Search for Oscillation of the Electron-Capture Decay Probability of Pm
We have searched for time modulation of the electron capture decay
probability of Pm in an attempt to confirm a recent claim from a group
at the Gesellschaft f\"{u}r Schwerionenforschung (GSI). We produced Pm
via the Sn(Na, 5n)Pm reaction at the Berkeley 88-Inch
Cyclotron with a bombardment time short compared to the reported modulation
period. Isotope selection by the Berkeley Gas-filled Separator is followed by
implantation and a long period of monitoring the Nd K x-rays
from the daughter. The decay time spectrum of the x-rays is well-described by a
simple exponential and the measured half-life of 40.68(53) seconds is
consistent with the accepted value. We observed no oscillatory modulation at
the proposed frequency at a level 31 times smaller than that reported by
Litvinov {\it et al.} (Phys. Lett. B 664 (2008) 162; arXiv:0801.2079
[nucl-ex]). A literature search for previous experiments that might have been
sensitive to the reported modulation uncovered another example in Eu
electron-capture decay. A reanalysis of the published data shows no oscillatory

Experimental Proposal for Achieving Superadditive Communication Capacities with a Binary Quantum Alphabet
We demonstrate superadditivity in the communication capacity of a binary
alphabet consisting of two nonorthogonal quantum states. For this scheme,
collective decoding is performed two transmissions at a time. This improves
upon the previous schemes of Sasaki et al. [Phys. Rev. A 58, 146 (1998)] where
superadditivity was not achieved until a decoding of three or more
transmissions at a time. This places superadditivity within the regime of a
near-term laboratory demonstration. We propose an experimental test based upon
an alphabet of low photon-number coherent states where the signal decoding is
done with atomic state measurements on a single atom in a high-finesse optical

Morphology, activity area, and movement patterns of the frugivorous monitor lizard Varanus Bitatawa
The newly described Varanus bitatawa is a large, frugivorous, monitor lizard endemic to the northern Sierra Madre mountain range in Luzon, Philippines. This study presents the first description of its ecology from tracking and camera trapping. We captured five adult lizards weighing 1.0-5.1 kg with snout-vent lengths (SVL) from 40-66 cm and total lengths from 100-164 cm. Activity areas were non-overlapping with a mean of 12,400 m(2); males (23,300 m(2)) had larger activity areas than females (5,200 m(2)). Capture and camera trap records indicate that lizards move most frequently between 1000 and 1500. Movements were characterized by straight line distances between trees with a mean distance travelled between trees of 79 m. Mean daily distance covered was 176 m with larger distances covered by males (228 m vs 142 m for females).Environmental BiologyConservation Biolog
Cavity QED and quantum information processing with "hot" trapped atoms
We propose a method to implement cavity QED and quantum information
processing in high-Q cavities with a single trapped but non-localized atom. The
system is beyond the Lamb-Dick limit due to the atomic thermal motion. Our
method is based on adiabatic passages, which make the relevant dynamics
insensitive to the randomness of the atom position with an appropriate
interaction configuration. The validity of this method is demonstrated from
both approximate analytical calculations and exact numerical simulations. We
also discuss various applications of this method based on the current

Tests of CPT Invariance at Neutrino Factories
We investigate possible tests of CPT invariance on the level of event rates
at neutrino factories. We do not assume any specific model but phenomenological
differences in the neutrino-antineutrino masses and mixing angles in a Lorentz
invariance preserving context, such as it could be induced by physics beyond
the Standard Model. We especially focus on the muon neutrino and antineutrino
disappearance channels in order to obtain constraints on the
neutrino-antineutrino mass and mixing angle differences; we found, for example,
that the sensitivity

Pseudo-hyperkahler Geometry and Generalized Kahler Geometry
We discuss the conditions for additional supersymmetry and twisted
supersymmetry in N = (2, 2) supersymmetric non-linear sigma models described by
one left and one right semi-chiral superfield and carrying a pair of
non-commuting complex structures. Focus is on linear non-manifest
transformations of these fields that have an algebra that closes off-shell. We
find that additional linear supersymmetry has no interesting solution, whereas
additional linear twisted supersymmetry has solutions with interesting
geometrical properties. We solve the conditions for invariance of the action
and show that these solutions correspond to a bi-hermitian metric of signature
(2, 2) and a pseudo-hyperkaehler geometry of the target space.Comment: Letters in Mathematical Physics : electronically published versio
