    Theory of phase segregation in DNA assemblies containing two different base pair sequence types

    Spontaneous pairing of homologous DNA sequences – a challenging subject in molecular biophysics, often referred to as ‘homology recognition’ – ha s been observed in vitro for several DNA system s a . One of th e se experiments involved liquid crystalline quasi - columnar phases formed by a mixture of two kinds of oligo mer of double stranded DNA . Both oligomer types were of the same length and identical stoichiometric base - pair composition , but the base - pairs followed a different order . Phase segregation of the two DNA types was observed in the experiments , wit h the formation of boundaries between domai ns rich in molecules of one type (order) of base pair sequence . We formulate here a modified ‘ X - Y model ’ for phase segregation in such assemblies , obtain approximate solutions of the model , compare analytical results to Monte Carlo simulations, and rationalize past experimental observations . This study, furthermore , reveals the factors that affect the degree of segregat ion . Such information c ould be used in planning new versions of similar segregation experiments , needed for deepen i ng our understanding of forces that might be involved , e.g., in gene - gene recognition

    In this work, the influence of the yield function on finite element (FE) forming simulation results for two auto-body panels, hood inner and door outer, was investigated. Simulations were conducted with different yield functions, Hill's1948. Yld91 and Yld2000-2d, which are available in the PAM-STAMP and LS-DYNA commercial codes.     Dynamics of the formation of a hydrogel by a pathogenic amyloid peptide: islet amyloid polypeptide

    Many chronic degenerative diseases result from aggregation of misfolded polypeptides to form amyloids. Many amyloidogenic polypeptides are surfactants and their assembly can be catalysed by hydrophobic-hydrophilic interfaces (an air-water interface in-vitro or membranes in-vivo). We recently demonstrated the specificity of surface-induced amyloidogenesis but the mechanisms of amyloidogenesis and more specifically of adsorption at hydrophobic-hydrophilic interfaces remain poorly understood. Thus, it is critical to determine how amyloidogenic polypeptides behave at interfaces. Here we used surface tensiometry, rheology and electron microscopy to demonstrate the complex dynamics of gelation by full-length human islet amyloid polypeptide (involved in type II diabetes) both in the bulk solution and at hydrophobic-hydrophilic interfaces (air-water interface and phospholipids). We show that the hydrogel consists of a 3D supramolecular network of fibrils. We also assessed the role of solvation and dissected the evolution over time of the assembly processes.     Kondo Insulator description of spin state transition in FeSb2

    The thermal expansion and heat capacity of FeSb2 at ambient pressure agrees with a picture of a temperature induced spin state transition within the Fe t_{2g} multiplet. However, high pressure powder diffraction data show no sign of a structural phase transition up to 7GPa. A bulk modulus B=84(3)GPa has been extracted and the temperature dependence of the Gruneisen parameter has been determined. We discuss here the relevance of a Kondo insulator description for this material.Comment: Physical Review B in press (2005

    A large-aperture strip-grid beam splitter for partially combined two millimeter-wave diagnostics on Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research

    A large-aperture beam splitter has been developed for simultaneous operation of two millimeter-wave diagnostics employing different probe beams in the frequency and polarization, microwave imaging reflectometer (???85 GHz X-mode), and collective scattering system (300 GHz O-mode), on the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research device. The beam splitter was designed based on a polarizer concept (i.e., grid of metal strips on a thin dielectric sheet), and this can be an optimal solution for these two diagnostics. Fabrication of the strips with uniform sub-millimeter width and spacing on a large dielectric sheet was achieved with an etching technique, and the laboratory test results on the reflection and transmission ratio are in good agreement with design values

    Objective evaluation of recreational facilities: Development and reliability of the Recreational Facility Audit Tool

    The characteristics of recreational facilities are determinants of facility use and physical activity, yet there are few validated and extensive audit tools gauging characteristics of recreational facilities. This study aimed to describe the development of a 111-item audit tool that objectively evaluates the characteristics of recreational facilities across 10 domains, including the availability of sports facilities, accessibility to the facility, availability of supportive amenities, conditions of changing rooms, conditions of toilets, management, policy, environmental safety, aesthetics, and social environment. The intra- and inter-rater reliability indices of the audit tool were also examined. In the intra-rater reliability tests, 20 recreational facilities were examined twice by the same auditor, with one week apart between each audit. The inter-rater reliability was assessed using data from 20 recreational facilities that were examined twice by two independent auditors. Kappa statistics, percent agreement and intra-class correlation coefficients were computed. The average intra- and inter-rater percent agreement was 96.9% and 90.6% respectively. The majority of items (n=107 and 101) showed either good percent agreement or acceptable kappa values in the intra- and interreliability tests respectively. The overall intra- and inter-rater reliability of the audit tool was acceptable. Subjective and time-sensitive audit items may need clearer descriptions and multiple repeated measures to improve their reliability. The audit tool can be used to reliably assess indoor sports centres, parks, sports grounds, playgrounds and swimming pools. The objective data collected by this audit tool would contribute to the understanding of relationships between characteristics of recreational facilities, usage and physical activity.published_or_final_versio

    Effect of Nonlinear Multi-axial Elasticity and Anisotropic Plasticity on Quasi-static Dent Properties of Automotive Steel Sheets

    This study investigates the influence of the elasto-plastic properties of automotive steel sheets on the denting behavior and suggests a constitutive modeling approach for reliable dent analysis. The stress strain behaviors of three kinds of steel sheets were measured in uniaxial tension, in-plane biaxial tension and forward-reverse simple shear tests. Advanced constitutive models were employed to capture the plastic anisotropy, reverse loading characteristics such as the Bauschinger effect, and elastic modulus degradation. In particular, the biaxial elastic modulus and its degradation behavior were measured and implemented in the constitutive model. The suggested model significantly improved the prediction of dents compared to the conventional model in terms of the load-displacement curve. Sensitivity studies on the constitutive model demonstrated that mainly plastic anisotropy and elastic behavior of a material influence the panel stiffness, whereas the reverse loading behavior strongly affects the permanent dent depth.     Dynamic Limits on Planar Libration-Orbit Coupling Around an Oblate Primary

    This paper explores the dynamic properties of the planar system of an ellipsoidal satellite in an equatorial orbit about an oblate primary. In particular, we investigate the conditions for which the satellite is bound in librational motion or when the satellite will circulate with respect to the primary. We find the existence of stable equilibrium points about which the satellite can librate, and explore both the linearized and non-linear dynamics around these points. Absolute bounds are placed on the phase space of the libration-orbit coupling through the use of zero-velocity curves that exist in the system. These zero-velocity curves are used to derive a sufficient condition for when the satellite's libration is bound to less than 90 degrees. When this condition is not satisfied so that circulation of the satellite is possible, the initial conditions at zero libration angle are determined which lead to circulation of the satellite. Exact analytical conditions for circulation and the maximum libration angle are derived for the case of a small satellite in orbits of any eccentricity.Comment: Submitted to Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronom

    Josephson effects in MgB2 meta masked ion damage junctions

    Ion beam damage combined with nanoscale focused ion beam direct milling was used to create manufacturable SNS type Josephson junctions in 100 nm thick MgB2_{2} with TC_{C} of 38 K. The junctions show non-hysteretic current - voltage characteristics between 36 and 4.2 K. Experimental evidence for the dc and ac Josephson effects in MgB2_{2} metal masked ion damage junctions are presented. This technique is particularly useful for prototyping devices due to its simplicity and flexibility of fabrication and has a great potential for high-density integration.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, RevTeX4, submitted to AP
