    Spectroscopic Evidence for Anisotropic S-Wave Pairing Symmetry in MgB2

    Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of superconducting MgB2_2 (Tc=39T_c = 39 K) were studied on high-density pellets and c-axis oriented films. The sample surfaces were chemically etched to remove surface carbonates and hydroxides, and the data were compared with calculated spectra for all symmetry-allowed pairing channels. The pairing potential (Δk\Delta_k) is best described by an anisotropic s-wave pairing model, with Δk=Δxysin2θk+Δzcos2θk\Delta_k = \Delta_{xy} \sin ^2 \theta_k + \Delta_z \cos ^2 \theta_k, where θk\theta_k is the angle relative to the crystalline c-axis, Δz8.0\Delta_z \sim 8.0 meV, and Δxy5.0\Delta_{xy} \sim 5.0 meV.Comment: 4 pages and 3 figures.     Prevalence of voice handicap among nurses in intensive care units due to occupational noise during pandemic

    Background: Healthcare workers have been identified as being at risk of occupational voice disorders. Among them, nurses working in intensive care units (ICUs) are particularly vulnerable due to the risk factors that are associated with their exposure to high levels of noise. Thus, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of voice disorders among ICU nurses. Methods: A questionnaire was administered to 100 ICU nurses from four hospitals in China. The questionnaire assessed vocal-related symptoms, perceived voice handicap, frequently heard noise sources, and the quality of communications. Results: Results indicate that the most frequently reported voice symptoms were ‘voice tiredness’ and ‘voiceless’. Nurses working more than 50 h per week experienced voice symptoms more frequently than nurses working for 40–50 h per week. The median value of the perceived voice handicap score (VHI-30) was 23, indicating mild voice handicap, while 24% of the nurses reported severe voice handicap. Longer working hours and working at patient wards were significantly associated with higher VHI-30 scores. The nurses also reported that the quality of verbal communication with patients and colleagues and voice problems worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: More than 20% of nurses reported severe voice handicap, however, voice handicap among ICU nurses did not appear universally to all nurses. Further research is necessary to identify the risk factors associated with voice disorders and the mechanism behind such heterogeneity among ICU nurses

    Effect of sintering temperature under high pressure in the uperconductivity for MgB2

    We report the effect of the sintering temperature on the superconductivity of MgB2 pellets prepared under a high pressure of 3 GPa. The superconducting properties of the non-heated MgB2 in this high pressure were poor. However, as the sintering temperature increased, the superconducting properties were vastly enhanced, which was shown by the narrow transition width for the resistivity and the low-field magnetizations. This shows that heat treatment under high pressure is essential to improve superconducting properties. These changes were found to be closely related to changes in the surface morphology observed using scanning electron microscopy.Comment: 3 Pages including 3 figure

    Optical spectroscopic investigation on the coupling of electronic and magnetic structure in multiferroic hexagonal RMnO3 (R = Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho) thin films

    We investigated the effects of temperature and magnetic field on the electronic structure of hexagonal RMnO3 (R = Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho) thin films using optical spectroscopy. As the magnetic ordering of the system was disturbed, a systematic change in the electronic structure was commonly identified in this series. The optical absorption peak near 1.7 eV showed an unexpectedly large shift of more than 150 meV from 300 K to 15 K, accompanied by an anomaly of the shift at the Neel temperature. The magnetic field dependent measurement clearly revealed a sizable shift of the corresponding peak when a high magnetic field was applied. Our findings indicated strong coupling between the magnetic ordering and the electronic structure in the multiferroic hexagonal RMnO3 compounds.Comment: 16 pages including 4 figure
