Extended sources in the XMM-Newton slew survey
The low background, good spatial resolution and great sensitivity of the
EPIC-pn camera on XMM-Newton give useful limits for the detection of extended
sources even during the short exposures made during slewing maneouvers. In this
paper we attempt to illustrate the potential of the XMM-Newton slew survey as a
tool for analysing flux-limited samples of clusters of galaxies and other

The XMM-Newton Slew Survey: towards the XMMSL1 catalogue
The XMM-Newton satellite is the most sensitive X-ray observatory flown to
date due to the great collecting area of its mirrors coupled with the high
quantum efficiency of the EPIC detectors. It performs slewing manoeuvers
between observation targets tracking almost circular orbits through the
ecliptic poles due to the Sun constraint. Slews are made with the EPIC cameras
open and the other instruments closed, operating with the observing mode set to
the one of the previous pointed observation and the medium filter in place.
Slew observations from the EPIC-pn camera in FF, eFF and LW modes provide
data, resulting in a maximum of 15 seconds of on-source time. These data can be
used to give a uniform survey of the X-ray sky, at great sensitivity in the

Gene deficiency in activating FcÎł receptors influences the macrophage phenotypic balance and reduces atherosclerosis in mice
Immunity contributes to arterial inflammation during atherosclerosis. Oxidized low-density lipoproteins induce an autoimmune response characterized by specific antibodies and immune complexes in atherosclerotic patients. We hypothesize that specific FcÎł receptors for IgG constant region participate in atherogenesis by regulating the inflammatory state of lesional macrophages. In vivo we examined the role of activating FcÎł receptors in atherosclerosis progression using bone marrow transplantation from mice deficient in Îł-chain (the common signaling subunit of activating FcÎł receptors) to hyperlipidemic mice. Hematopoietic deficiency of FcÎł receptors significantly reduced atherosclerotic lesion size, which was associated with decreased number of macrophages and T lymphocytes, and increased T regulatory cell function. Lesions of FcÎł receptor deficient mice exhibited increased plaque stability, as evidenced by higher collagen and smooth muscle cell content and decreased apoptosis. These effects were independent of changes in serum lipids and antibody response to oxidized low-density lipoproteins. Activating FcÎł receptor deficiency reduced pro-inflammatory gene expression, nuclear factor-ÎşB activity, and M1 macrophages at the lesion site, while increasing anti-inflammatory genes and M2 macrophages. The decreased inflammation in the lesions was mirrored by a reduced number of classical inflammatory monocytes in blood. In vitro, lack of activating FcÎł receptors attenuated foam cell formation, oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory gene expression, and increased M2-associated genes in murine macrophages. Our study demonstrates that activating FcÎł receptors influence the macrophage phenotypic balance in the artery wall of atherosclerotic mice and suggests that modulation of FcÎł receptor-mediated inflammatory responses could effectively suppress atherosclerosis
Multi-operability and dynamic bandwidth allocation in PONs with electrically reconfigurable SOA/REAM-based ONUs
An approach to integrate dynamic bandwidth allocation and multi-operability for WDM-PONs is demonstrated with a symmetrical SOA/REAM-based ONU design and C/L waveband 10Gb/s burst-mode operation, allowing electrical reconfigurability of the ONU's detection and remodulation branch
Multinet : enabler for next generation enterprise wireless services
Wireless communications are currently experiencing a fast migration toward the beyond third-generation (B3G)/fourth generation (4G) era. This represents a generational change in wireless systems: new capabilities related to mobility and new services support is required and new concepts as individual-centric, user-centric or ambient-aware communications are included. One of the main restrictions associated to wireless technology is mobility management, this feature was not considered in the design phase; for this reason, a complete solution is not already found, although different solutions are proposed and are being proposed. In MULTINET project, features as mobility and multihoming are applied to wireless network to provide the necessary network and application functionality enhancements for seamless data communication mobility considering end-user scenario and preferences. The aim of this paper is to show the benefits of these functionalities from the Service Providers and final User point of view
Using the stated preference method for the calculation of social discount rate
The aim of this paper is to build the stated preference method into the social discount rate methodology. The first part of the paper presents the results of a survey about stated time preferences through pair-choice decision situations for various topics and time horizons. It is assumed that stated time preferences differ from calculated time preferences and that the extent of stated rates depends on the time period, and on how much respondents are financially and emotionally involved in the transactions. A significant question remains: how can the gap between the calculation and the results of surveys be resolved, and how can the real time preferences of individuals be interpreted using a social time preference rate. The second part of the paper estimates the social time preference rate for Hungary using the results of the survey, while paying special attention to the pure time preference component. The results suggest that the current method of calculation of the pure time preference rate does not reflect the real attitudes of individuals towards future generations
Genetic diversity and population structure of Angiostrongylus vasorum parasites within and between local urban foxes (Vulpes Vulpes)
Angiostrongylus vasorum is a nematode parasite of the pulmonary arteries and heart that infects domestic and wild canids. Dogs (Canis familiaris) and red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) are the most commonly affected definitive hosts. Recent studies suggest that angiostrongylosis is an emerging disease, and that red foxes may play an important role in the epidemiology of the parasite. Genetic analyses of parasites collected from dogs and foxes throughout Europe have shown that the same parasite haplotypes are commonly shared between different host species. However, the extent of genetic diversity within local A. vasorum populations and individual hosts is unknown. The objective of the present study was to assess the occurrence of genetic diversity among A. vasorum (a) recovered from different foxes within the Greater London area (a localised population, single worm per fox dataset); and (b) hosted within single foxes (multiple worms per fox dataset). During 2016, A. vasorum worms were collected from foxes culled for other purposes in London. DNA was extracted from each parasite and a partial fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (mtCOI) gene was amplified and sequenced. Sequences from the single worm dataset were compared with those published elsewhere. Combined, 19 haplotypes were described of which 15 were identified from foxes found in London, indicating that considerable genetic diversity can be detected within a local geographic area. Analysis of the multiple worm dataset identified 22 haplotypes defining worms recovered from just six foxes, emphasising the relevance of wild canines as reservoirs of genetic diversity. This is the first study to explore the genetic complexity of individual fox-hosted A. vasorum population
The XMM-Newton Slew Survey: a wide-angle survey in the 0.2 - 12 keV band
The scientific data collected during slews of the XMM-Newton satellite are
used to construct a slew survey catalogue. This comprises of the order of 4000
sources detected in the EPIC-pn 0.2-12 keV band with exposures of less than 15s
and a sky coverage of about 6300 square degrees (source density ~0.65 per
square degree). Below 2 keV the sensitivity limit is comparable to the ROSAT
PSPC All-Sky Survey and the XMM-Newton slew survey offers long-term variablity
studies. Above 2 keV the survey will be a factor of 10 more sensitive than all
previous all-sky X-ray surveys. The slew survey is almost complementary to the
serendipitous survey compiled from pointed XMM-Newton observations. It is aimed
to release the first source catalogue by the end of 2005. Later slew
observations and detections will continuously be added. This paper discusses

WDM-ring PON by means of hybrid Raman/EDFA amplification. The system under analysis is composed by a bidirectional pump at 1480 nm and 16 channels (8 C band + 8 L band). The simulation describes an 80 km
WDM ring with 8 nodes in which 2 channels are added/dropped. The results demonstrate gain equalization with a ripple of 2.54 dB over a bandwidth of 50 nm by using a 1480 nm bidirectional pump with 1 W and spans of EDF with a total length of 22 m
Ultrasensitive UV-tunable grating in all-solid photonic bandgap fibers
We study the shift of a long period grating's resonance wavelength with UV induced refractive index changes in an all-solid photonic bandgap fiber. A long period grating is mechanically imprinted in an all-solid photonic bandgap fiber with Germanium doped silica high-index rods in a lower-index silica background. The index of the high-index rods is modified through UV exposure, and we observe that the long period grating's resonance shifts with the bandgaps.
