    Though it is well known that the roots of any affine polynomial over a finite field can be computed by a system of linear equations by using a normal base of the field, such solving approach appears to be difficult to apply when the field is fairly large. Thus, it may be of great interest to find an explicit representation of the solutions independently of the field base. This was previously done only for quadratic equations over a binary finite field. This paper gives an explicit representation of solutions for a much wider class of affine polynomials over a binary prime field

    Surgical Findings to Differentiate Between Facial Nerve Schwannoma and Vestibular Schwannoma

    ObjectivesFacial nerve schwannomas may be misdiagnosed as vestibular schwannomas (VSs) if the tumor is confined to the internal auditory canal (IAC) without involvement the geniculated ganglion or labyrinthine segment of facial nerve. Because facial nerve schwannomas may be misdiagnosed as VSs, we investigated the differences between the two.MethodsThe study included 187 patients with a preoperative diagnosis of VS. Of these, six were diagnosed with facial nerve schwannomas during surgery. We reviewed the preoperative evaluations and surgical findings of facial nerve schwannomas mimicking VSs.ResultsNo useful preoperative predictors are available for facial nerve schwannomas mimicking VSs. Facial nerve schwannomas are usually confined to the IAC. After opening the dura of the IAC, a facial nerve schwannoma can be diagnosed after identifying a normal-appearing nerve located lateral to the tumor. When this was the case, we performed facial nerve preservation surgery or decompression.ConclusionFacial nerve schwannomas can be differentiated from VSs by identifying specific findings during surgery

    Effects of Alloying Elements on High-Temperature Oxidation and Sticking Occurring During Hot Rolling of Modified Ferritic STS430J1L Stainless Steels

    In the present study, mechanisms of sticking that occurs during hot rolling of modified STS430J1L ferritic stainless steels were investigated by using a pilot-plant-scale rolling machine, and the effects of alloying elements on sticking were analyzed by the high-temperature oxidation behavior. The hot-rolling test results indicated that the Cr oxide layer formed in a heating furnace was broken off and infiltrated the steel, thereby forming Cr oxides on the rolled steel surface. Because the surface region without oxides underwent a reduction in hardness rather than the surface region with oxides, the thickness of the surface oxide layer favorably affected the resistance to sticking. The addition of Zr, Cu, and Ni to the ferritic stainless steels worked in favor of the decreased sticking, but the Si addition negatively affected the resistance to sticking. In the Si-rich steel, Si oxides were continuously formed along the interfacial area between the Cr oxide layer and the base steel, and interrupted the formation and growth of the Cr oxide layer.     Relation Between Severity of Magnesium Deficiency and Frequency of Anginal Attacks in Men With Variant Angina

    AbstractObjectives. We evaluated whether the severity of magnesium deficiency was correlated with the frequency of attacks of variant angina.Background. Magnesium deficiency may be associated with the development of variant angina. However, the relation between the activity of variant angina and magnesium deficiency remains to be elucidated.Methods. We assessed the body magnesium status of 18 men with variant angina: Group 1 (≥4 attacks/week, n = 7) and Group 2 (<4 attacks/week, n = 11). Concentrations of magnesium were determined in serum, urine, mononuclear cells and erythrocytes, and the 24-h magnesium retention rate was determined.Results. Group 1 showed a higher 24-h magnesium retention rate (mean ± SEM 63.5 ± 7.6% vs. 24.9 ± 2.7%, p < 0.01) and a lower intracellular concentration of magnesium in mononuclear cells and erythrocytes than did Group 2 (respectively, 156.3 ± 13.5 vs. 212.1 ± 6.9 fg/cell, p < 0.01; and 3.5 ± 0.5 vs. 5.2 ± 0.4 fg/cell, p < 0.05), demonstrating the presence of magnesium deficiency in Group 1. The 24-h magnesium retention rate and intracellular concentrations of magnesium in mononuclear cells and erythrocytes correlated well with the frequency of anginal attacks (r = 0.78, p < 0.01; r = −0.78, p < 0.01; r = −0.62, p < 0.01, respectively) for all patients.Conclusions. Data suggest that the magnesium status of men with variant angina is closely related to disease activity

    The title compound, [1-(CH3)3NCH2-1,2-C2B10H11]+·I− or C6H22B10N+·I−, was obtained by the reaction of (1,2-dicarba-closo-dodeca­boran­yl)dimethyl­methanamine with methyl iodide. The asymmetric unit contains two iodide anions and two (o-carboran­yl)tetra­methyl­ammonium cations. The bond lengths and angles in the carborane cage are within normal ranges, but the N—Cmethyl­ene—Ccage angle is very large [120.2 (2)°] because of repulsion between the carborane and tetra­methyl­ammonium units.     In Vitro Chemosensitivity Using the Histoculture Drug Response Assay in Human Epithelial Ovarian Cancer

    The choice of chemotherapeutic drugs to treat patients with epithelial ovarian cancer has not depended on individual patient characteristics. We have investigated the correlation between in vitro chemosensitivity, as determined by the histoculture drug response assay (HDRA), and clinical responses in epithelial ovarian cancer. Fresh tissue samples were obtained from 79 patients with epithelial ovarian cancer. The sensitivity of these samples to 11 chemotherapeutic agents was tested using the HDRA method according to established methods, and we analyzed the results retrospectively. HDRA showed that they were more chemosensitive to carboplatin, topotecan and belotecan, with inhibition rates of 49.2%, 44.7%, and 39.7%, respectively, than to cisplatin, the traditional drug of choice in epithelial ovarian cancer. Among the 37 patients with FIGO stage Ⅲ/Ⅳ serous adenocarcinoma who were receiving carboplatin combined with paclitaxel, those with carboplatin-sensitive samples on HDRA had a significantly longer median disease-free interval than patients with carboplatin- resistant samples (23.2 vs. 13.8 months, p<0.05), but median overall survival did not differ significantly (60.4 vs. 37.3 months, p=0.621). In conclusion, this study indicates that HDRA could provide useful information for designing individual treatment strategies in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer
