    The role of symmetry on interface states in magnetic tunnel junctions

    When an electron tunnels from a metal into the barrier in a magnetic tunnel junction it has to cross the interface. Deep in the metal the eigenstates for the electron can be labelled by the point symmetry group of the bulk but around the interface this symmetry is reduced and one has to use linear combinations of the bulk states to form the eigenstates labelled by the irreducible representations of the point symmetry group of the interface. In this way there can be states localized at the interface which control tunneling.     Structural characterization of water-soluble atmospheric organic matter by ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry

    Isolated water-soluble analytes extracted from fog water collected during a radiation fog event near Fresno, CA were analyzed using collision induced dissociation and ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry. Tandem mass analysis was performed on scan ranges between 100-400 u to characterize the structures of nitrogen and/or sulfur containing species. CHNO, CHOS, and CHNOS compounds were targeted specifically because of the high number of oxygen atoms contained in their molecular formulas. The presence of 22 neutral losses corresponding to fragment ions was evaluated for each of the 1308 precursors. Priority neutral losses represent specific polar functional groups (H2O, CO2, CH3OH, HNO3, SO3, etc., and several combinations of these). Additional neutral losses represent non-specific functional groups (CO, CH2O, C3H8, etc.) Five distinct monoterpene derived organonitrates, organosulfates, and nitroxy-organosulfates were observed in this study, including C10H16O7S, C10H17NO7S, C10H17 NO8S, C10H17NO9S, and C10H17NO10S. Nitrophenols and linear alkyl benzene sulfonates were present in high abundance.     The Scattering Theory of Oscillator Defects in an Optical Fiber

    We examine harmonic oscillator defects coupled to a photon field in the environs of an optical fiber. Using techniques borrowed or extended from the theory of two dimensional quantum fields with boundaries and defects, we are able to compute exactly a number of interesting quantities. We calculate the scattering S-matrices (i.e. the reflection and transmission amplitudes) of the photons off a single defect. We determine using techniques derived from thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) the thermodynamic potentials of the interacting photon-defect system. And we compute several correlators of physical interest. We find the photon occupancy at finite temperature, the spontaneous emission spectrum from the decay of an excited state, and the correlation functions of the defect degrees of freedom. In an extension of the single defect theory, we find the photonic band structure that arises from a periodic array of harmonic oscillators. In another extension, we examine a continuous array of defects and exactly derive its dispersion relation. With some differences, the spectrum is similar to that found for EM wave propagation in covalent crystals. We then add to this continuum theory isolated defects, so as to obtain a more realistic model of defects embedded in a frequency dependent dielectric medium. We do this both with a single isolated defect and with an array of isolated defects, and so compute how the S-matrices and the band structure change in a dynamic medium.Comment: 32 pages, TeX with harvmac macros, three postscript figure

    The Effects of Workplace Union on the Gender Wage Gap

    The Roudy Law in 1983 tried to promote wage equality between men and women by reinforcing union power in this field. A reexamination of CMOSS data from 1992 allows measuring what was its impact after nearly ten years of implementation. The methodology consists in computing how the presence of union representatives at the workplace affects wage gaps between men and women of similar characteristics. Taking into account selection bias and unobserved individual and establishment heterogeneity, our results show a positive impact of unions on wages for both men and women working full time in the industrial sector. This union premium is all the more important as the worker earns a low wage. Nevertheless, we find no significant impact of unions on the unexplained gender wage gap: unions tend to increase both mens and womens wages in similar proportions.trade union, gender wage gap, gender discrimination, linked employer-employee French data

    Competitiveness in the Quarterly Business Survey in Goods-Producing Industries

    This working paper aims at assessing the quality and relevance of firms statements about their own « competitiveness » within the French Quarterly Business Survey in goods-producing industries. A higher competitiveness at the individual level is significantly correlated with higher sales, higher production, lower costs of materials and lower labour costs. However this correlation concerns raw values, not values relative to other firms in the sector. This result should warn us against what firms truly mean while stating the way their competitiveness evolves: they might indicate variations of the economic situation or business conditions, rather than a true evolution of their market situation relative to competitors. We sum up firm-level statements about competitiveness into an aggregate competitiveness index. This index seems fairly well correlated with other common « competitiveness » indices, such as aggregate labour productivity, exchange rates or aggregate costs relative to foreign competitors.competitiveness, Business Survey

    We prove versions of super spin-charge separation for all three of the symmetry groups SU(N), Sp(2N), and SO(N) of disordered Dirac fermions in 2+1 dimensions, which involve the supercurrent-algebras gl (1|1)_{N}, osp(2|2)_{-2N}, and osp(2|2)_N respectively. For certain restricted classes of disordered potentials, the latter supercurrent algebra based conformal field theories can arise as non-trivial low energy fixed points.     Observation of band structure and density of states effects in Co-based magnetic tunnel junctions

    Utilizing Co/Al2_2O3_3/Co magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with Co electrodes of different crystalline phases, a clear relationship between electrode structure and junction transport properties is presented. For junctions with one fcc(111) textured and one polycrystalline (poly-phase and poly-directional) Co electrode, a strong asymmetry is observed in the magnetotransport properties, while when both electrodes are polycrystalline the magnetotransport is essentially symmetric. These observations are successfully explained within a model based on ballistic tunneling between the calculated band structures (DOS) of fcc-Co and hcp-Co.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys.     Ransomware against Police: Diagnosis of Risk Factors via Application of Cyber-Routine Activities Theory

    Technologically advanced hackers are able to commit a crime and leave undiscovered by the authorities. Recent increases in cyber-attacks utilizing technology known as ransomware are leaving police departments and other institutions in the serious situation of having to pay ransom to cybercriminals. The present study employs a Cyber-Routine Theoretical approach in explaining why ransomware victimization has become a viral phenomenon. Data were derived from the recent reported cases of ransomware attacks towards police departments in the U.S. and analyzed in order to build a victim profile. This study shows that online lifestyle and cybersecurity are the salient factors that contribute to the ransomware victimization. Future potential preventive measures and policies will be discussed
