is the number density and is the S-wave scattering length.
Logarithms of appear in the coefficients of the expansion. We show
that these logarithms are determined by the renormalization properties of the
effective field theory that describes the scattering of atoms at zero density.

Three-Neutrino Mixing and Combined Vacuum Oscillations and MSW Transitions of Solar Neutrinos
Assuming three flavour neutrino mixing takes place in vacuum, we investigate
the possibility that the solar nu_e take part in MSW transitions in the Sun due
to Delta m^2_{31} from 10^{-7} eV^2 to 10^{-4} eV^2, followed by long wave
length vacuum oscillations on the way to the Earth, triggered by Delta m^2_{21}
(or Delta m^2_{32}) from 10^{-12} eV^2 to 10^{-10} eV^2, Delta m^2_{31} and
Delta m^2_{21} (Delta m^2_{32}) being the corresponding neutrino mass squared
differences. The solar nu_e survival probability is shown to be described in
this case by a simple analytic expression. Depending on whether the vacuum
oscillations are due to Delta m^2_{21} or Delta m^2_{32} there are two very
different types of interplay between the MSW transitions and the vacuum
oscillations of the solar nu_e. Performing an analysis of the most recently
published solar neutrino data we have found several qualitatively new solutions
of the solar neutrino problem of the hybrid MSW transitions + vacuum
oscillations type. The solutions differ in the way the pp, 7Be and 8B neutrino
fluxes are affected by the transitions in the Sun and the oscillations in

A detailed study on the accumulation of aerial heavy metals by the moss, Calymperes delessertii
Besch. was conducted. Heavy metals studied were Zn, Cd, Ni, Fe, Mn, Pb and Cu. The suitability
of the moss as a bioindicatoT to these aerial metals was also discussed
Finite size scaling in the 2D XY-model and generalized universality
In recent works (BHP), a generalized universality has been proposed, linking
phenomena as dissimilar as 2D magnetism and turbulence. To test these ideas, we
performed a MC study of the 2D XY-model. We found that the shape of the
probability distribution function for the magnetization M is non Gaussian and
independent of the system size --in the range of the lattice sizes studied--
below the Kosterlitz-Thoules temperature. However, the shape of these
distributions does depend on the temperature, contrarily to the BHP's claim.
This behavior is successfully explained by using an extended finite-size

Job performance and mediating role of employee retention in private Institutions of Higher Education
Higher education is no longer an option but a necessity. Private Higher Education Institutions (PHEIs) in Malaysia is a destination for both local and international students, in which the focus is on creation on knowledge workers for the country. The number of PHEIs and student enrolment increases yearly as spaces in the public universities are scarce. For quality assurance, high staff turnover has always been a concern in PHEIs. Hence, the purpose of this study is to explore the factors affecting job performance and the mediating effect of employee engagement for both academic and non-academic staff. A quantitative, self-administered questionnaire was used in this research. 200 respondents from the top ten PHEIs participated in this study. Career development, employee engagement, work-life balance and employee retention were found to have significant relationship with job performance. Hierarchical re- gression analysis proves that employee retention fully mediates the relationship between career development and job performance, as well as work-life balance and job performance. However, there is no mediation effect of employee retention on employee engagement and job performance
Temporal segregation between dung-inhabiting beetle and fly species
The coexistence of ecologically similar species (i.e. species utilizing the same resource) is a major topic in ecology. Communities are assembled either through the biotic interactions of ecologically similar species, e.g. competition, or by the abiotic separation of species along gradients of environmental conditions. Here, we investigated the temporal segregation, succession and seasonality of dung-inhabiting Coleoptera and Diptera that utilize an identical resource in exactly the same way. The data were collected from two temperate pastures, one in the United Kingdom and the second in the Czech Republic. There was no evident temporal separation between ecologically similar coleopterous or dipterous taxa during succession. In contrast, these two orders were almost perfectly separated seasonally in both combined and site-specific datasets. Flies were most abundant in the summer, and beetles were more abundant in the spring and autumn. Ecologically similar beetles and flies also displayed seasonal separation in both combined and site-specific data. Analyses within site-specific data sets revealed such a separation at both the order and species level. Season is therefore the main temporal axis separating ecologically similar species of dung-inhabiting insects in temperate habitats, while succession aggregates species that may have similar environmental tolerances (to e.g. dung moisture). This separation between ecologically similar taxa of beetles and flies may be attributable to either competition-based niche separation or to temperature tolerance-based habitat filtering, since flies have peak activity in warmer months while beetles have peak activity in cooler months

Properties of a Dilute Bose Gas near a Feshbach Resonance
In this paper, properties of a homogeneous Bose gas with a Feshbach resonance
are studied in the dilute region at zero temperature. The stationary state
contains condensations of atoms and molecules. The ratio of the molecule
density to the atom density is . There are two types of excitations,
molecular excitations and atomic excitations. Atomic excitations are gapless,
consistent with the traditional theory of a dilute Bose gas. The molecular
excitation energy is finite in the long wavelength limit as observed in recent
experiments on Rb. In addition, the decay process of the condensate is
studied. The coefficient of the three-body recombination rate is about 140
times larger than that of a Bose gas without a Feshbach resonance, in

Quasi-Periodic Releases of Streamer Blobs and Velocity Variability of the Slow Solar Wind near the Sun
We search for persistent and quasi-periodic release events of streamer blobs
during 2007 with the Large Angle Spectrometric Coronagraph on the \textit{Solar
and Heliospheric Observatory} and assess the velocity of the slow solar wind
along the plasma sheet above the corresponding streamer by measuring the
dynamic parameters of blobs. We find 10 quasi-periodic release events of
streamer blobs lasting for three to four days. In each day of these events, we
observe three-five blobs. The results are in line with previous studies using
data observed near the last solar minimum. Using the measured blob velocity as
a proxy for that of the mean flow, we suggest that the velocity of the
background slow solar wind near the Sun can vary significantly within a few
hours. This provides an observational manifestation of the large velocity
