    Variation with the cultivar on the processing of apples as clear juice

    The researches done at UASVM Cluj-Napoca in the frame of Horticultural product technology Department between 2014-2015 years followed the behavior of five apple cultivars at processing as clear juice. The apple juice characteristics (soluble solids content, organic acids content and clarification grade) were analyzed at processing of apples as clear juice and three months later, in order to determine how the initial characteristics of raw material were found again in the finished product. In order to provide the microbiological stability of juice, preservation was done with two chemical methods (sulfur dioxide - SO2 and sodium benzoate) and one physical method (pasteurization). The obtained results revealed ‘Florina’ cultivar, which had a processing efficiency as juice about 60%, high soluble solids content, 1% acidity, good clarification grade of juice, and pasteurization as microbiological stabilization method

    STUDIES REGARDING THE BEHAVIOR OF SOME POTATO VARIETIES PROCESSING BY DEHYDRATION

    The nutritional value of vegetables is given by the high content of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins, etc., with curative and medicinal properties (biopharmaceuticals). The potato, being rightly considered the "second bread of mankind" is used in large-scale processing with a growing trend of global growth, being an attribute of modern civilization. Potato tubers should retain their light flavor, firm texture and should break easily. At present, dehydration of cut potatoes is the main processing method. To be dehydrated potatoes can be sliced in different ways into rounds, prism cubes of different sizes. Another process is to obtain flakes (intended for the rapid preparation of puree). The vast majority of dehydrated potato production is destined for the bakery industry. Based on the laboratory analyzes and the results obtained in the case of the four potato varieties, the destination of the finished product will be taken into account when choosing the varieties for dehydration, and in case the aim is not to obtain a rehydration capacity, yielding varieties increased processing

    Metals Toxic Effects in Aquatic Ecosystems: Modulators of Water Quality

    The topic of this work was based on the assessment of aquatic systems quality related to the persistent metal pollution. The use of aquatic organisms as bioindicators of metal pollution allowed the obtaining of valuable information about the acute and chronic toxicity on common Romanian aquatic species and the estimation of the environment quality. Laboratory toxicity results showed that Cd, As, Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, Zr, and Ti have toxic to very toxic effects on Cyprinus carpio, and this observation could raise concerns because of its importance as a fishery resource. The benthic invertebrates’ analysis showed that bioaccumulation level depends on species, type of metals, and sampling sites. The metal analysis from the shells of three mollusk species showed that the metals involved in the metabolic processes (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, and Mg) were more accumulated than the toxic ones (Pb, Cd). The bioaccumulation factors of metals in benthic invertebrates were subunitary, which indicated a slow bioaccumulation process in the studied aquatic ecosystems. The preliminary aquatic risk assessment of Ni, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, As, and Zn on C. carpio revealed insignificant to moderate risk considering the measured environmental concentrations, acute and long-term effects and environmental compartment

    Carbamazepine-induced DRESS syndrome: a case report

    Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome is a potentially life-threatening, idiosyncratic, acute adverse drug reaction. Fever, morbilliform cutaneous eruption, and eosinophilia are essential features for the diagnosis of this syndrome, along with significant multisystem involvement, hepatitis being the most common, followed by nephritis. The pathogenesis of DRESS syndrome is not yet fully understood. Several hypotheses have been proposed which support the involvement of an intricate interplay of multiple factors. We report a clinical case of DRESS syndrome with renal injury, induced by carbamazepine, in a patient with alcohol abstinence syndrome. In order to define the case, the RegiSCAR score and the Japanese Group score, used in the diagnosis of drug-induced hypersensitivity, were applied. DRESS syndrome is a potentially fatal disease, with a mortality that can reach up to 40% of cases. This condition endangers the patient\u27s life by affecting the internal organs, mainly the liver, kidneys, heart, and lungs. Our case attempts to increase awareness among physicians about this serious disease and the importance of early diagnosis, especially since carbamazepine is a commonly used anticonvulsant drug

    The molecular mechanisms linking metabolic syndrome to endometrial and breast cancers

    The metabolic syndrome represents a plethora of cardio-metabolic risk factors including obesity, arterial hypertension, atherogenic dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, accompanied by pro-inflammatory and pro-thrombotic state. The metabolic syndrome is one of the key risk factors for certain types of cancer. Among these malignancies, breast cancer and endometrial neoplasms require special attention. Incriminated major causes for the development of breast and endometrial cancer in metabolic syndrome patients are: the pro-inflammatory status and related cytokines, adipokine imbalances, hyperestrogenism, growth factors, disturbances in cancer microenvironment, insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia. The metabolic syndrome consists of molecular dysregulations that create a pro-oncogenic status. Our review aims at providing a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying the link between the metabolic syndrome and endometrial and breast cancer
