Evidence to inform an integrated social and behavior change strategy in the Sahel
Breakthrough RESEARCH completed this literature review, which summarized the evidence, or lack thereof, in the Sahel, to establish a rationale for the planned RISE II SBC evaluation as described in the study protocol. The literature review provides an overview of the health and development challenges in the region, along with priority health behaviors and their determinants followed by a description of SBC programmatic approaches that have addressed behavioral determinants and health outcomes in the region
Monitoring the quality branding campaign \u3ci\u3eConfiance Totale\u3c/i\u3e in Côte d’Ivoire
Breakthrough RESEARCH has conducted a study to monitor the family planning (FP) quality assurance branding campaign in Côte d’Ivoire called Confiance Totale. Implemented by Breakthrough ACTION, Confiance Totale (French for Complete Trust) aims to increase demand for and use of quality FP services in Francophone West Africa. The promotional campaign, developed in early 2020, theorizes that promotion of safe and effective FP within a supportive social context will lead to an increase in demand for FP services, following the theory that mass media influence not only individual FP skills and knowledge but also environmental supports, constraints, and ideational factors in the cognitive, social, and emotional domains. Confiance Totale addressed these determinants by providing guidance to couples to increase communication about FP and by addressing key concerns, encouraging audiences to have confidence in the safety and effectiveness of FP methods and the need for FP services to offer welcoming, competent providers. The monitoring study, conducted by Breakthrough RESEARCH, sought to determine (1) the level of unprompted recall of the Confiance Totale campaign among target beneficiaries and (2) if recall of the campaign was associated with higher levels of perceptions of FP safety, FP-related social norms, self-efficacy, spousal communication about FP, intention to talk to a partner about FP, intention to seek FP information at a health facility, intention to use FP, and current use of FP methods
Renforcement du suivi et de l\u27evaluation des changements sociaux et comportementaux pour le planning familial en Afrique de l\u27Ouest francophone
Francophone West Africa has the highest fertility rates in the world and low contraceptive prevalence. In reponse, the Ouagadougou Partnership was established to encourage family planning (FP), but efforts have focused on service delivery and commodity procurement with fewer investments in demand creation through social and behavior change (SBC) approaches. A recent study found that in countries with a high desired ideal number of children, FP progress is limited without investing in efforts to increase demand. There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that SBC can directly increase contraceptive use by addressing intermediate outcomes such as attitudes, social norms, self-efficacy, and partner communication that influence contraceptive use

Provider behavior change approaches to improve family planning services in the Ouagadougou partnership countries: A landscaping review
This landscaping review summarizes available evidence (as of 2020) on the effectiveness of provider behavior change interventions for improving family planning services in Ouagadougou Partnership countries and presents current or recent provider behavior change interventions not formally evaluated. The findings are summarized along with reflections about possible research and programming investments to address challenges and opportunities
Evaluation of RISE II integrated social and behavior change activities in Niger: Baseline report
Breakthrough RESEARCH is conducting a mixed-methods study that includes quantitative methods to assess differential changes over time in key health outcomes associated with Resilience in the Sahel Enhanced (RISE) II\u27s integrated social and behavioral change (SBC) strategy and qualitative methods to explain how and why gender-related changes occurred or were associated with these changes. This technical report presents descriptive baseline findings for the quantitative portion of the evaluation. This information will support RISE II\u27s Resilience Food Security Activity partners to understand how to tailor planned SBC approaches to address barriers to adopting targeted health behaviors
