AIR: Adaptive Dynamic Precision Iterative Refinement

    Get PDF
In high performance computing, applications often require very accurate solutions while minimizing runtimes and power consumption. Improving the ratio of the number of logic gates implementing floating point arithmetic operations to the total number of logic gates enables greater efficiency, potentially with higher performance and lower power consumption. Software executing on the fixed hardware in Von-Neuman architectures faces limitations on improving this ratio, since processors require extensive supporting logic to fetch and decode instructions while employing arithmetic units with statically defined precision. This dissertation explores novel approaches to improve computing architectures for linear system applications not only by designing application-specific hardware but also by optimizing precision by applying adaptive dynamic precision iterative refinement (AIR). This dissertation shows that AIR is numerically stable and well behaved. Theoretically, AIR can produce up to 3 times speedup over mixed precision iterative refinement on FPGAs. Implementing an AIR prototype for the refinement procedure on a Xilinx XC6VSX475T FPGA results in an estimated around 0.5, 8, and 2 times improvement for the time-, clock-, and energy-based performance per iteration compared to mixed precision iterative refinement on the Nvidia Tesla C2075 GPU, when a user requires a prescribed accuracy between single and double precision. AIR using FPGAs can produce beyond double precision accuracy effectively, while CPUs or GPUs need software help causing substantial overhead

Progressive Processing of Continuous Range Queries in Hierarchical Wireless Sensor Networks

In this paper, we study the problem of processing continuous range queries in a hierarchical wireless sensor network. Contrasted with the traditional approach of building networks in a "flat" structure using sensor devices of the same capability, the hierarchical approach deploys devices of higher capability in a higher tier, i.e., a tier closer to the server. While query processing in flat sensor networks has been widely studied, the study on query processing in hierarchical sensor networks has been inadequate. In wireless sensor networks, the main costs that should be considered are the energy for sending data and the storage for storing queries. There is a trade-off between these two costs. Based on this, we first propose a progressive processing method that effectively processes a large number of continuous range queries in hierarchical sensor networks. The proposed method uses the query merging technique proposed by Xiang et al. as the basis and additionally considers the trade-off between the two costs. More specifically, it works toward reducing the storage cost at lower-tier nodes by merging more queries, and toward reducing the energy cost at higher-tier nodes by merging fewer queries (thereby reducing "false alarms"). We then present how to build a hierarchical sensor network that is optimal with respect to the weighted sum of the two costs. It allows for a cost-based systematic control of the trade-off based on the relative importance between the storage and energy in a given network environment and application. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves a near-optimal control between the storage and energy and reduces the cost by 0.989~84.995 times compared with the cost achieved using the flat (i.e., non-hierarchical) setup as in the work by Xiang et al.Comment: 41 pages, 20 figure

Purpose. We report the clinical outcomes of patients with spontaneous isolated dissection of the superior mesenteric artery (SIDSMA) who were treated conservatively. Materials and Methods. A retrospective review was performed in 14 patients from 2006 to 2016 with SIDSMA. Their clinical features and computed tomographic angiography (CTA) characteristics, treatment methods, and clinical outcomes were analyzed. The mean age was 53.6 (range, 41–73) years, and the mean follow-up duration was 20.6 (range, 1–54) months. Conservative management was the primary treatment if no bowel ischemia or arterial rupture was noted. Results. The mean initial abdominal visual analog pain score was 7 (range, 5–9) in seven patients. The mean total duration of abdominal pain was 10.2 days (range, 2–42 days) in 10 patients. The mean percentage stenosis of the dissected SMA at the initial presentation was 78.8% in 14 patients. Complete obstruction of the SMA at the initial presentation was evident in 4 of the 14 patients (28.6%). Conservative management was successful in all 14 patients. None of the 14 patients developed bowel ischemia or an infarction. Abdominal pain did not recur in any patient during follow-up (mean, 20.6 months; range, 1–54 months). Conclusion. Conservative management was successful for all SIDSMA patients, even those with severe compression of the true lumen or complete obstruction of the dissected SMA

Zero-frequency Bragg gap by spin-harnessed metamaterial

The Bragg gap that stops wave propagation may not be formed from zero or a very low frequency unless the periodicity of a periodic system is unrealistically large. Accordingly, the Bragg gap has been considered to be inappropriate for low frequency applications despite its broad bandwidth. Here, we report a new mechanism that allows formation of the Bragg gap starting from a nearly zero frequency. The mechanism is based on the finding that if additional spin motion is coupled with the longitudinal motion of a mass of a diatomic mechanical periodic system, the Bragg gap starting from a nearly zero frequency can be formed. The theoretical analysis shows that the effective mass and stiffness at the band gap frequencies are all positive, confirming that the formed stop band is a Bragg gap. The periodic system is realized by a spin-harnessed metamaterial which incorporates unique linkage mechanisms. The numerical and experimental validation confirmed the formation of the low-frequency Bragg gap. The zero-frequency Bragg gap is expected to open a new way to control hard-to-shield low-frequency vibration and noise

An Annular Array MPT for Enhanced Generation of Omnidirectional SH Waves in a Plate

If guided wave transducers are fabricated in an annular array type, the excitation and measurement of target guided wave modes could be considerably enhanced (see, e.g., [1]). Accordingly, various annular array transducers have been developed, including those generating omnidirectional Lamb waves in a plate. Here, we newly consider an annular array type MPT (magnetostrictive patch transducer) to generate enhanced SH (shear-horizontal) waves in a plate. This annular array MPT is based on our earlier development of an omnidirectional SH wave MPT [2]. For wave field analysis by the annular array SH wave MPT, the strain response in a plate due to wave excitation by the MPT is calculated by using the Green’s function approach [3]. Using the analysis, an optimal configuration of the annular array MPT which can maximize the transducer output at the given frequency is determined. For the validation of numerical predictions, a series of experiments with varying frequencies were carried out and the numerical results were found to be in good agreement with the experimental results

Solitary skull metastasis as initial manifestation of hepatocellular carcinoma

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: A solitary skull metastasis from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) prior to diagnosis of the primary tumor without liver dysfunction is a very rare event. CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old male, without known liver disease, presented to our institution with a palpable occipital scalp mass. On brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a highly enhanced and osteolytic skull tumor was observed. The histological diagnosis obtained from the percutaneous needle biopsy was a cranial metastasis from HCC. The metastatic tumor was removed via occipital craniectomy, and the two primary liver mass lesions were subsequently treated by transarterial chemoembolization. CONCLUSION: An isolated skull metastasis may be the sole initial presentation of HCC. Early diagnosis is essential in order to treat the primary disease. A skull metastasis from HCC should be considered in the differential diagnosis in patients with subcutaneous scalp mass and osteolytic defects on X-ray

A PMS (Power Management System) controls vessel's power systems to improve the system efficiency and to protect a blackout condition. The PMS should be developed with considering the type and the capacity of the vessel???s power system. It is necessary to test the PMS functions developed for vessel???s safe operations under various sailing situations. Therefore, the function tests in cooperation with practical power systems are required in the PMS development. In this paper, a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulator is developed for the purposes of the PMS function tests. The HIL simulator can be more cost-effective, more time-saved, easier to reproduce, and safer beyond the normal operating range than conventional off-line simulators, especially at early stages in development processes or during fault tests. Vessel's power system model is developed by using a MATLAB/SIMULINK software and by communicating between an OPAL-RT???s OP5600 simulator. The PMS uses a Modbus communication protocol implemented using LabVIEW software. Representative tests of the PMS functions are performed to verify the validity of the proposed HIL-based test platform

Optical repumping of triplet PP-states enhances magneto-optical trapping of ytterbium atoms

Radiative decay from the excited 1P1^1P_1 state to metastable 3P2^3P_2 and 3P0^3P_0 states is expected to limit attainable trapped atomic population in a magneto-optic trap of ytterbium (Yb) atoms. In experiments we have carried out with optical repumping of 3P0,2^3P_{0,2} states to 3P1^3P_1, we observe enhancement of trapped atoms yield in the excited 1P1^1P_1 state. The individual decay rate to each metastable state is measured and the results show an excellent agreement with the theoretical values.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
