    Neuroprotective Effects of Astaxanthin in Oxygen-Glucose Deprivation in SH-SY5Y Cells and Global Cerebral Ischemia in Rat

    Astaxanthin (ATX), a naturally occurring carotenoid pigment, is a powerful biological antioxidant. In the present study, we investigated whether ATX pharmacologically offers neuroprotection against oxidative stress by cerebral ischemia. We found that the neuroprotective efficacy of ATX at the dose of 30 mg/kg (n = 8) was 59.5% compared with the control group (n = 3). In order to make clear the mechanism of ATX neuroprotection, the up-regulation inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and heat shock proteins (HSPs) together with the oxygen glucose deprivation (OGD) in SH-SY5Y cells were also investigated. The induction of various factors involved in oxidative stress processes such as iNOS was suppressed by the treatment of ATX at 25 and 50 µM after OGD-induced oxidative stress. In addition, Western blots showed that ATX elevated of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1; Hsp32) and Hsp70 protein levels in in vitro. These results suggest that the neuroprotective effects of ATX were related to anti-oxidant activities in global ischemia

    Relocatable Service Composition based on Microservice Architecture for Cloud-Native IoT-Cloud Services

    With the development of the cloud, the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, the demand for services that utilize these infrastructure technologies is explosively increasing. In recent years, to develop and verify services quickly and efficiently, traditional monolithic service has evolved to a service composition that is based on a container-based microservice architecture (MSA). In particular, IoT-Cloud services that combine the internet of Things and the cloud are appropriate to make the functions based on cloud-native computing because it requires to connect with IoT, Cloud, and AI functions flexibly. In this paper, we design relocatable service composition to develop and compose intelligent IoT-Cloud service in the cloud-native computing environment based on IoT-Cloud pattern. In addition, to verify the feasibility of the proposed approach of service composition, we apply the specific IoT-Cloud service on multi-site playground to verify mobility and usefulness. We show the proposed approach can be proved that cloud-native based service is partially adaptable to the service environment and can be operated flexibly

    An Implementation of the IT Fundamentals Knowledge Area in an Introductory IT Course

    The recently promulgated IT model curriculum contains IT fundamentals (ITF) as one of its knowledge areas. It is intended to give students a broad understanding of (1) the IT profession and the skills that students must develop to become successful IT professionals and (2) the academic discipline of IT and its relationship to other disciplines. The model curriculum recommends 33 lecture hours to complete the IT fundamentals knowledge. The model curriculum also recommends that the material relevant to the IT fundamentals knowledge area be offered early in the curriculum, for example in an Introduction to IT course; however, many institutions will have to include additional material in an introductory IT course. For example, the Introduction to IT course at Georgia Southern University is used to introduce students to the available second disciplines (an important part of the Georgia Southern IT curriculum aimed at providing students with in-depth knowledge of an IT application domain), some productivity tools, and SQL in addition to an introduction to the discipline of IT. For many programs there may be too much material in an introductory IT course. This paper describes how Georgia Southern University resolved this problem by describing the structure of the introductory course at Georgia Southern, its assessment methods, and the relationship between the course and the ITF knowledge area and how those aspects of the ITF knowledge area that are not covered in the introductory course are covered elsewhere in the program

    Building Korean Sign Language Augmentation (KoSLA) Corpus with Data Augmentation Technique

    We present an efficient framework of corpus for sign language translation. Aided with a simple but dramatic data augmentation technique, our method converts text into annotated forms with minimum information loss. Sign languages are composed of manual signals, non-manual signals, and iconic features. According to professional sign language interpreters, non-manual signals such as facial expressions and gestures play an important role in conveying exact meaning. By considering the linguistic features of sign language, our proposed framework is a first and unique attempt to build a multimodal sign language augmentation corpus (hereinafter referred to as the KoSLA corpus) containing both manual and non-manual modalities. The corpus we built demonstrates confident results in the hospital context, showing improved performance with augmented datasets. To overcome data scarcity, we resorted to data augmentation techniques such as synonym replacement to boost the efficiency of our translation model and available data, while maintaining grammatical and semantic structures of sign language. For the experimental support, we verify the effectiveness of data augmentation technique and usefulness of our corpus by performing a translation task between normal sentences and sign language annotations on two tokenizers. The result was convincing, proving that the BLEU scores with the KoSLA corpus were significant

    Structural Optimization of a Knuckle with Consideration of Stiffness and Durability Requirements

    The automobile’s knuckle is connected to the parts of the steering system and the suspension system and it is used for adjusting the direction of a rotation through its attachment to the wheel. This study changes the existing material made of GCD45 to Al6082M and recommends the lightweight design of the knuckle as the optimal design technique to be installed in small cars. Six shape design variables were selected for the optimization of the knuckle and the criteria relevant to stiffness and durability were considered as the design requirements during the optimization process. The metamodel-based optimization method that uses the kriging interpolation method as the optimization technique was applied. The result shows that all constraints for stiffness and durability are satisfied using A16082M, while reducing the weight of the knuckle by 60% compared to that of the existing GCD450

    Conservative Management of Spontaneous Isolated Dissection of the Superior Mesenteric Artery

    Purpose. We report the clinical outcomes of patients with spontaneous isolated dissection of the superior mesenteric artery (SIDSMA) who were treated conservatively. Materials and Methods. A retrospective review was performed in 14 patients from 2006 to 2016 with SIDSMA. Their clinical features and computed tomographic angiography (CTA) characteristics, treatment methods, and clinical outcomes were analyzed. The mean age was 53.6 (range, 41–73) years, and the mean follow-up duration was 20.6 (range, 1–54) months. Conservative management was the primary treatment if no bowel ischemia or arterial rupture was noted. Results. The mean initial abdominal visual analog pain score was 7 (range, 5–9) in seven patients. The mean total duration of abdominal pain was 10.2 days (range, 2–42 days) in 10 patients. The mean percentage stenosis of the dissected SMA at the initial presentation was 78.8% in 14 patients. Complete obstruction of the SMA at the initial presentation was evident in 4 of the 14 patients (28.6%). Conservative management was successful in all 14 patients. None of the 14 patients developed bowel ischemia or an infarction. Abdominal pain did not recur in any patient during follow-up (mean, 20.6 months; range, 1–54 months). Conclusion. Conservative management was successful for all SIDSMA patients, even those with severe compression of the true lumen or complete obstruction of the dissected SMA
