Consommation de psychotropes et délinquance : de bons prédicteurs de l’abandon scolaire ?
Although empirical links between deviant behavior and school dropout have been extensively demonstrated, the specific influence of drug use and delinquency on school dropout is still not clear and varies across studies. One reason for this lack of consistency may rests upon the way samples of dropouts have been analysed. Recently, Janosz, Le Blanc, Boulerice and Tremblay (1996) constructed and validated a typology of school dropout highlithing the social and psychological diversity of this population. Using a longitudinal sample of adolescents (N=791), we analyzed the predictive relationships of family rebelliousness, drug use and delinquency on school dropout. The results showed an important variability in the predictive relationships according to the type of dropouts. The necessity of considering the psychosocial heterogeneity of dropouts when conducting such studies is discussed

Coupled structural and magnetic properties of ferric fluoride nanostructures: part II, a Monte-Carlo Heisenberg study
We present a numerical study of the magnetic structure of nanostructured iron
fluoride, using the Monte-Carlo-Metropolis simulated annealing technique and a
classical Heisenberg Hamiltonian with a superexchange angle dependence. The
parameters are adjusted on experimental results, and the atomic structure and
topology taken from a previous atomistic model of grain boundaries in the same
system. We find perfect antiferromagnetic crystalline grains and a disordered
magnetic configuration (speromagnetic like) at the grain boundary, in agreement
with experimental findings. Both the lowest magnetic energy and the rate of
magnetic frustration are found to be dependent on the relative disorientation
of crystalline grains, i.e. on the cationic topology. By simulating hysteresis
loops, we find that the magnetization rotation is not spatially uniform. We
conclude on possible extensions of the model.Comment: submitted to JMM
Black Thyroid Associated with Thyroid Carcinoma
Objective. Black thyroid is a rare pigmented change seen almost exclusively in patients upon minocycline ingestion, and the process has previously been thought to be generally benign. There have been 61 reported cases of black thyroid. We are aware of 13 cases previously reported in association with thyroid carcinoma. This paper reports six patients with black thyroid pigmentation in association with thyroid carcinoma. Design. The medical records of six patients who were diagnosed with black thyroid syndrome, all of whom underwent thyroid surgery, were reviewed. Data on age, gender, race, preoperative fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNA), thyroid function levels, and pathology reports were collected. Main Outcome. The mean age was 60 years. There were 5 females, 4 of whom were African American. All patients were clinically and biochemically euthyroid. Black pigmentation was not diagnosed in preoperative FNA, and only one patient had a preoperative diagnosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma. The other patients underwent surgery and were found to have black pigmentation of the thyroid associated with carcinoma. Conclusions. FNA does not diagnose black thyroid, which is associated with thyroid carcinoma. Thyroid glands with black pigmentation deserve thorough pathologic examination, including several sections of each specimen
Chemometric perspectives on plankton community responses to natural iron fertilisation over and downstream of the Kerguelen Plateau in the Southern Ocean
International audienceWe examined phytoplankton community responses to natural iron fertilisation at 32 sites over and downstream from the Kerguelen Plateau in the Southern Ocean during the austral spring bloom in October–November 2011. The community structure was estimated from chemical and isotopic measurements (particulate organic carbon – POC; 13C-POC; particulate nitrogen – PN; 15N-PN; and biogenic silica – BSi) on size-fractionated samples from surface waters (300, 210, 50, 20, 5, and 1 μm fractions). Higher values of 13C-POC (vs. co-located 13C values for dissolved inorganic carbon – DIC) were taken as indicative of faster growth rates and higher values of 15N-PN (vs. co-located 15N-NO3 source values) as indicative of greater nitrate use (rather than ammonium use, i.e. higher f ratios).Community responses varied in relation to both regional circulation and the advance of the bloom. Iron-fertilised waters over the plateau developed dominance by very large diatoms (50–210 μm) with high BSi / POC ratios, high growth rates, and significant ammonium recycling (lower f ratios) as biomass built up. In contrast, downstream polar frontal waters with a similar or higher iron supply were dominated by smaller diatoms (20–50 μm) and exhibited greater ammonium recycling. Stations in a deep-water bathymetrically trapped recirculation south of the polar front with lower iron levels showed the large-cell dominance observed on the plateau but much less biomass. Comparison of these communities to surface water nitrate (and silicate) depletions as a proxy for export shows that the low-biomass recirculation feature had exported similar amounts of nitrogen to the high-biomass blooms over the plateau and north of the polar front. This suggests that early spring trophodynamic and export responses differed between regions with persistent low levels vs. intermittent high levels of iron fertilisation
Calibration and First light of the Diabolo photometer at the Millimetre and Infrared Testa Grigia Observatory
We have designed and built a large-throughput dual channel photometer,
Diabolo. This photometer is dedicated to the observation of millimetre
continuum diffuse sources, and in particular, of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect
and of anisotropies of the 3K background. We describe the optical layout and
filtering system of the instrument, which uses two bolometric detectors for
simultaneous observations in two frequency channels at 1.2 and 2.1 mm. The
bolometers are cooled to a working temperature of 0.1 K provided by a compact
dilution cryostat. The photometric and angular responses of the instrument are
measured in the laboratory. First astronomical light was detected in March 1995
at the focus of the new Millimetre and Infrared Testa Grigia Observatory (MITO)
Telescope. The established sensitivity of the system is of 7 mK_RJ s^1/2$. For
a typical map of at least 10 beams, with one hour of integration per beam, one
can achieve the rms values of y_SZ ~ 7 10^-5 and the 3K background anisotropy
Delta T/T ~ 7 10^-5, in winter conditions. We also report on a novel bolometer
AC readout circuit which allows for the first time total power measurements on
the sky. This technique alleviates (but does not forbid) the use of chopping
with a secondary mirror. This technique and the dilution fridge concept will be
used in future scan--modulated space instrument like the ESA Planck mission

A highly prevalent filamentous algal endophyte in natural populations of the sugar kelp Saccharina latissima is not detected during cultivation in Northern Brittany
The sugar kelp Saccharina latissima is cultivated in Europe for food, feed and ultimately the production of chemical commodities and bioenergy. Being cultivated in the open sea, S. latissima is exposed to potentially harmful organisms, such as Laminarionema elsbetiae, a filamentous brown algal endophyte with a very high prevalence in wild populations of European S. latissima. As it was shown previously that S. latissima sporophytes get infected by L. elsbetiae very early in their life, seeding the spores on collectors and keeping them under controlled conditions during the critical time of a possible infection with filamentous endophytes could be advantageous over direct seeding techniques, where the ropes are deployed within days after seeding. We used a qPCR-assay to assess the prevalence of the endophyte L. elsbetiae in S. latissima cultivated during winter in Northern Brittany, comparing individuals from direct-seeded ropes and collector-seeded lines that were kept in laboratory conditions for different time spans. No DNA of the endophyte was detected in the samples, suggesting that either the kelps were not infected or the amount of endophytic filaments were below the detection rate of the qPCR assay. Furthermore, L. elsbetiae could not be detected in the seawater surrounding the kelp farm, indicating that L. elsbetiae is not fertile or disperses at a very small scale in Northern Brittany during the deployment time of young kelps. Our results suggest that infections of cultivated S. latissima with the endophyte L. elsbetiae might be a minor problem in kelp farms in Northern Brittany if the seeding production is kept under controlled conditions without external contamination
