Waveguide coupling in the few-cycle regime
We consider the coupling of two optical waveguides in the few-cycle regime. The analysis is performed in the frame of a generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili model. A set of two coupled modified Korteweg–de Vries equations is derived, and it is shown that three types of coupling can occur, involving the linear index, the dispersion, or the nonlinearity. The linear nondispersive coupling is investigated numerically, showing the formation of vector solitons. Separate pulses may be trapped together if they have not initially the same location, size, or phase, and even if their initial frequencies differ
(In)finite extensions of algebras from their Inonu-Wigner contractions
The way to obtain massive non-relativistic states from the Poincare algebra
is twofold. First, following Inonu and Wigner the Poincare algebra has to be
contracted to the Galilean one. Second, the Galilean algebra is to be extended
to include the central mass operator. We show that the central extension might
be properly encoded in the non-relativistic contraction. In fact, any
Inonu-Wigner contraction of one algebra to another, corresponds to an infinite
tower of abelian extensions of the latter. The proposed method is
straightforward and holds for both central and non-central extensions. Apart
from the Bargmann (non-zero mass) extension of the Galilean algebra, our list
of examples includes the Weyl algebra obtained from an extension of the
contracted SO(3) algebra, the Carrollian (ultra-relativistic) contraction of
the Poincare algebra, the exotic Newton-Hooke algebra and some others. The
paper is dedicated to the memory of Laurent Houart (1967-2011).Comment: 7 pages, revtex style; v2: Minor corrections, references added; v3:

Spontaneous formation of optically induced surface relief gratings
A model based on Fick's law of diffusion as a phenomenological description of
the molecular motion, and on the coupled mode theory, is developped to describe
single-beam surface relief grating formation in azopolymers thin films. It
allows to explain the mechanism of spontaneous patterning, and
self-organization. It allows also to compute the surface relief profile and its
evolution in time with good agreement with experiments
Few-cycle optical solitons in linearly coupled waveguides
We consider soliton propagation in two parallel optical waveguides, in the presence of a linear nondispersive coupling and in the few-cycle regime. The numerical analysis is based on a set of two coupled modified Korteweg–de Vries equations. The evidenced few-cycle vector solitons are optical breathers. In addition to the usual breathing due to carrier-envelope velocity mismatch, we observe, and describe in detail, spatial oscillations of soliton’s amplitude and energy
Anyon wave equations and the noncommutative plane
The ``Jackiw-Nair'' non-relativistic limit of the relativistic anyon
equations provides us with infinite-component wave equations of the
Dirac-Majorana-Levy-Leblond type for the ``exotic'' particle, associated with
the two-fold central extension of the planar Galilei group. An infinite
dimensional representation of the Galilei group is found. The velocity operator
is studied, and the observable coordinates describing a noncommutative plane
are identified.Comment: 11 pages, typos correcte
Comments on Supergravity Description of S-branes
This is a note on the coupled supergravity-tachyon matter system, which has
been earlier proposed as a candidate for the effective space-time description
of S-branes. In particular, we study an ansatz with the maximal
ISO(p+1)xSO(8-p,1) symmetry, for general brane dimensionality p and homogeneous
brane distribution in transverse space \rho_\perp. A simple application of
singularity theorems shows that (for p \le 7) the most general solution with
these symmetries is always singular. (This invalidates a recent claim in the
literature.) We include a few general comments about the possibility of
describing the decay of unstable D-branes in purely gravitational terms.Comment: 19 pages, refs adde
The (p,q) String Tension in a Warped Deformed Conifold
We find the tension spectrum of the bound states of p fundamental strings and
q D-strings at the bottom of a warped deformed conifold. We show that it can be
obtained from a D3-brane wrapping a 2-cycle that is stabilized by both electric
and magnetic fluxes. Because the F-strings are Z_M-charged with non-zero
binding energy, binding can take place even if (p,q) are not coprime.
Implications for cosmic strings are briefly discussed.Comment: 17 pages, 1 figur
Cosmology of the Tachyon in Brane Inflation
In certain implementations of the brane inflationary paradigm, the exit from
inflation occurs when the branes annihilate through tachyon condensation. We
investigate various cosmological effects produced by this tachyonic era. We
find that only a very small region of the parameter space (corresponding to
slow-roll with tiny inflaton mass) allows for the tachyon to contribute some
e-folds to inflation. In addition, non-adiabatic density perturbations are
generated at the end of inflation. When the brane is moving relativistically
this contribution can be of the same order as fluctuations produced 55 e-folds
before the end of inflation. The additional contribution is very nearly
scale-invariant and enhances the tensor/scalar ratio. Additional
non-gaussianities will also be generated, sharpening current constraints on
DBI-type models which already predict a significantly non-gaussian signal.Comment: 30 pages, 2 figures; v3, minor revision, JCAP versio
More on Tachyon Cosmology in De Sitter Gravity
We aim to study rolling tachyon cosmological solutions in de Sitter gravity.
The solutions are taken to be flat FRW type and these are not time-reversal
symmetric. We find that cosmological constant of our universe has to be
fine-tuned at the level of the action itself, as in KKLT string
compactification. The rolling tachyon can give rise to required inflation with
suitable choice of the initial conditions which include nonvanishing Hubble
constant. We also determine an upper bound on the volume of the
compactification manifold.Comment: 15pp, 3 figures; references adde
Scalar Kaluza-Klein modes in a multiply warped braneworld
The Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of a massive scalar field on a 3-brane embedded
in six dimensional multiply warped spacetime are determined. Due to the
presence of warping along both the extra dimensions the KK mass spectrum splits
into two closely spaced branches which is a distinct feature of this model
compared to the five dimensional Randall-Sundrum model. This new cluster of the
KK mode spectrum is expected to have interesting phenomenological implications
for the upcoming collider experiments. Such a scenario may also be extended for
even larger number of orbifolded extra dimensions.Comment: 10 pages, Revte
