Pupils need to be actively engaged in the learning experiences, which is evidenced by the amount of time they are deemed to be “on-task”. In a PE context this is reflected by the amount of time they are involved in motor and other activities related to the subject matter in such a way as to produce a high degree of success, with intended learning outcomes (ILOs) of the lesson more likely to be met. Thus the organisation and management of pupils during a lesson is a key factor in ensuring that effective learning takes place

Negotiating change: The impact of school transfer on attainment, self-esteem, self-motivation and attitudes in physical education

This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.The purpose of this study was to identify any changes in attainment, self-esteem, self-motivation and attitudes to physical education between the end of year 6 and the beginning of year 8 (during the transfer from primary to secondary school), and to establish the extent of any differences between gender, age of transfer and school attended. Consideration was also given to the ways in which continuity and promotion was promoted between schools involved in the study. Data was collected on four occasions over a 20-month period. Data pertaining to attainment was collected using observation techniques and teacher assessment, whilst self-esteem and self-motivation was collected using questionnaires. Attitudinal data, information relating to physical education, and continuity and progression data were collected using questionnaires and interviews. Results showed significant increases in attainment, self-esteem and self-motivation between the end of year 6 and the beginning of year 8. Significant differences were evident in relation to gender, age of transfer and secondary school attended. Significant positive relationships were found between attainment and self-esteem, attainment and self-motivation, and self-esteem and self-motivation, allowing a tentative relationship model to be proposed. Changes in attitudes towards physical education were also found. Whilst teachers acknowledged the importance of continuity and progression, links between schools focused on social / pastoral rather than curricular issues. Time, staffing issues and finance were identified as the main constraints to the establishment of links. What emerges is a complicated picture of inter-related factors, with no universal solution. Each teacher must consider this broad range of factors within the context they teach. In order to do this there is perhaps a need to raise awareness amongst teachers of the impact of the transfer between primary and secondary phases of education on pupils across curriculum subjects, and that this should be explicitly considered and planned for

Gender differences in coping strategies of undergraduate students and their impact on self-esteem and attainment

This study sought to investigate differences in the coping strategies adopted by male and female first year students in a higher education environment and the extent to which such strategies had an impact on self-esteem and attainment. Results revealed significant differences between males and females in terms of engagement in coping strategies and academic attainment. Specifically, males exhibited greater ability to detach themselves from the emotions of a situation, were more inclined to demonstrate emotional inhibition or ‘bottling up’ of emotions and reported higher self-esteem. In addition, it was observed that females attained at a significantly higher level than males. Practical implications and recommendations for future research are identified

A survey of burn professionals regarding the mental health services available to burn survivors in the United States and United Kingdom

This investigation surveyed burn health professionals in the UK and US to investigate the psychosocial issues facing burn survivors and the psychological services available to them through their burns service. Methods One hundred and sixty six burn care professionals (132 from the United States and 34 from the United Kingdom) from 76 different hospitals (60 in the US and 16 in the UK) completed an online survey. Mental health practitioners (MHPs) answered questions regarding their psychotherapy practice with burn survivors. Results Respondents reported that psychosocial issues are common among burn survivors. Burn teams in the UK were more likely than those in the US to include psychologists, but social workers were more common in the US. Participants reported that routine screening for psychosocial issues was more common in the UK than the US, and indicated it was easier for burn survivors to access mental health care after discharge in the UK. Burn services in both countries routinely referred burn survivors to support organizations such as the Phoenix Society or Changing Faces. The preferred mental health treatment modality in the UK was psychotherapy without medications. Reported psychotropic medications use was more common in the US. MHPs had two primary orientations - eclectic and cognitive behavioral therapy. Among MHPs there was a modest tendency to favor evidence-based interventions. Discussion The provision of mental health services varies between these two countries. Creating international standards for assessing and treating psychosocial complications of burns could facilitate the improvement of burn mental health services

A significant portion of state economies in New England, especially in Massachusetts, relies heavily on the employment of the foreign-born. As the native workforce ages and population growth declines, businesses are becoming increasingly dependent upon the availability of the foreign-born. This development has facilitated an increasingly significant presence and role of immigrant entrepreneurs in Leisure and Hospitality businesses that is documented for the first time in this report

Behavioral discrimination between monogyne and polygyne red fire ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in their native range

Nestmate recognition among social insects is presumed to restrict non-nestmates from exploiting nest resources. Here, we developed aggression bioassays to assess the discrimination behaviors of both polygynous and monogynous forms of the red fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, during symmetrical interactions in neutral arenas. Workers from polygyne colonies exhibited risk avoidance behaviors; that is, defensive postures or the avoidance of direct contact during interactions. Workers from monogyne colonies always exhibited aggressive behaviors in the form of physical or chemical attacks. In interactions between both, monogyne workers usually started the aggression by surrounding and biting the polygyne ants. Polygyne S. invicta workers also distinguished nestmates from foreigners, but their response was not as aggressive as that of monogynes. The proposed ethogram that we constructed identified monogyne and polygyne forms of S. invicta colonies in concordance with current measures, including number of queens, and expression of the Gp-9 gene.Fil: Chirino, Monica Gabriela.
