High performance liquid crystal displays with a low dielectric constant material
We report high performance liquid crystal displays (LCDs), including fringe field switching (p-FFS) and in-plane switching (p-IPS), with a small average dielectric constant (epsilon) but positive dielectric anisotropy material. Our low e based p-FFS and p-IPS LCDs offer several attractive properties, such as high transmittance, low operation voltage, fast response time (even at -20 degrees C), which is particularly desirable for outdoor applications of mobile or wearable display devices, and suppressed flexoelectric effect. Combining these advantages with the inherent outstanding features, such as wide viewing angle, no grayscale inversion, negligible color shift, and pressure resistance, the low e LC based p-FFS and p-IPS are strong contenders for next-generation mobile displays, and high resolution and high frame rate TVs
A Novel Incisionless Disposable Vaginal Device for Female Stress Urinary Incontinence: Efficacy and Quality of Life
Purpose This clinical study sought to evaluate the possible clinical effectiveness and practicality of URINO, an innovative, incisionless, and disposable intravaginal device, designed for patients suffering from stress urinary incontinence. Methods A prospective, multicenter, single-arm clinical trial was carried out, involving women diagnosed with stress urinary incontinence who used a self-inserted, disposable intravaginal pessary device. Comparisons were made between the results of the 20-minute pad-weight gain (PWG) test at baseline and visit 3, where the device was applied. After 1 week of device usage, compliance, satisfaction, the sensation of a foreign body, and adverse events were assessed. Results Out of 45 participants, 39 completed the trial and expressed satisfaction within the modified intention-to-treat group. The average 20-minute PWG of participants was 17.2Ā±33.6 g at baseline and significantly dropped to 5.3Ā±16.2 g at visit 3 with device application. A total of 87.2% of participants exhibited a reduction ratio of PWG by 50% or more, surpassing the clinical trial success benchmark of 76%. The mean compliance was recorded as 76.6%Ā±26.6%, the average visual analogue scale score for patient satisfaction was 6.4Ā±2.6, and the sensation of a foreign body, measured on a 5-point Likert scale, was 3.1Ā±1.2 after 1 week of device use. No serious adverse events were reported; there was 1 instance of microscopic hematuria and 2 cases of pyuria, all of which recovered. Conclusions The investigated device demonstrated significant clinical effectiveness and safety for patients with stress urinary incontinence. It was easy to use, showing favorable patient compliance. We propose that these disposable intravaginal pessaries could potentially be an alternative treatment for patients with stress urinary incontinence who are seeking nonsurgical options or are unable to undergo surgery. Efficacy and Safety of Low-Dose Intravesical OnabotulinumtoxinA Injections in Female Patients With Detrusor Overactivity With Detrusor Underactivity
Purpose We assessed the effectiveness and safety of using intravesical onabotulinumtoxinA (onabotA; BOTOX) injection with a low dose (75 units) for treating urinary storage symptoms in patients with detrusor overactivity with detrusor underactivity (DODU) compared to using the standard 100 units of onabotA in patients with overactive bladder (OAB). Methods This ambidirectional study included 121 female patients who received intravesical onabotA injections at our hospitals. A total of 87 patients with OAB and 34 patients with DODU were reviewed using a 3-day voiding diary, uroflowmetry, and questionnaires including the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), Overactive Bladder Symptom Score, and Patient Perception of Bladder Condition. Patients were evaluated at baseline, within 2 weeks of treatment, and beyond 3 months after treatment. Results Questionnaire scores of the DODU group demonstrated significant improvement in the short term, with a subsequent decline, but an overall improvement compared to baseline in the long term. Notably, the DODU group exhibited enhanced IPSS voiding scores after the treatment. In the OAB group, most questionnaire scores, excluding the IPSS voiding score, showed significant posttreatment improvement, which was sustained to some extent in the long term. Voiding diary parameters related to storage symptoms were enhanced in both groups. The maximum and mean flow rates decreased in the OAB group but increased in the DODU group, particularly in the short term (P=0.000). The postvoid residual volume increased in both groups after posttreatment, with a mitigated change in the long term. Safety assessments revealed manageable adverse events in both groups with comparable frequencies. Conclusions Low-dose intravesical onabotA for DODU demonstrated a relatively shorter duration of efficacy than OAB. Nonetheless, the treatment improved both storage and voiding symptoms in patients with DODU without significant adverse effects

We propose a kinetic model to account for the nonuniform adsorption and desorption processes in fringe field switching (FFS) and in-plane-switching liquid crystal displays. An equation is proposed to describe the generation mechanism of residual DC voltage and good agreements with experiment are obtained. Based on this model, the mechanisms underlying the formation and relaxation processes of residual DC voltage as well as their dependences on offset DC voltage and temperature are investigated. Moreover, the residual DC voltages of FFS cells employing positive and negative dielectric anisotropy LCs are compared and the physics responsible for the observed difference is explained

cerebellar degeneration following ,B-fluoroethyl acetate intoxication. ,B-Fluoroethyl
acetate, an ethyl ester of fluoroacetate which is a metabolic inhibitor of Krebs cycle is
used as a rodenticide. Following initial stage of coma from intoxication, the patients
woke up to show selective cerebellar dysfunction, often so severe as not to be able to sit
or stand unsupported. They improved gradually over several months to years with variable
degrees of residual cerebellar dysfunction. Gait disturbance and dysarthria were
the most prominent and persistent factors of the cerebellar dysfunction, whereas mild
nystagmus was rarely seen. Cognitive function was not impaired. Cerebellar atrophy
became noticeable on CT and MRI 4 weeks after poisoning, and progressed over time
even with clinical improvement. Cerebellar degeneration contrasts with pallidal degeneration
following carbon monoxide poisoning. ,B-Fluoroethyl acetate may be

Original Article Morusin induces cell death through inactivating STAT3 signaling in prostate cancer cells
Abstract: STAT3 has been recognized as an efficacious drug target for prostate cancer because of its constitutive activation in this fatal disease. We recently identified the root bark of Morus alba Linn. as a potential STAT3 inhibitor among 33 phytomedicines traditionally used in Korea. Morusin, an active compound isolated from the root bark of Morus alba, has shown anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. In the present study, we examined whether morusin has a potential as an anti-cancer agent in prostate cancer. We found that morusin suppressed viability of prostate cancer cells, but little effect in normal human prostate epithelial cells. Morusin also reduced STAT3 activity by inhibiting its phosphorylation, nuclear accumulation, and DNA binding activity. In addition, morusin down-regulated expression of STAT3 target genes encoding Bcl-xL, Bcl-2, Survivin, c-Myc and Cyclin D1, which are involved in regulation of apoptosis and cell cycle. Furthermore, morusin induced apoptosis in human prostate cancer cells by reducing STAT3 activity. Taken together, these results suggest that morusin could be a potentially therapeutic agent for prostate cancer by reducing STAT3 activity and inducing apoptosis
Partial mesorectal excision can be a primary option for middle rectal cancer: a propensity scoreāmatched retrospective analysis
Purpose Although partial mesorectal excision (PME) and total mesorectal excision (TME) is primarily indicated for the upper and lower rectal cancer, respectively, few studies have evaluated whether PME or TME is more optimal for middle rectal cancer. Methods This study included 671 patients with middle and upper rectal cancer who underwent robot-assisted PME or TME. The 2 groups were optimized by propensity score matching of sex, age, clinical stage, tumor location, and neoadjuvant treatment. Results Complete mesorectal excision was achieved in 617 of 671 patients (92.0%), without showing a difference between the PME and TME groups. Local recurrence rate (5.3% vs. 4.3%, P>0.999) and systemic recurrence rate (8.5% vs. 16.0%, P=0.181) also did not differ between the 2 groups, in patients with middle and upper rectal cancer. The 5-year disease-free survival (81.4% vs. 74.0%, P=0.537) and overall survival (88.0% vs. 81.1%, P=0.847) also did not differ between the PME and TME groups, confined to middle rectal cancer. Moreover, 5-year recurrence and survival rates were not affected by distal resection margins of 2 cm (P=0.112) to 4 cm (P>0.999), regardless of pathological stages. Postoperative complication rate was higher in the TME than in the PME group (21.4% vs. 14.5%, P=0.027). Identification of PSEN1 and APP Gene Mutations in Korean Patients with Early-Onset Alzheimer's Disease
Although mutations in three genes, amyloid precursor protein (APP), presenilin 1 (PSEN1), and presenilin 2 (PSEN2), have been identified as genetic causes of early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD), there has been a single report on a PSEN1 mutation in Koreans. In the present study, we performed a genetic analysis of six Korean patients with EOAD. Direct sequencing analysis of the APP, PSEN1 and PSEN2 genes revealed two different mutations of the PSEN1 gene (G206S and M233T) and one mutation of the APP gene (V715M) in three patients with age-at-onset of 34, 35, and 42 yr, respectively. In addition, two patients with age-at-onset of 55 and 62 yr, respectively, were homozygous for APOE Īµ4 allele. One woman had no genetic alterations. These findings suggest that PSEN1 and APP gene mutations may not be uncommon in Korean patients with EOAD and that genetic analysis should be provided to EOAD patients not only for the identification of their genetic causes but also for the appropriate genetic counseling
Modulatory role of phospholipase D in the activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT)-3 by thyroid oncogenic kinase RET/PTC
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>RET/PTC (rearranged in transformation/papillary thyroid carcinomas) gene rearrangements are the most frequent genetic alterations identified in papillary thyroid carcinoma. Although it has been established that RET/PTC kinase plays a crucial role in intracellular signaling pathways that regulate cellular transformation, growth, and proliferation in thyroid epithelial cells, the upstream signaling that leads to the activation of RET/PTC is largely unknown. Based on the observation of high levels of PLD expression in human papillary thyroid cancer tissues, we investigated whether PLD plays a role in the regulating the RET/PTC-induced STAT3 activation.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Cancer tissue samples were obtained from papillary thyroid cancer patients (n = 6). The expression level of PLD was examined using immunohistochemistry and western blotting. Direct interaction between RET/PTC and PLD was analyzed by co-immunoprecipitation assay. PLD activity was assessed by measuring the formation of [<sup>3</sup>H]phosphatidylbutanol, the product of PLD-mediated transphosphatidylation, in the presence of <it>n</it>-butanol. The transcriptional activity of STAT3 was assessed by m67 luciferase reporter assay.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In human papillary thyroid cancer, the expression levels of PLD2 protein were higher than those in the corresponding paired normal tissues. PLD and RET/PTC could be co-immunoprecipitated from cells where each protein was over-expressed. In addition, the activation of PLD by pervanadate triggered phosphorylation of tyrosine 705 residue on STAT-3, and its phosphorylation was dramatically higher in TPC-1 cells (from papillary carcinoma) that have an endogenous RET/PTC1 than in ARO cells (from anaplastic carcinoma) without alteration of total STAT-3 expression. Moreover, the RET/PTC-mediated transcriptional activation of STAT-3 was synergistically increased by over-expression of PLD, whereas the PLD activity as a lipid hydrolyzing enzyme was not affected by RET/PTC.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These findings led us to suggest that the PLD synergistically functions to activate the STAT3 signaling by interacting directly with the thyroid oncogenic kinase RET/PTC.</p
