    Quasiphantom categories on a family of surfaces isogenous to a higher product

    We construct exceptional collections of line bundles of maximal length 4 on S=(CƗD)/GS=(C \times D)/G which is a surface isogenous to a higher product with pg=q=0p_g=q=0 where G=G(32,27)G=G(32,27) is a finite group of order 32 having number 27 in the list of Magma library.     Gender and Measuring-position Differences in the Radial Pulse of Healthy Individuals

    AbstractIn this research, radial pulse differences according to gender and measuring positions in healthy individuals were investigated in an objective manner. A total of 372 healthy volunteers (189 males and 183 females) participated in this study. The radial pulse was measured at six different measuring positions using a multistep tonometry system. The pulse data were compared between males and females and between different measuring positions. Compared to the pulses in females, those in males were deeper and slower, with a longer diastolic proportion and a shorter systolic proportion. Amplitude of the radial pulse increased as it went distal. The pulse was deepest at the Cheock position and shallowest at the Gwan position. Compared to the right pulse, the radial augmentation index was higher and the main peak angle was larger in case of the left pulse. The results of this research show that the radial pulses in healthy individuals differ significantly according to gender and measuring positions

    Massive gravitons dark matter scenario revisited

    We reexamine the massive graviton dark matter scenario (MGCDM) which was recently considered as an alternative to dark energy models. When introducing the native and effective equations of state (EoS), it is shown that there is no phantom phase in the evolution toward the far past.     Characterization of cp3 reveals a new bri1 allele, bri1-120, and the importance of the LRR domain of BRI1 mediating BR signaling

    Abstract Background Since the identification of BRI1 (BRASSINOSTEROID-INSENSITIVE1), a brassinosteroids (BRs) receptor, most of the critical roles of BR in plant development have been assessed using various bri1 mutant alleles. The characterization of individual bri1 mutants has shown that both the extracellular and cytoplasmic domains of BRI1 are important to its proper functioning. Particularly, in the extracellular domain, regions near the 70-amino acid island are known to be critical to BR binding. In comparison, the exact function of the leucine rich-repeats (LRR) region located before the 70-amino acid island domain in the extracellular cellular portion of BRI1 has not yet been described, due to a lack of specific mutant alleles. Results Among the mutants showing altered growth patterns compared to wild type, we further characterized cp3, which displayed defective growth and reduced BR sensitivity. We sequenced the genomic DNA spanning BRI1 in the cp3 and found that cp3 has a point mutation in the region encoding the 13th LRR of BRI1, resulting in a change from serine to phenylalanine (S399F). We renamed it bri1-120. We also showed that overexpression of the wild type BRI1 protein rescued the phenotype of bri1-120. Using a GFP-tagged bri1-120 construct, we detected the bri1-120 protein in the plasma membrane, and showed that the phenotypic defects in the rosette leaves of bri1-301, a kinase-inactive weak allele of BRI1, can be restored by the overexpression of the bri1-120 proteins in bri1-301. We also produced bri1-301 mutants that were wild type in appearance by performing a genetic cross between bri1-301 and bri1-120 plants. Conclusions We identified a new bri1 allele, bri1-120, whose mutation site has not yet been found or characterized. Our results indicated that the extracellular LRR regions before the 70-amino acid island domain of BRI1 are important for the appropriate cellular functioning of BRI1. Also, we confirmed that a successful interallelic complementation occurs between the extracellular domain mutant allele and the cytoplasmic kinase-inactive mutant allele of BRI1 in vivo.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/112486/1/12870_2010_Article_793.pd

    Low estrogen levels and obesity are associated with shorter telomere lengths in pre-and postmenopausal women

    The aim of this study was to determine whether there is an association between leukocyte telomere length (LTL), and estrogen level, oxidative stress, cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in pre-and postmenopausal obese women. Fifty-four obese women (premenopausal, n= 25; postmenopausal, n= 29) were selected to participate in this study. The outcome measurements in the pre-and postmenopausal groups were compared using independent t-tests and Pearson correlation analysis. The estrogen level (P< 0.001), LTL (P< 0.05), high-density lipoprotein level (P< 0.05), and CRF (P< 0.001) were higher in premenopausal women than in postmenopausal women. The body fat percentage (P< 0.05) and triglyceride concentration (P< 0.05) were lower in premenopausal women than in postmenopausal women. There were no significant associations between LTL, CVD risk, CRF, and oxidative stress and antioxidant enzyme activity in premenopausal women. The body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage in postmenopausal women were negatively associated with LTL (P< 0.05). When all women were considered (i.e., both pre-and postmenopause), the BMI, percentage of fat, and waist circumference had a negative association with LTL (P < 0.05), and estrogen levels were positively associated with LTL (P< 0.05). Decreased estrogen levels after menopause, a pivotal factor in the biology of aging, and obesity were more associated with shorter telomere lengths in pre-and postmenopausal women than aerobic capacity and other CVD risk factors

    Dual priming oligonucleotide system for the multiplex detection of respiratory viruses and SNP genotyping of CYP2C19 gene

    Successful PCR starts with proper priming between an oligonucleotide primer and the template DNA. However, the inevitable risk of mismatched priming cannot be avoided in the currently used primer system, even though considerable time and effort are devoted to primer design and optimization of reaction conditions. Here, we report a novel dual priming oligonucleotide (DPO) which contains two separate priming regions joined by a polydeoxyinosine linker. The linker assumes a bubble-like structure which itself is not involved in priming, but rather delineates the boundary between the two parts of the primer. This structure results in two primer segments with distinct annealing properties: a longer 5ā€²-segment that initiates stable priming, and a short 3ā€²-segment that determines target-specific extension. This DPO-based system is a fundamental tool for blocking extension of non-specifically primed templates, and thereby generates consistently high PCR specificity even under less than optimal PCR conditions. The strength and utility of the DPO system are demonstrated here using multiplex PCR and SNP genotyping PCR
