Fiber-diffraction Interferometer using Coherent Fiber Optic Taper
We present a fiber-diffraction interferometer using a coherent fiber optic
taper for optical testing in an uncontrolled environment. We use a coherent
fiber optic taper and a single-mode fiber having thermally-expanded core. Part
of the measurement wave coming from a test target is condensed through a fiber
optic taper and spatially filtered from a single-mode fiber to be reference
wave. Vibration of the cavity between the target and the interferometer probe
is common to both reference and measurement waves, thus the interference fringe
is stabilized in an optical way. Generation of the reference wave is stable
even with the target movement. Focus shift of the input measurement wave is
desensitized by a coherent fiber optic taper
Crosstalk-free Conjugate Networks for Optical Multicast Switching
High-speed photonic switching networks can switch optical signals at the rate
of several terabits per second. However, they suffer from an intrinsic
crosstalk problem when two optical signals cross at the same switch element. To
avoid crosstalk, active connections must be node-disjoint in the switching
network. In this paper, we propose a sequence of decomposition and merge
operations, called conjugate transformation, performed on each switch element
to tackle this problem. The network resulting from this transformation is
called conjugate network. By using the numbering-schemes of networks, we prove
that if the route assignments in the original network are link-disjoint, their
corresponding ones in the conjugate network would be node-disjoint. Thus,
traditional nonblocking switching networks can be transformed into
crosstalk-free optical switches in a routine manner. Furthermore, we show that
crosstalk-free multicast switches can also be obtained from existing
nonblocking multicast switches via the same conjugate transformation.Comment: 10 page
ABJM Amplitudes in U-gauge and a Soft Theorem
We report progress in computing and analyzing all tree amplitudes in ABJM
theory. Inspired by the isomorphism between the orthogonal Grassmannian and the
pure spinor geometries, we adopt a new gauge, called u-gauge, for evaluating
the orthogonal Grassmannian integral for ABJM amplitudes. We carry out the
integral explicitly for the 8-point amplitude and obtain the complete
supersymmetric amplitude. The physical and spurious poles arise from the
integral as expected from on-shell diagrams. We also derive a double scalar
soft theorem of ABJM amplitudes and verify it for known amplitudes.Comment: 35 pages, 6 figures; v2. minor correction
On the Polarization of H-alpha Lines Scattered by Neutral Hydrogen in Active Galactic Nuclei
Raman scattering by atomic hydrogen converts the UV continuum around
Ly into optical continuum around H, and the basic atomic physics
has been discussed in several works on symbiotic stars. We propose that the
same process may operate in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and calculate the
linear polarization of the broad emission lines Raman-scattered by a high
column neutral hydrogen compnent. The conversion efficiency of the Raman
scattering process is discussed and the expected scattered flux is computed
using the spectral energy distribution of an AGN given by a typical power law.
The high column H {\sc i} component in AGN is suggested by many observations
encompassing radio through UV and X-ray ranges. When the neutral hydrogen
component with a column density is present around the
active nucleus, it is found that the scattered H is characterized by a
very broad width and that the strength of the polarized flux
is comparable to that of the electron-scattered flux expected from a
conventional unified model of narrow line AGN. The width of the scattered flux
is mainly determined by the column density of the neutral scatterers where the
total scattering optical depth becomes of order unity. The asymmetry in the
Raman scattering cross section around Ly introduces red asymmetric
polarized profiles around H. The effects of the blended Ly and O
{\sc vi} 1034 doublet are also investigated. We briefly discuss the
spectropolarimetric observations performed on the Seyfert galaxy IRAS
