    Content Analysis of Acculturation Research in Counseling and Counseling Psychology: A 22-Year Review

    The authors conducted a 22-year (1988–2009) content analysis of quantitative empirical research that included acculturation and/or enculturation as a study variable(s). A total of 138 studies in 134 articles were systematically evaluated from 5 major American Psychological Association and American Counseling Association journals in counseling and counseling psychology, including Journal of Counseling Psychology, The Counseling Psychologist, Journal of Counseling and Development, Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development, and Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology. To guide the analysis, the authors conceptualized acculturation/enculturation as a “bilinear” (i.e., developing cultural orientations to both majority and ethnic cultures) and “multidimensional” (i.e., across multiple areas such as behaviors, values, identity, and knowledge) cultural socialization process that occurs in interaction with “social contexts” (e.g., home, school, work, West Coast, Midwest). Findings include the patterns and trends of acculturation/enculturation research in (a) conceptualization and use of acculturation/enculturation variable(s), (b) research designs (e.g., sample characteristics, instruments, data collection, and analysis methods), (c) content areas, and (d) changes in total publications and trends over time. Additionally, meta-analyses were conducted on the relationship of acculturation/enculturation and a few key variables of mental health, adjustment, and well-being. Major findings and directions for future research are discussed

    Morphology Of A Sanguinicolid Blood Fluke, Sanguinicola Armata, In Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon Idella C. V.) Fingerlings And Its Prevalence

    Sanguinicola armata Plehn, 1905 is redescribed under light and Nomarski microscopy and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). It is a lanceolate sanguinicolid with a single column of heavy lateral marginal spines; extensive vitellaria; long oesophagus and an X-shaped intestine with five-lobed caeca. There are 9-10 pairs of testes; median; post intestinal caeca and a single butterfly-shaped ovary. Male and female genital pores lie adjacent to each other, near to the posterior extremity. The uterus is short, post ovarian and contains only one egg.SEM study revealed minute, blunt spines at the posterior part of the proboscis and tiny posteriorly directed marginal spines at the posterior end which were not visible under the ordinary light and Nomarski microscopy. This had added extra taxonomical features to S. armata. Surface morphology of S. armata under SEM also showed many tegumental folds with ridges and crest, cilium-like structure and sensory papillae which may be related to their nutritional, sensory, excretory, secretory, osmoregulatory and immunological functions. Protrusion of the genital pores viewed under SEM helps to understand the fact that cross-fertilisation as being a rule in the trematodes' reproduction. The prevalence rate of infection of S. armata was found to be high (66.7%) in the locally produced grass carp (Ctenopharygodon idella) fingerlings in the farm under the present study. This was attributed to the abundance of aquatic snails which act as intermediate hosts of the fluke. However, the intensity of infection was low due to the host (immunological), environmental (stocking density and water chemistry) and parasite (reproductive biology) factors. Since the distribution of S. armata was highest (87.8%) in the bulbous arteriosus, it should be examined first for quick diagnosis of the fluke

    It is still common today to see questionnaires with Likert Scale items concerning very different variables being used to capture data on aspects as varied as possible that are to be investigated by the research work. This is perfectly alright if each of the questions is to be treated as standing on its own and is not intended to add up to a measure of a single variable. This, however, has the problem of inadequate sampling of items to come to any meaningful measure of persons on that set of multiple variables, with as small a Standard Error of Measurement (SEM) as possible. Each variable to be measured is best put on a single rating scale, with items being replicated a sufficient number of times to reduce the SEM. There can be more than one rating scale in one questionnaire, but they should obviously be placed in separate sections, and their analyses done separately. This paper discusses a specific example of the measurement of attitude towards teaching and perceptions of subjects’ own teaching knowledge and skills, and how to measure their changes over time, through the anchoring of item calibrations, using a Rasch model

    Transport phenomenology for a holon-spinon fluid

    We propose that the normal-state transport in the cuprate superconductors can be understood in terms of a two-fluid model of spinons and holons. In our scenario, the resistivity is determined by the properties of the holons while magnetotransport involves the recombination of holons and spinons to form physical electrons. Our model implies that the Hall transport time is a measure of the electron lifetime, which is shorter than the longitudinal transport time. This agrees with our analysis of the normal-state data. We predict a strong increase in linewidth with increasing temperature in photoemission.     The thermal Hall effect of spin excitations in a Kagome magnet

    At low temperatures, the thermal conductivity of spin excitations in a magnetic insulator can exceed that of phonons. However, because they are charge neutral, the spin waves are not expected to display a thermal Hall effect in a magnetic field. Recently, this semiclassical notion has been upended in quantum magnets in which the spin texture has a finite chirality. In the Kagome lattice, the chiral term generates a Berry curvature. This results in a thermal Hall conductivity κxy\kappa_{xy} that is topological in origin. Here we report observation of a large κxy\kappa_{xy} in the Kagome magnet Cu(1-3, bdc) which orders magnetically at 1.8 K. The observed κxy\kappa_{xy} undergoes a remarkable sign-reversal with changes in temperature or magnetic field, associated with sign alternation of the Chern flux between magnon bands. We show that thermal Hall experiments probe incisively the effect of Berry curvature on heat transport.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

    Image-based oil palm leaf disease detection using convolutional neural network

    Over the years, numerous studies have been conducted on the integration of computer vision and machine learning in plant disease detection. However, these conventional machine learning methods often require the contour segmentation of the infected region from the entire leaf region and the manual extraction of different discriminative features before the classification models can be developed. In this study, deep learning models, specifically, the AlexNet convolutional neural network (CNN) and the combination of AlexNet and support vector machine (AlexNet-SVM), which overcome the limitation of handcrafting of feature representation were implemented for oil palm leaf disease identification. The images of healthy and infected leaf samples were collected, resized, and renamed before the model training. These images were directly used to fit the classification models, without the need for segmentation and feature extraction as in the conventional machine learning methods. The optimal architecture of AlexNet CNN and AlexNet-SVM models were then determined and subsequently applied for the oil palm leaf disease identification. Comparative studies showed that the overall performance of the AlexNet CNN model outperformed AlexNet-SVM-based classifier
